[AC] The Crossroads of Viri Malikei
« on: January 09, 2010, 07:06:06 pm »

     Loneliness...

The thought that lingered in the minds of the An Rani Malikei who were manning the vessels commissioned for Project Vali Malikei.

Ever since their departure from An Rani Malikei territory, they have been disconnected from the government and prompted to form their own organizational system. Some thought of it as unsettling, while other considered the process a rather refreshing experience. Still, everyone agreed that it was very, very unlike what they were previously used to back in Gava Malikei.

Regardless of their concerns, they would all have to put them aside for now. They were almost at their primary destination.

As the formation of vessels were fast approaching Viri Malikei, the effects of the gravitational singularity became ever more apparent. When the spacecrafts were only several lightweeks away from their target, the crew quickly disengaged their warp bubbles and slipped back into normal space. This was to avoid any risk of the black hole's massive gravity well interfering with the fleet's FTL systems, which could prove fatal for the entire mission.

Everyone grew excited at the prospect of seeing the place that their ancestors once called home. Still, a certain understandable fear lingered in the back of the An Rani Malikei's minds...

What could have possibly caused such a cataclysm?

Whether they would find out, and whether they would accept it, only time can tell...

Several months have passed since their arrival at Viri Malikei.

The fleet has begun sending both manned and unmanned probes into the highly unstable star system. Researchers all across the fleet have already started gathering information and comparing it to the data that their predecessors carried with them during their exodus from Viri Adinei.

     The findings were, quite disturbing...

All major bodies in the system, save for the star itself, had already been engulfed by the gravitational singularity. No sign of civilization was left, save for some unmanned space drones which still lingered in the area, long after their creators have perished.

Somewhat disappointed, the crew decided to do the next best thing. Analyze the data stored within the salvaged machines and base their extrapolations from there.

It will be no easy task for the fleet, as the coding used in the machines' data drives are several thousand years old. They could only hope that their efforts would produce something legible. They would have to use whatever remained of their predecessors' records regarding the before time.

Three years have passed since then and the staff in charge of deciphering the artifacts' data drives have announced that they have almost completed their work. The only thing left was to translate the code into a readable format. Everyone waited patiently for the day that they would finally find the answer to their age-old questions.

Finally, after several days of translating all the code, the researchers have finally created a comprehensive database containing all the information recovered from the probes. The only thing left to do was to read it.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and directed their attention to the conference that was being held at the expedition's main flagship. The answer to their questions would now be revealed to them.

After everything was set, the person who headed the decoding effort took his place at the podium, and after a short moment of silence, eventually began to speak.

To all the people who are part of this amazing expedition, good day to you all.

As you may have heard through the central thought network, our team has, for the past three years, been deeply involved in deciphering the data that the fleet recovered from the probes that we have been picking up during our stay here in Viri Malikei.

Well, I would like to announce to all of you, that we have finally finished the said task and are ready to reveal it's contents to the entire crew, which made all of this possible.

Without much else, we hereby present to all of you, the records from a time long past.

The true reason for the cataclysm of Viri Malikei...

At the speaker's whim, the database was forwarded to all subordinate thought networks.

     Their reaction to the discovery...

     Was rather unsettling.

Piles upon piles of data poured into everyone's minds as the feed began. Slowly, everyone started to feel rather unpleasant as they read further and further into the findings.

It seems that their guess wasn't far from the truth. The gravitational singularity in the system truly was artificial.

But that wasn't what shocked them the most...

As they opened a certain "Record #05-02-4925" from a probe named "Imperial System Probe #55-77-32", their worst nightmare would finally become reality.

The ones who did this vile atrocity to the cradle of Viri Adineian life, were none other than, the Viri Voltei themselves.

Upon analyzing the entire document, the crew discovered that a space-based laboratory located somewhere in the system was taken over by a prominent splinter faction of the anti-imperialist rebellion. Originally created to house a device designed to warp the fabric of space to facilitate FTL, the machine was converted into a weapon capable of untold destructive potential.

