City in Ruins-a Story
« on: March 04, 2010, 07:07:10 pm »
A squad of Photos walkers thudded along a canyon towards a pillar of smoke about a mile ahead.
"Ok," Said the leader over the intercom, "Neeth squad, check in. Neeth one here."
"Neeth 2, reporting in." Said the fellow in the Titan next to him.
"Neeth 3, reportin'." Said the long-range specialist in the Gargont.
"Neeth 4, checking in." Said one of the two scouts in the Nuras.
"Neeth 5, bringin' up the rear!" Said the other scout.
"Ok, we're approaching the city." Said the leader. The squad stopped trudging at the base of the road leading in.
"Ok, Neeth 3, up on that outcrop, that should prove a good sniping spot, as the buildings relatively small here." He said, torso twisting towards a natural ramp up towards a ledge extending from the basin wall.
"Roger that." Neeth 3 said, walking onto the hill.
"Neeth 4, launch a sensor drone over the city." The commander ordered. Neeth 4 obliged, and a missile went streaking over the city, splitting apart to reveal a small round drone. It scanned for hostile walkers.
"Neeth 4 and 5, recon and harass. You know the drill." He said. They went on ahead.
"Neeth 2, buddy boy, let's go crack some skulls." He grinned.
"Weapons systems online, Combat Stabilizers online, Passive Sensor suite online, Tactical Feed online. All systems functional." The commander updated. Neeth 2 did the same. They moved forward into the city.
"Commander, we count 24 enemy walkers in the city." Neeth 5 told him.
"This is gonna be funny." He cackled. They moved out into a city square, where there were two enemy walkers. The commander got a lock with his missiles.
"Eat this," He said, launching a hailstorm of explosives at the assailants. They detonated against the enemy. The other walker turned and opened fire. His mech reeled from the multiple impacts. He launched his Lance array. They hit on the hull. He walked behind a building, obliging the multiple missile launch warining on his HUD. They hit the building, the side collapsing in a blast. He stepped out, but was beat to the punch when two Railgun beams streaked through the assailant, the mech falling over and detonating.
"Nice shot, Neeth 2!" The commander chuckled
"Can we drop the formalities, Or'naj?" Neeth 2 asked.
"Fine, Hy'nae." He obliged Neeth 2, Hy'nae.

The two scout mechs were speeding along a wide street when a warning went off:
NEW TARGET DETECTED;DESIGNATION ORYE-A, MOBILIZE.
An enemy mech fired it's jump jets, landing on top of one of the buildings. It opened fire with two energy weapons, but they missed, and Neeth 4 fired off his missiles at the building, bringing it down from underneath the enemy. He walked forward a little, when another warning went off
NEW TARGET DETECTED;DESIGNATION QUARRY-B, MOBLIZE.
"Kyhira!" Neeth 5 screamed at sight of the towering quadruped assault mech in front of them.
"Or'naj, we have a Quarry, B-Spec! Repeat, we have a Quarry,B-Spec!" Neeth 4 said into the intercom, unleashing all his weapons at the assault walker, along with Neeth 5. The barrage hardly left a mark in the armour.
"Break off, Neeth 4 & 5, there's no way you can handle a B-Spec Quarry with your payloads!" Came the commander over the intercom.
"Commander, we might be able to take it out by maneuvoring behind it. It's armour is weak at it's rear torso section!" Neeth 4 said.
"Alright, but for the love of the creator, be careful!" Came the response. The pair fired their jump jets, flying over the mech, landing behind it. They spun around and unleased on the torso before the lumbering beast of a machine could turn around. The machine's torso split, revealing a blast of increasingly bright light. Neeth 4 fired his jump jets, flying backward, with Neeth 5 trailing him. A few seconds later, the wreck exploded in a massive fireball. They moved on.
Back with the two leaders, they were firing maelstorms of fire at massive numbers of enemy walkers. Within a few minutes, there were but 2 enemy walkers left on sensors.
"2 REMAINING TARGETS: QUARRY-D;ORGAR-A, MOBILIZE." Came the computer voice, acknowledging the Commander's scan request.
"Ok, Neeth 4 and 5, keep tabs and harassment on that Orgar, Neeth 2, go after that Quarry." He ordered, taking lead after Neeth 2. They easily overcame to the Quarry. It torso twisted to face them, unleashing a hailstorm of stolen SEACESSV cannon blasts. Neeth 2 got up close, firing full blast. It went critical, and though the commander was able to get away fast enough, the Titan was too slow.
"Kyhira...EJECTING!" He yelled, pulling the ejector, getting clear just moments before the massive explosion comsumed both mechs, and damaged the commanders. He made off towards the Orgar, and was just a block away when his left actuator locked.
"Damnit! Neeth 4 and 5, slow him down so I can get in position!" He ordered.
"Roger, Neeth 4 and 5, intercepting!" Neeth 4 said, the pair jump jetting off their vantage point on top of a tall building. They fired their Light Plasma Lances as they flew over the top of the mech. The enemy reeled from the impact, but was ready and blew Neeth 5's legs off with a high energy weapon. It went critical, a gargling:
"ARGHHHHHhhhhhhh!" On the communications line as Neeth 5's pilot died.
"You little son of a-" Neeth 4 swore, opening fire full power on the enemy. Neeth 1 got in place just in time. A red triangle bounced across the screen, attempting for a lock. It finally got one, and he opened fire on the already damaged mech. It fell over, but luckily for Neeth 4, didn't go critical.
"Phew, commander, it's just us now."

