'One Drawing A Day' Challenge #2 (ended)
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:10:11 am »
Welcome to the 2nd 'One Drawing A Day' Challenge.
(this post has been reorganized and edited a little compared to the previous challenge; please take a minute to read it)

BADGE EDIT:
Badges available for this month--

Gec made these ones for me!
Badge of Antiquity, take this badge if you only made traditional, non-digital drawings.

Badge of the Future, take this badge if you only used a pen tablet.

Badge of Ghetto, take this badge if you only used MSPaint (pre-Windows7) or a mouse

(since these all imply participation, there won't be a nonspecific participation badge)
(also, there was no completion this month. >.>)
Badge Template (.PSD)
Those who are so inclined can also download my little template here.
Help out by making some badges for the challenge! They can be symbolic, iconic, or just cool looking.
Please keep the picture on it clear and homemade. When you're done, PM them to me as PNG-24 with transparency.

Since I no longer have Photoshop, I'm gonna have to figure something out here.

This challenge will run from Monday February 8th and conclude on Tuesday March 9th. Another 30 days.
Challenge #3 will likely begin on March 10th. There will perhaps be an optional theme to follow, for those interested.
But we'll get there when we get there.  :)

The challenge between the above dates has ended.
Challenge #3 will commence on Friday, March 12.
Everyone can feel free to use the thread for commentary and discussion. Please don't abuse this.

For this month, there will not be a theme. It will be the same general drawing as month 1.

For those in need an explanation, let's go over everything.

What we want out of you is just one drawing each day for one month.

Post whatever you can come up with. That's your doodles, paintings, sketches. Whether you're using a mouse in paint, a pen tablet with photoshop, or a pencil-paper-scanner scheme. It's all good.
This challenge is all about practice and experience. That's invaluable, and it goes a long way.
Experiment, challenge yourself to draw something out of your league, entertain the forum with your artistic wit.

We do impose just a few rules however.
(1)Your drawings have to have been created recently for the challenge itself. So no old stuff.
(2)This is all for fun and practice! So please put some level of honest effort into your work. Scribbly junk is kinda frowned upon.
(3)Keep an eye on your file size before you post. If you can't make it much smaller or lose some of the image quality, post a thumbnail and link somewhere offsite for the full image.

Other guidelines--
You may be allowed to catch up if you miss a day or two, but don't disappear for too long.
Please try not to fall too far behind if you plan on doing a catch-up. If you think you'll have problems keeping up, just try to give yourself five minutes out of the day to draw something, anything.
Try to join in by at least the first week; it'll help you get used to the idea of doing this every day, and it'll make the later challenges much easier.
Those that do join in a little late may post a few drawings at once to catch yourself up to everyone else, one for each day you missed.

Otherwise, don't fret too much about it.
Basically just draw something up every day and show it off in this thread!

In one month (or thirty days after the challenge begins), we will conclude. All those who have completed the challenge can opt to use a neat little badge they can show off in their signature.
They will be posted here after the challenge is over.

We aim to keep the challenges rolling. When this one ends, the next one starts up.

No sign-up necessary. Start whenever you're ready.
Have at 'er!

Credits to Flisch for the idea, conferring with GD and myself to come up with a solid method of bringing it to you guys.
I'm just the topic creator guy.  :-*
Additional thanks to everyone who participated. Have fun, and good luck!

It's been suggested that the challenges should have a sort of break between them.
I was thinking maybe two days? So for example if it ended on the 7th, you'd take the 8th and 9th off for sure, and then it would start back up on the 10th.
Maybe a day's break at the 15-day mark? Though that would be harder to do, as people would likely just blow past it and keep going.
I don't want to have to lock the thread so everyone has to take breaks.

So I guess we'll just stick to breaks between challenges.

I know people have lives and all. I suppose I initially figured people who needed a break would just have to miss the first couple of days.
In that case though you'd be missing out on completing half the challenges during the year.
So yeah, I like the idea.

What do you guys think though? Two days too much or too little?
Or should we just keep it rolling no matter what?

A break is a good idea, yeah, otherwise it just becomes one big challenge.
Maybe I'm just being lazy, but two days sounds a bit too short. I'm just gonna wait on the opinions of others though, since I'm known to be lazy :P

I don't mind this as long as people put effort into their drawing and challenge themselves every now and then.

Day 2

(since these were so quick and meaningless, I'm counting them all as one.
Did them all within the same hour anyway.)

Good God, what the hell is wrong with me...
So you get the idea. I timed myself. Five minutes to make a comic. Alarm goes off, I stop.
It's kind of an exercise I guess, or at least a good way to show off how incredibly slow I am.  :P

Well!
Let's have a look.