Somewhere along the refitting process, however, things went awry and a disastrous malfunction caused the device to run amok and warp the surrounding area, so much in fact that it ripped apart the very fabric of space. The tear in space was substantial enough to cause the formation of a black hole, which unfortunately for them, didn't simply go away.

Within a month, the entire system was completely sterilized.

The An Rani Malikei felt a very mortal chill run through their back as it became apparent that their predecessor, the Great Empire of Zintra, was undone by nothing more than a fledgling attempt at FTL gone wrong.

As for "Record #05-02-4925", it shall be known to the An Rani Malikei as the document which showed them the truth, becoming one of the, if not most, important surviving record of their predecessor's dark, war-torn history.

Several months have passed since then, and everyone is once again knee deep in their work.

With a more serious tone, they continue to salvage anything they can find in the system. Probes, satellites, space junk, everything they can find which can help them further unlock the mystery behind the last days of the Great Empire of Zintra.

Progress has been relatively faster, ever since the fleet recovered several satellites containing the trajectories of some of the Viri Voltei's space-bound relics.

And just when they thought that those satellites would be the last major finds they will gather within the year, they were soon going to come face to face with possibly the greatest discovery of the entire expedition...

Those diplomats that they dragged along with them would finally come into good use.

Anxiety. The prevailing emotion within the singularity as one of their probes approached a mysterious object of unknown origin.

Two months have passed since the fleet discovered the small vessel orbiting the outer limits of the star system. Upon considering the object's possible artificial nature, the crew dispatched an assortment of intelligence drones to investigate the lone craft.

As the An Rani Malikei's machines flew closer and closer towards the figure, their sensors started recording a very familiar visage. The vessel possessed the following characteristics...

It's form had a tremendous presence, yet was surprisingly sleek, perfect for surviving both long-drawn operations and massive kinetic impacts. It's shade was as dark as night, suitable for purposes that required an extremely low profile. And all across it's surface were sprinkled extremely minute ports and flaps, possibly used to tuck any protruding features back into it's innards, which would greatly aid in keeping the vessel's smooth appearance.

It was, undoubtedly, of Viri Voltei design.

When the video feed finally reached the fleet, everyone was at a frenzy. They had discovered a vessel of Viri Voltei design, and upon further inspection, it seems that it isn't as old as they previously thought it was.

The fleet's many laboratories produced very similar results when they began dating surface samples from the vessel.

It was no older than five hundred years old. Too

Several weeks later, the craft itself has been carried back to the fleet for further testing.

As the craft entered one of the An Rani Malikei's research vessels, several crewmen quickly attended to the artifact as they began preparations for transferring it into one of the more larger holding cells.

However, just as one of the team touched the object's dusty shell using his powered suit, something very unexpected happened.

The crewman experienced a massive surge of energy enter him through his suit. As the current reached his head, thoughts that were his own, or of any other personnel for that matter, began flooding his conscious mind. He was pummeled in all directions by multiple emotions flashing in front of him all at the same moment. And just when he thought that he could no longer hold on to his swiftly deteriorating sanity, the wave of energy suddenly let out one final blast, which was followed by silence.

As the others finally took notice, they too were quickly stunned. But not because they were flooded by a stream of thoughts, but simply because of a single harrowing image that they saw with their own minds.

The mind-warped crewman lied unconscious on the floor as his co-workers stood in shock. Several security bots along with a couple of military powered suits poured in from multiple entrances, surrounding the newly recovered vessel.

But just as they were about to raise their weapons at the craft, a massive cloud of gas burst forth from the top of the craft, covering the immediate area with an unbelievably think fog which somehow jammed the soldiers' multi-spectrum targeting systems. As the fog cleared, they too were stunned, for a moment, by the visage that came before them.