This somehow reminds me of the American-Mexican War.

Great work. Hope to see some more urban combat action. :)

A sensor readout pinged on Neeth 4's sensor screen.
"Commander, we have a friendly on route....appears to be a Hothgar transport."
"Ah, they're here to get us." The commander grinned. A new opening appeared in his channel.
"Before you ask, we already picked up Neeth 2. He's fine, beside having a damaged pride. But he's about to loose his mind about watching his Titan explode." The pilot said, the last portion with an equal grin.
"I take it we're going back to base?" The commander asked.
"Yes. And you have a surprise waiting for you." The pilot of the Hothgar said.
((I'll post more after I make the update in the Photos thread with his "surprise".))

((By the way, here are the two notorious enemy walkers encountered so far:
Orgar

Class: Assault
Armament: 1 Plasma Accelerator, 1 Dual Heavy Plasma Lance, 1 Missile Pod
Bio: A rebel walker, the Orgar is feared for it's Plasma Accelerator, which is able to do massive amounts of heat and kinetic damage. It's other weapons give it a well-rounded combat ability, while still keeping it one of the fastest Assault walkers in existance.

The Quarry
Weight: 145 Tons

Armament: 8 Heavy Plasma Lances, 2 Railguns, 1 SEACESSV Cannon, 1 Dual Light Plasma Lance Turret, 1 Dual Plasma Mortar Cannon
Bio: A true terror, the Quarry quadrupedal walker is the most heavily armed walker encountered of the Rebel's. However, it is lacking in the armour department, to keep it mobile, something that plagues it. Though there are rumors of a prototype Quarry II with enhanced armour, and *erp*....jump jets....

