Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
« on: February 12, 2010, 02:12:19 am »
(It's 3am, and I kinda go off-topic. Sorry)

The Olympians book series is a great read. It can get a tad childish, but overall I really like it.
Today the first movie is out. I'm going to go see it this morning.

You know, I'm glad they made a movie of it. However, books can be a personal thing, and it's kinda scary "sharing that with the world."

Ok, let's break it down into two scenarios:

Scenario 1: The movie is good
  • Everyone sees it, and you don't feel like it's special anymore (see Harry Potter)
or
  • It blows up into a huge cult hit, and you hate yourself for liking it to begin with (see Twilight)
Bottom line: Ether way, they make more (which could be good or bad)

Scenario 2: The movie is bad
  • You still like the books, and feel like you have to defend the franchise to everyone.
Bottom line: They make more movies which makes it worse, or they stop and you are stuck with the books.

Now you see the problem I run into with book movies. Anyway, moving on...

Anyone going to see it? Did anyone read the books?
If you like Greek mythology, then you'll like this series.

You can always try and get your self into the smug elitist position where you can say with confidence how you were into the series before they became mainstream movies.

I haven't seen any reviews of the films or anything so I don't know if it is any good at all. If it is I might go see it.

True, I could do that, but it's not really my style.

Anyway, It has Pierce Brosnan as a centaur  :D
That should be good a for a laugh.

I'm going to see this with my friend and some of his friends. The movie wasn't my choice, but I wanted something to do, so why not?

Haven't read the books either.

My Percy Jackson Review:

If you have read the book: Disappointing, 2 out of 5 stars
They changed so much that it's not even the same story. Yes, I know that they have to skim stuff to make it fit, but they literally changed the plot of the whole thing.

If you haven't read the book: it's a good action flick 3 out of 5 stars. It kinda feels like 300 for kids.  :P
Just a heads up it's 2 hours long. So be prepared for that

Couple things I noted when seeing this movie (haven't read the book):

1. Like most Greek myth movies, Hades is a bad guy, while Poseidon is a good guy - not so in the mythology.

2. Is the camp make up ENTIRELY of "demigods"? Because if it is, the gods must really get around.

3. Building on that last point, all of the gods were closely related; mainly cousins, siblings, etc. Athena, for example, is the daughter of Zeus. Whose brother is Poseidon. So Poseidon is Athena's uncle. So Percy and Athena's daughter are...cousins?

4. There's a "Citizen Kane" Easter Egg in this movie. Right as the ferryman describes the "lost hopes and dreams of humans," Rosebud floats by in the lower right corner.

5. Cow-tapult!

At point two: Considering this is Greek mythology, I wouldn't put it past the gods to sleep around.

lol, they cover that in the book. Being related on your god side of the family doesn't count. Now, you wouldn't date someone from your own cabin (Having the same god mother or father), but it's ok to date someone in other cabins since "gods don't have DNA"

Or that's there excuse in the book

Couple things I noted when seeing this movie (haven't read the book):
1. Like most Greek myth movies, Hades is a bad guy, while Poseidon is a good guy - not so in the mythology.

Believe it or not, Hades wasn't the bad guy in the book. He wasn't even going after the bolt. He was chasing Percy because he thought he stole his helm of darkness (Another god item). The true bad guy in the whole series is chronos who luke is working for

Also, Percy's mom is the one who stays in hell, and hades lets her go when he percy gets his helm back for him.

All and all, they wont make another one because they messed with the story so much that it would go even further off the path.

Now, Chronos would be an awesome bad guy. We was awesome in Age of Mythology, there is no reason he can't be awesome now.

Agreed. I just found it amusing how they managed to avoid the fact that many of the gods were having affairs. Poseidon's wife is Amphitrite, for example.

Did anyone else catch the Rosebud reference?

I liked the movie, but the second cousin romance and fire-and-brimstone Hades were unsettling.

Considering this is a movie based upon a (series of?) book(s) my 12 year old brother enjoys...I'll pass.

Also it's based on myth. From what I can tell, somewhat inaccurately. Makes me squirm.
