Aquatica- First Contact of the Protoik
« on: January 28, 2010, 07:46:10 pm »
Underwater, in a shallow costal region, lay a civilisation. A civilisation made all of life, structures of life, inhabitants of life. Among nearby rock piles lay several Suppliers, slowly munching on rocks, working nigh-tirelessly to feed the masses. An Enforcer swam by above, keeping peace from hostile predators. A massive Fusion Center lay a short distance away. Suddenly, the roof opened, revealing a membrane appearing to be of liquid. this also opened, and a newly grown Supplier swam out to assit in the endless chore of gathering food. A Protocellular Constructor swam out as well, and swam over a short distance from the Fusion Center. It inverted, face down. It swam down, driving it's head into the mud. It's stiff tentacles rooted it in place. It's shell skin folded open as it contracted, revealing massive racks full of an orange substance, held in by a membrane. These opened, and the substance, actually massed clumps of Protoik cells, Fused together around the contracting Constructor. Over the next few hours, this mass would grow into a Resource Node, allowing the weary Suppliers to empty their precious cargo for others to feast upon at whim. A Probe spead by, always hunting for new sources of food. It bobbed and weaved through a coral formation, just out of sight of the Suppliers. Several Consumers came out from the Fusion Center to assist the Suppliers further in their collection. Little did this new coloney of Protoik know, they would soon be the first of the Protoik to interact with an alien race...

A large patch of distorted space reveals itself as a Choro Deidalus exploration vessel entered the newly discovered system.

They were conducting a survey of the local cluster and found the planet within the range of habitability for most known creatures in the galaxy. There was a high chance of life, if not civilization, existing in the new system.

They will find out soon enough.

Within the few seconds, the few actual spacecraft the Protoik had were swarming around the new ship. They tried to make contact.
"Welcome to our systems, fellow life-forms! We are the Protoik!"

"Alert!", one of the crew said. "There seems to be objects of unknown, but certainly artificial origin, approaching us! And they're sending a message!"

"Xenos... So the calculations were right...", a prominent-looking figure said as he stood up from what seemed to be the captain's chair. "Attempt to translate the message..."

"Already at it!", another crew member said to the captain.

"Tell me when it's ready... And ready a probe..."

Outside, the Choro Deidalus vessel could clearly be seen slowing down, though it still maintained it's engine, just in case things don't go as planned.

The Protoik ship appearing to be the leader ship sent a reply.
//Tell us, newcomers, how well do you handle underwater environments, so long as you can be provided with breathing apparatuses?//

"Welcome to our systems, fellow life-forms! We are the Protoik!"

"The Protoik...", the captain mused. "Interesting."

"Sir. We are getting another message from the xenos- err, Protoik.", one of his subordinates said.

"Tell us, newcomers, how well do you handle underwater environments, so long as you can be provided with breathing apparatuses?"

"This is truly swell, so far.", the captain answered. "Release the probe."

Outside the vessel, a small probe can be seen being ejected towards the locals' direction. It sprang to life as it started sending a return message.

//Thank you for welcoming us in such a kind manner.

Before we forget...//

Suddenly, the small drone produced a monitor from one of it's many compartments. The screen opened, revealing a live video feed of the expeditionary ship's main deck.

//... we are the Choro Deidalus, and it is a pleasure to be here with you.

As for the offer, much thanks. However, we are already in the possession of portable breathing and ambulation equipment. We would, however, be quite grateful if you can inform us of the general conditions of the local underwater environments.//

//We'd be delighted!//

Inside the ship, a surface detachment was already being established. In anticipation of the need to split up, the detachment was divided into four separate teams, with the captain leading the first team and other high-ranking officers leading the rest of the groups. All in all, the amassed Choro Deidalus numbered in the sixties.

Quickly, they boarded the dropships and set forth to follow the locals' path.