First attempt. Fail.

Second. Fail.

Third. Fail. Are you seeing a pattern here?

Fourth. Fail. Slow as a snail.

Fifth. Fail. Go straight to jail.

Sixth was success. At long last!

Seventh climbs the ladder to success.
Went with stating the obvious instead of an actual punchline. Lame.

Eighth unfortunately bucks the recent trend.

Successfail?

Well, that's enough of that.
It's a bit harder than I imagined.

I need to try this.

Also, that last one was awesome.

Also, Clarke, it should be fine so long as you drew those Sagan 4 pictures today.  We can't have you just digging up pictures you drew months ago.

I plan on participating in round two, whenever it starts. Keep up the good work!

The 8th.

I'm behind!

Yes, I know that was from the other thread.

Edit: Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

And thus begins my adventure in learning how to draw with a tablet. I think the dog turned out the best of these three.

That's how I make most of my faces.  Draw the head shape and work from there.

Day 3
Using LuigiL's shapes from his own challenge..

First I did some heads. Then came the weird stuff.
You can vaguely see the original lines in there.
I was gonna colorize them faintly, but it'd be too distracting.

Also, I sort of did the shape thing with that blue line. I just closed my eyes and made a scribble.

Is it too late for me to join in on this? I missed the beginning, so do I have to wait for the new one?

Incase that's not the case (which I imagine to be so) here's a concept art of a Xi (a Luros-B race) outside the limitations of Spore:

If i'm wrong i'll just edit it out of the post, but eh. I need something to do.

Day 4
Started with regular head doodling, but thought I'd try out more shape exercises.
This time I used ink blot looking things. Silhouettes.
Might make an exercise later to revisit these guys, perhaps redesign. I'd have done a bit of that already but it's late and my hand hurts.

For my next couple of drawings though, I think I'll do more of these.
Might give me an excuse to get better at mecha stuff.

Apparently, layers don't co-operate well when exporting from Pencil.

Day 4

I took out my timer and spent half a minute on each face.  Not that flattering, but I think it's an interesting exercise for training speed.

Day 5

Here's a finished version of one of my thirty second faces, plus the first tablet-made Ezroth.  The hair's a little off, but I like it as a whole.

Dear God, it's like you have a tube of Prangles. Not pringles. Prangles. They are an endless tube of chips that, after you eat one, you will not be able to stop, you will not be able to eat anything else, and you will keep eating them until you die of it. Search it on the SCP Foundation site.

Start silkscreening those tshirts and get on the line to the cheapest korean animation house which can be legally employed to make cartoons fit for screening to western audiences.

Well, alright. I love the exercise, but I think it's time to find something a little different.
Like I said, I'll probably revisit a couple of these designs down the line, later this month perhaps.

Dream Characters

Characters from a dream I had the other night.
Mr. Grim the preacher, Mr. Bounce the gentleman, and the Inspector. If I can get better at drawing these character designs I have a plan kicking around my head for a murder mystery story which can be done in a thread.

You know you're meant to draw these things specifically for this challenge, right hydro?

I doubt anyone would begrudge you the occasional recycled picture but its sort of boring seeing stuff you did for something else all the time.

The Pro versions run about 100 bucks. Of course, it costs more in Canadian money.

What I don't like is that it doesn't have Photoshop adjustments like hue and saturation. And I had a lot of trouble finding an eye dropper tool in there. So yeah, you'll still be dependent on PS for coloring.

It picks up better with a tablet than PS, that's for sure.

I tried for the first and second pictures but after that I was just too busy to draw for this and for Sagan 4. No offensive to this but Sagan 4 take priority over my drawings.

Infact both of you should submit a species to Sgan 4. Its been awhile for you Krakow Sam and some of your lineages are still around. As for you Gec I have yet to have you do one. I know the team would love to see you draw a species for Sagan 4.

Alright then. Missed a couple. I'll try to catch up on one, but I'm gonna have to miss two.

For now, HEADS.
Day 8

Also, since 5-7 days break between challenges won, I've another poll up.
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure a break would be a good idea. Another big point about this challenge is to help people kick any laziness habits they've got, aside from the important practice part of it.
But it's fine. We're here now. We'll try it out. Even if the thread has a break for those who need it time, the rest of us can just do merry doodles or what have you.
EDIT: You know.. the previous poll is a little questionable considering we only have so many people actively participating in this thing, and yet over 20 people voted on it.  :-X

My instinct would be to say five days, but I just think that a week would be easier to keep track of, you know?