The two remaining mechs boarded onto the Hothgar. Already on board was Neeth 3, who had actually been useless inside the city. They transport shot off. The three were brought back to the field base at the city center, where shuttles were being loaded with civilains who survived the seperatist onslaught. The pilots were escorted from the hangar, and taken to rooms to rest. Or'naj, Neeth 1, sat down at the desk. He was a young person himself, a mere 30. He still lead one of the most promenent squads in his battalion. He stopped and remembered the last news bit he had seen before his deployment....
"In massive devastation, the city of Vy'nera has been desecrated by Garan Seperatist forces..." Said the reporter, switching to a video clip of a scout walker being ripped apart by autocannon fire.
"...Reports from survivors claim that Xylanis Waratica forces, a Battalion in fact, have been dispatched to safeguard the planet." She said. She switched to another news clip.
"I don't understand it. Those walkers are titanic. I don't understand how they can be so fragile." Said a person.
Or'naj came back to the now. He chuckeld at that last part. Typical. People thing that just because the war machines are big, they can't be destroyed. How wrong they are.
"I see you lost someone today." Said a voice behind him. He turned on the swivel chair. It was Commander Var'soon, his commanding officer.
"Yeah, Neeth 5. Went critical before he had a chance to eject." Or'naj said, noticing that the commander had read the incident report sitting in front of him.
"Well, I have a surprise for you. You've been premoted. You now have a Warren mech, better than that old hunk of junk you pilot now." Var'soon said. "You look worried." He added.
"These Seperatists are getting better and better technology. I'm getting worried. They are even getting Orealyanis weaponry. And I want to know who from." He admitted. He opened his mouth, and was about to say something, when an alarm went off.
"All commanders to control room. Repeat, all commanders to control room." Came over the intercom. The two went to the control room, where they all huddled around a large, round sensor display. There were about three dozen large blips, with countless smaller ones.
"What are we looking at?" Or'naj asked. He looked at the commander, who's face was stricken with horror.
"Or'naj," He said with greif. "We're looking at the main Garan strike force. They're on their way here to destroy us all."

The whole of remaining Neeth squad was riding up elevators to their titanic walkers. There were cranes and various other devices loading missiles and autocannon ammunition. The cockpits were open on all the mechs, and they got in once the elevators stopped moving. Or'naj hit a key, and the cockpit pneumatically closed. He began the power up sequence, flicking all sorts of switches, and hitting all sorts of buttons.
"Reactor on-line. Weapons systems on-line. Sensors on-line. All functioning systems, nominal." Said the computer in the Warren.
"So, commander, who's going after us today?" Neeth 2 asked.
"It appears to be the remnants of who we fought further out, the 3rd Hakonis Spearheads. They have sent all remaining walkers in the field directly at us. Expect mostly assault mechs out there, it's gonna be one hot drop-'n'-spank-em. Alright, Neeth squad, pull it out and form up on me!" He said, pushing the throttle open gently. The mech walked forward toward the exit of the hangar. Neeth 2 pulled up next to him once they were clear. A few missiles streaked by Neeth 1, hitting Neeth 3 on the way out.
"Damage report, three!" Or'naj ordered.
"I'm OK, sir, the armor took it with out a problem. Looks like they have vehicles launching them, though." He said.
"Get track of those damn launchers!" Or'naj said, looking for a lock. When he got one, he fired off his missile pod.He finished off the last one with a shot from his Heavy Railgun. An enemy walker, feeling lucky, charged towards the Warren. The commander took aim and laughed, firing his autocannon. He blew both arms and legs off the mech. He launched a sensor drone, and when it scanned, he noticed a sniper up on the building nearby. He aimed and fired his autocannon. He blew off one of it's legs, and it fell off the building. It exploded when it hit the ground, so the fall inherently punctured the reactor. He looked back just in time to see a hailstorm of missiles heading for his position. He got behind some debris, but Neeth 2, with his clunky Titan, wasn't so luck. His mech was ripped apart, and a missile penetrated the cockpit, killing him instantly.
"Neeth 2! Respond!" The commander shouted into his intercom. Nothing but static. He torso twisted left, and saw Neeth 3 advancing. He looked right to see another hailstorm  of missiles heading down the road.
"Neeth 3! GET CLEAR!" He screamed into the intercom, but to no avail. The missiles blew his mech to pieces, and the reactor went critical just as he ejected, and he was caught in the blast.
"Damnit!" Neeth 1 shouted, slamming a clenched fist on the control panel of his Warren. He checked his sensor readout. Neeth 4 was down as well, but there was a positive on the eject. He let out a sigh of relief. Still, he was the only remaining mech in the area. He checked his sensors again. The enemy force was proceeding down the road.
"Attention all surviving units, and command. I have contact with main attack force. All other mechs in area are down. Get the civilians on those shuttles, I will stall them here, buying you guys as much time as I can. Or'naj, out." He said with a sigh. He torso twisted right, and stepped out from the debris protecting him, firing full blast as soon as the first enemy was in his crosshairs. He dealt good damage, as he was not expected. He destroyed two mechs and crippled a third. But the rest already had his number. He kept moving, firing full with all weapons. He took down countless enemies. Then, one got a bead on him with a railgun. It fired three times. He got an alert on his HUD.
CORE BREACH! EJECT!
He pulled the lever, and went shooting away from his Warren. Almost a hundred feet in the air, he looked down. He saw the Warren go critical, taking out several assault mechs. He looked up at the deployed parachute. He closed his eyes and relaxed.
"Choke on that, you bastards." He said. He saw the last shuttle lift off towards orbit.
NOTE FROM AUTHOR: I know there is somewhat extreme cussing towards the end. But mind you, he just saw two of his squad mates get killed before his very eyes. It'd only be real. And realism is what I'm going for here. If the mods find it TOO excessive, I will change it.

