Jesus, what are they adding to compensate? ... hexagon tiles?

I disagree! :D

The hexagonal tiles change the core game mechanic drastically seeing as they completely alter map generation; moreover, they've removed the ability to make uber unit stacks and tweaked ranged units such that it's almost an entirely different game. It seems to me that there's going to be a lot more skill and intellect required to win a game of Civ than there used to be. Not to mention all the work they're doing under the hood on the AI.

And this is just my opinion, but I didn't really think the religion or espionage added all that much to the game. The religion thing was nifty but... eh, kind of styrofoamy.

Not to metion that earlier civ games were just fine without those things, they really were just 'flavour'

On an unrelated note i still want a decent Alpha Centauri mod, the original was great and all, but i've played it too often now.

Didn't they announce Alpha Centauri 2? Or... was that just Sid saying he wanted to make Alpha Centauri 2? Hrm...

Either way, yes.

They released that expansion, alien crossfire, it was pretty decent, but not quite a sequel.

You know what it was? He did an interview with Kotaku about a month ago and said he wanted to make a sequel. Bam! I remembered! ;D

It's a shame that EA owns the rights to it.

Is it me or was the problem with Civ4 that the units where all a bit to same?

Anyway i do not think that the no stacking is really needed if the game is well balanced. In the mods i am playing the is clear disadvantage towards stacking units in the same square. (still the computer tend to do it a lot). There is also strength in numbers of course but when massive stacks get hit by a nuke (Be it a actual nuke, fireball or just traditional bombardment.) you will regret stacking. I think that a good game has many units in the same tech level category that do different jobs.

In Fall form Heaven II which i play now i have in my current game front line healers. (Two different kinds to as they have different spells for extra offensive use). One unit type that can draw agro and work as pretty good defend. Assassin type units that can take out weak units. One raid unit that can attack under cover. And a ton of other specialist all doing something else but not necessary being front line fighters. Having so much to chose form makes the game interesting and it truly shines when you use all your units at you disposal to compensate for each others weakness.

SMAC gave you this option in a way as it let you design your own units. I knew i used more and more designs tailored for different situations.

Try Planetfall. I haven't played it myself, but it is based off SMAC.

That planetfall mod looks very interesting.  I'm going to give it a shot, I'll post back here about how it is.

Yeah i have to check it out later. It has pretty graphics but is really just all about game mechanics for me. I have a hard time seeing how someone could mod in all the aspects that made SMAC interesting plus add something form new to give a reason for a mod. (Beyond improved graphics.)

If anyone test it out please tell us what you though about it.

When you get some time, be sure to check out the trailer. If it's the same one I saw on Kotaku, it plays like an after school special but is absolutely awesome!

If you do some digging, there are a couple other interviews out there where they show the gameplay in longer, less edited clips, even if someone is still talking.