Edit: finally catching up a little.
Day 6

I'm shocked.  I can actually see a resemblance.

Day 7

Nation, CLEARLY the only thing more American than me is my mad snoopy skillz.

I think I'm going to switch back to Flash soon.

Aeraphi Redesign Concept

The Aeraphi are an insect-like Spore race I came up with. I'm distancing the Luros-B Galaxy from Spore in general and coming up with less humanoid and (hopefully) more alien designs for each of the races. The Aeraphi are one of the two most important along with the KOR (remember them?) so a decent image for them is important.

Day 9

Doodling like old times. Probably the same thing for tomorrow, and then I'll start another exercise for a few days.

EDIT: By the way, we'll be trialing this break thing between each challenge like we've voted on-- the next one at least, maybe another one if it's unclear.
To be honest, I was gonna veto the whole thing.
Don't sweat it though. We'll give it a shot. If we see an improvement in participation, then great. If not, I'll either reduce it or get rid of it altogether.
Simple as that.  8)

I still think a lot of you guys should feel more free to jump in at any time. Completion isn't as important as just drawing each day, getting some valuable practice out of it; and steady output will help you get used to drawing more and more. You can just draw whatever at the drop of a hat. That's the plan anyway.
Unless you're studying or dealing with serious business, I don't think sparing as little as fifteen minutes to jot something down is asking too much, is it?

But anyway, good luck. We've still got like 20 days left to go.
I'm gonna go make dinner and get started.

Guess I'll just keep going.

Day 10

Almost gave up in frustration because I couldn't do anything interesting or different. Didn't want to doodle heads, didn't want to do more expressions, shapes, etc.
Came so close to just closing the program and skipping the day but I was pretty determined.
So I ended up doing some profiles. That's something new, sorta.

I WILL catch up!
Day 8

Hate to say it, but he IS the least memorable character.  Even Jar-Jar is more recognized than him.

Day 09

I've never figured out the logic behind this.  I mean, he's RON.

Day 10

And now for something completely different.

Day 11

It was looking pretty good until I added the moon laser...

Day 12

Forgive the horrible squiggles on the Ring, I'm too lazy to look up the actual glyphs.

Day 13

Umm... yeah.

So let's see... Started on the 8th, it's now the 27th, should be on day 19.  Looks like I have six to go.

Wow, not as bad as I thought.

Nothing spectacular. Just trying to keep up with the drawing.

Hell, I'll just double post.
So I'd recently installed Windows 7. I was transferring everything over, except for a few things.
No more Photoshop. I'm making a clean break.

Been trying out Autodesk Sketchbook pro. I might buy it.
It's very simplistic and snazzy. It runs well, and it's really comfortable.

I'll post my doodle page later on today. Been working on one between all the other things I'm doing lately.

EDIT: Cool. I love it when I'm drawing, I go away for a bit, then when I come back the brushes aren't cooperating.
So for no visible reason I go from this small-tipped pencil brush to this overly sensitive, really dark crap.
Bleh.
EDIT2: Aha! Found you, you sneaky bastard.
"Stylus Responsiveness" was turned all the way down for some.. well, no. No reason.
No reason at all. I had nothing to do with it, unless there was some sort of shortcut key tied to it.
A shortcut key that I find no reference to whatsoever.

Grr.
Oh well. Lesson learned.

EDIT3:
Day 16
More doodlecrap. Spent a lot of time setting up and adjusting to the software. Wasted some time looking up and trying out others.
I think I've found one I like.
My hand started to cramp up though so I had to stop.

I'll maybe try something different tomorrow.

Uh.. triple.

Badges are up. I know it's early, but it seems pretty clear we all know the results of this month.
Not that this is a disappointment. It's good to draw. Finding any reason to draw, like participating in this thread, helps you a lot more than you may know.
Let's try even harder for the coming months. This is far from over.

I've got two days of drawings to get on here shortly.
They were drawing on regular paper at like midnight before bed though. Gotta scan them in.

EDIT: After some driver and software related adventures, here we are.

My origional intention was to stick with it.  But I fell behind over reading week.  This month I should be fine.  Classes are finishing up but there's still time before exams.  I look forward to it.

I guess the big question is uh.. do we still need a break?
Seven days still seems pretty unnecessary at this point.

How about we start up again on Friday or so?

Some sort of buggery going on with this challenge's badges. I don't get it.
I guess I might have to move them.
Don't understand why it's only these three but none of the rest.
EDIT: Strangely, only the ones that Gec made crapped out. Why they did this after a few days of working just fine, I have no idea.
But I copy+pasted and resaved them as the same file type and name. All is well.
Very strange issue.