Don't worry about it much, as long as censored words.

We have a story arc in the "The New Superpower RP Part III" where a character horrendously desecrates and mutilates an entire family, all in intricate detail.

Though, yeah, I understand that that section is leaning towards a more teen audience than this one. Still, my point still stands that harsh dialogue, in proper moderation, isn't that bad as it adds realism.

As for the story itself, dang, I can't wait for the next part! ;D That last scene just totally reminds me of this unit's self destruct mode, which is awesome! 8)

The shuttle pulled up to his location and hovered. It slowly reversed thrust until Or'naj was inside the ship. He disconnected his parachute, and it fell away from the craft. The shuttle door closed.
"Or'naj, I still can't figure out if you're brave or insane!" Said the commander, walking over to him quickly. He gave Or'naj a pat on the back.
"If it's the last thing I do, I'll see to it you get a medal for this!" He added. He lead Or'naj over to the row of seats on the side of the wall. He sat him down.
"Are you OK?" He asked.
"Yeah...yeah, I'm alright, but I lost three of my best people today, commander. I want revenge." he said.
"Oh, trust me, buddy, you'll get it soon enough. We're gonna meet up with the rest of the regiment in orbit, get you and Four in new mechs, get you some new squadmates, and sent out again to bloody some noses!" The commander said.
"Great to hear!" Or'naj exclaimed.
"Some more good news; Neeth 4 was promoted due to the gravity of the situation. He now has dibs on a Lancet medium mech." The commander said. The two of them grinned at each other. That would mean trouble for the rebels.

