Certus - Civilization Community Game - Year 1 Month 6
« on: February 12, 2010, 03:31:07 pm »
After quite a long break I decided to try to get back to making community games. This is just an experiment with the game concept and I hope the concept will work. If it does I will probably continue with this game, if not I will go back to the planning stage, analyzing what went wrong. As most of you know I have made many games before, and I have it pretty clear to myself what went wrong with those. I have tried to adjust this game from that.

This will NOT have individual players as A Tale of Civilization had. Instead you post and discuss what should be done and what is wanted by the majority is what is aimed for to happen. At first each update will be one month of in-game time but as our tribe expands intro a civilization and maybe even an empire this will, as a lot of things change. Now, let's get going!

Certus

Certus is Latin for "settled"

You have a camp of 50 people who, by the initiative of a prominent and authoritarian young woman. Convinced of the benefits of a settled life with a safe production of food the tribe sets up a small camp and starts to discuss what must be done.

We're small enough for communism to work, so lets try to set that up as a government system. Lets also try to start some agriculture, the nearby river should allow for easy irrigation. Do we have any seeds? If not, are there any nearby tribes we could trade with, or any wild species that could be easily domesticated?

I will not show organisms on the map as that would get cumbersome when we get to a larger scale, but consider that the tribe has been a hunter / gatherer nomadic tribe that has been doing sporadic farming when setting up camps for longer periods of time and I bet it is easy to figure out that you do have access to seeds and wild animals at this point. You know of other tribes but not their location as they are nomadic.

With communism, how about the Red People? And yeah, a river-irrigated farm sounds like a good idea.
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

50 people? That is one shallow gene pool. I wouldn't kill anyone we meet, we'd need them in the tribe.

At the moment, we already have primitive communism, as there is no land and no sense of ownership.

I agree with Clarke and UFO, we need to have an efficent farm. When the number of people are farm can feed is more than the people who work on it, we can then focus other people on other things, like pottery to store the food.

The newly settled tribe focuses on building one hut that is more of a permanent hut than the other temporary living huts. In this hut everything gathered is stored to be parted equally between the population twice a day; when the sun is in the middle of the sky and when it is settling. They also spend as much time as possible to dig small ditches from the river to easily provide water to the newly planted seeds. This irrigation took a lot of time due to the tribe having no real tools for digging, something that was solved after a while however when a wooden digging stick was invented. The farm did not provide any food this month, so food was gathered in the old-fashioned way: through hunting and gathering.

At the moment, it looks like pray to the spirit of good weather. Weather comes from the sky, like birds, so the spirit of the Sky (and Good Weather) would be some sort of local bird.

Worried about the fact that the crops don't grow to well people start to pray to the weather spirits. Some are sure that it is the birds that control the weather and the weather spirit starts to take the face of a swift.

Totems are made and rituals are held where sacrifices of food were made. Still, the summer seemed to be hotter than usual; the river has almost dried out completely and the summer is not yet over.

A scouting party was sent out, but they turned back after a short while due to the blazing sun that made most stay in the shadow of their temporary stick huts.

The crops grow quite good but some plants die from the sun and the seeds they planted last month didn't give that many plants. This has led to a shortage of food and some people are eager to keep what they harvest and hunt themselves since hunger tears their minds. This has led to that some doesn't follow the rule of putting all the food gathered in the storage hut, and the political disorder is growing.

Expand croplands, and sentence those who stole the food to two days without.

Remember that you have no leader, so trying to sentence someone might be troublesome when there is political disorder.

Let three people ascend to being a shaman, they shall rule the tribe and arrange sacrifices for the gods. Build a water cystern
OK, both of you die and let us know what happens.

I'd like some more suggestions before updating. I haven't got much to go from.

Send a scouting party out of the current map's borders.