Uraa City; 6:00 PM; 10,000 feet
"Alright, Or'naj, get in."
Or'naj obliged the commander, standing next to him. However, they were both insignificant in comparison with the titanic Colossus that was to be his ride on this mission. They were at the top, having rode the lift all the way up the massive machine. He stepped into the cockpit, which had pneumatically opened. He hit the SEAL button on the panel. The cockpit slid down, locking with a pneumatic hiss. He powered up the colossal war machine.
"OK, move into the Hothgar to be transported onto the ground." The commander said, his voice coming in slightly static-laced through the helmet receiver. He reached up, annoyed, and smacked the side of his head, and in turn, the helmet.
"Say again?" He asked.
"Move into the Hothgar!" The commander yelled, coming in deafeningly loud.
"Crystal..." Or'naj winced, in ear pain. He pushed the throttle 1/4 of the way open. He walked the machine onto the open dropship. The door shut, and the dropship was released. It flew down the surface, and he was released into the destroyed metropolis. He opened the throttle all the way. The dropship lifted off.
"Or'naj, your Colossus has an Advanced Communications Interceptor. It'll cut into nearby enemy channels and allow you to listen in. Should be good for getting the scoop on any nosy little SOB's who feel quirky."
"Roger that, commander." Or'naj said. He was walking along when he heard what sounded like, for all purpose, pthank, pthank, pthank. He scanned his mech, and found some idiot was shooting him with a Plasma Carbine. He aimed and fired a round from his Plasma Strike Cannons. The plasma blasts enveloped the single infantryman. There was a warning display on his hud about a missile incoming. He aimed and followed as aforementioned with the Strke Cannons. He searched nearby enemy channels.
".....so we know they just dropped something big down here, let's find it. Erar 2, sensor sweep, now!" Said someone unknown, most likely the leader of an enemy walker squad.
"So.....uh-oh. They set down a Colossus, sir. Sensors say it's A-Spec, so expect a lot of Autocannons. I'd suggest that me and 3 sneak up on him." Said the Photos presumed to be Erar 2.
"Right, both of you, you and your Oryes jump on the buildings beside him. When I give the signal, ambush him." Erar 1 said. Or'naj grinned. Time to smash some pesky little gnats. He heard the two of them land, and he walked for a short distance, to let them get comfortable. He whirled on them.
"OH ****! COMMANDER, HE MADE US!" He heard one of the two scouts say. He unleashed a hailstorm of fire at them. He destroyed one of them, and the other one turned to jump away. He got a lock. When it jumped, he fired his shoulder missiles. They streaked past the building. Heard several explosions. Then, the building collapsed from a critical reactor. Or'naj laughed. Too easy. He turned and kept advancing. He heard two more jump jets. This time, though, they landed in the street, blocking his path.
NEW TARGETS DETECTED; DESIGNATIONS BARBON-A; MOBILIZE
Or'naj grinned and opened fire with his autocannons. The first Heavy Autocannon he let off punctured the cockpit of the left one, and it fell over, the balance system completely ruined. He pummeled the other one with his Light Autocannons. He heard over the channel;
"Damn, sir! Ejecting!" The target said, seeing the cockpit shoot away from the mech.
"I don't know who you are, fool, but you shall not take one more step, for you are fighting Kor'nase Hy'nera!" Said the last enemy over the channel.
"Announcing yourself to your foe? A little corny, don't you think?" Or'naj mocked.
"Ha! You won't survive long enough to pass another insult from your lips!"

The enemy mech in front of him almost met his Colossus in height. Two broken beams of energy shot from barrels on the torso of the mech, and they punched decent holes in his armour. Plasma Projectors, Or'naj thought to himself. He ran a scan on this unknown enemy assailant, and his HUD gave him all the info he needed. He targeted the right arm, and fired his Heavy Autocannon. It blew the arm off in one shot. A square marking opened around the sparking limb ending, leading off to a readout. ENEMY WEAPON DESTROYED, 0%, it read. Around the cockpit were several Strike Cannons, which Kor'nase fired. Or'naj grinned, and fired the much more numerous list of the same weapon on his mech. There were enough of them to actually make the enemy mech reel back, throwing it's aim off. Or'naj fired his Heavy Autocannon again, blowing one of the shoulder missile racks off, and taking the arm off with it. He heard an irritated groan on his intercom. The enemy fired it's jump jets, flying onto the top of a building.
"You haven't heard the last of me, fool!" Kor'nase said, firing the jets again, along with the other missile rack in midair. The missiles soared into his mech, blowing off 15% of his armour.
"Damnnnit!" Or'naj groaned, irritated.
"What, what just happened? Our sensors blacked out on you!" The commander said over the intercom.
"I just tangled with one cocky little SOB, named Kor'nase Hy'nera. Announced himself before shooting." Or'naj explained.
"And you're one lucky little SOB. He's the second-in-command for the Garan Seperatist operations on this planet. You just took on one of the big boys, Or'naj." The commander said.
"The mech he pilots is a prototype, sensor jammers, new reactor, the whole nine yards. Please tell me you did more than punch a hole in it's armour." Var'soon continued.
"I did more, I blew both it's arms off, and one of the missile racks." Or'naj gloated.

((UPDATE!))
"Not bad, Or'naj, not bad."  Var'soon admitted. "How's your armour?"
Ah...65%, sir. If it's not too much, I'd like to request a repair." Or'naj asked.
"Sure." The commander acknowledged. A hail flying repair drones were launched from the Hothgar. They scurried about his mech, repairing whatever they could. Before he knew it, his armour was back up to 98%, and his weapons were all reloaded fully. They pulled out, and he set off on his misson again. He made his way to the edge of the city, and came into a desert.

Kinda like those repair drone thingies the GDI uses in the C&C Series?

Just curious, but can they also be used to attack opponents or rip off parts from broken enemy mechs to use for repair and resupply?

((As far as space-going goes, mechs CAN operate in zero-G through a use of their jump jets and special magnetic feet pannels, designed to allow clinging to the hull of ships. It's kinda last-ditch, though. They aren't MADE for zero-G, they're just CAPABLE of it.))

((Out of boredom, and the sudden urge to write something, I'm going to revive this.))
Or'naj kept his mech at full speed, traveling along the desert. His HUD registered a couple hundred degree increase in built-up heat from the reactor and engine, nothing to the mech's numerous heat sinks. After a few more miles, he started to pick up a multitude of stationary blips, and started to come out to what looked like a savanna as well.
"Commander, I have a bunch of blips on my radar. They aren't moving, which suggests a base. Request satelite imagery." Or'naj said.
"Roger that, hold on a sec." The commander said, and sure enough, about 15 seconds later, a satelite image uploaded to HUD and superimposed itself over his sensor display, revealing a decent-sized outpost.
"Or'naj, you're gonna love this." The commander said.
"Yeah, what's up?" Or'naj asked.
"That's a mech outpost you're looking at. And according to our scans, the guard mechs are out on patrol. Best of all, there are about three hangars of Separatist mechs, powered down and pilotless at the moment. You've got a new secondary objective: Destroy the pilot housing. This will more likely than not draw the guards back. Destroy them. Do NOT let them blow the hangars. After the mechs are secure, level the rest of the base. We'll call in a recovery crew to collect the mechs afterwards." The commander explained. Or'naj laughed.
"Sounds like a cakewalk." He said, accelerating from stationary. He locked onto the pilot housing, and launched his missiles. They leveled the building. A matter of seconds later, and alarm sounded from the base. A bunch of what looked like nodes opened up, and turrets rose out of them. His scans registered each was armed with a pair of Medium Plasma Lances. These separatist variants, however, were rapid-fire, and when they hit Or'naj' Colossus, he felt it. He got a bead on one with his Heavy Autocannon, and the impact and explosion ripped the turret apart. He opened fire on a group with his lances, and they were soon rubble as well. He finished off the last one with his strike cannons. He picked up a group of moving blips on his radar about a minute later. There were five small enemy mechs on their way. He zoomed in on them, and gave on of them a migraine courtesy of his missiles. He blew the leg off another one with his Autocannons. Quite humorously, he sent one tripping into the sand by hitting one of it's torso actuators with his lances. That left two remaining. He locked onto one of the last two and fired more missiles. They pierced the cockpit, and the mech exploded. The last one stopped, finally getting close enough to see what was doing the shooting. It reversed, and then turned around full throttle. Or'naj fired one shot from his Heavy Autocannon. The mech dropped.
"Guards neutralized.' Or'naj said. He started leveling the base, and within a matter of minutes, the only buildings left standing were the hangars.
"Good work, Or'naj! Now, get moving. You still have quite a bit of ground to cover if you want to get to that base. Given that this was an outpost, it shan't be much farther." The commander said. Ornaj set back off towards his destination.