A Viri Voltei, but with wings. Wings which took the form of carrion and emitted an incredibly sickening glow, similar to that of rusting matter. Aside from it's ghastly appearance, the creature also spread a horribly foul aura as it emerged from it's curled state, spreading it's wings wide open and letting out a howl of low intensity electric current.

It was too much of an unwholesome sight that one of the soldiers almost lost consciousness.

As everyone finally regained their grip, the heavily distorted entity turned it's mind towards one of the officers.

"AW CRA-", was the only thing he could say before he was pummeled with an incredibly dense stream of thought.

His signal soon disappeared from the singularity.

A month has passed since the incident and the crew suffered almost thirty casualties due to the attack.

Who knew that such a... thing... would find it's way inside a Viri Voltei spacecraft?

Regardless, studies on both the assailant and the vessel are still ongoing, and so far the crew weren't getting any closer in solving the mystery behind the sudden rampage by the hybrid being. One thing was for sure, however...

Whatever it was fused with, chances were slim that it originated from Viri Adinei.

Just as the fleet began to lose hope, a discovery was made by one of the research teams in charge of the recovered vessel.

Logs. Travel logs, to be precise.

If converted into modern code properly, it would allow them to trace the craft's origin, and with it, uncover the truth behind the events that led to the vicious event.

After weighing the options, the fleet decided to return home with their findings, and report the incident to the main singularity.

The entire population would be needed for such a heavy decision.

The king's stance on the incident would decide whether the whole of An Rani Malikei would continue their life of peace, or like their ancestors, be embroiled in another bloody war.

After several centuries of travel, both to and from Viri Malikei, the An Rani Malikei fleet finally returned to the main singularity.

Their return sparked a massive surge of discovery, helping the race rediscover it's long, dark past.

Something was of greater importance than this, however...

The king has heard of the incident and has decided to send a diplomatic effort to the assailants and at the same time strengthen the An Rani Malikei military, if the former ever went sour.

And with that, a new and improved fleet was sent towards the attacker's vessel's primary point of origin, most of it's crew taken directly from the people of Project Vali Malikei.

With hopes of peace, and if not possible, victory in their minds, the crew set sail for parts previously uncharted. Straight into the heart of the beings which they called the "Hybrids".

With the aid of faster FTL, the diplomatic fleet arrived at their destination faster than usual, though still at a snail's pace.

Regardless, the crew promptly made preparations for contact with the "Hybrids". Using different wavelengths of radiation at varying frequencies, the Ar Rani Malikei attempted to establish a line of communication.

     Eventually, they succeeded.

The very first moments were filled with tension as both sides slowly built up their vocabularies. Thanks to their mutual origin, the two civilizations quickly established a proper conversation. That was when things truly started to heat up.

The "Hybrids" introduced themselves as the "Viri Aiueo", claiming themselves to be a people of peace. The An Rani Malikei had their doubts, however, due to the previous incident.

Things started slow, with both sides not being completely trustful of the other, with the An Rani Malikei more so.

Things would only start to cool down when the An Rani Malikei finally offered to send a group of diplomats to the An Aiueo's home planet.

As the group set foot on the planet, they were quickly overwhelmed by a multitude of emotions. However, unlike last time, it produced no adverse effects whatsoever. In fact, this particular one had an extremely soothing, almost heavenly, sensation to it.

They had entered the territory of the great gestalt. The focal point of An Aiueo civilization.

At the same time, the gestalt, and everyone connected to it, realized the reason for the visitors' distrustful demeanor.

The singularity saw it fit to make them realize that the one which they encountered during their expedition to Viri Malikei was nothing but a remnant of the agressors during the "Viri Voltei - Aiueo War."

The crew eventually yielded and a pact was signed, forming the very first agreement between the two singularities.

A small detachment would be sent back to the An Rani Malikei king to inform the main singularity of the developments.

From that encounter onward, the bond between the two civilizations only became stronger.

And with the subsequent encounters with the Viri An Sama and the Viri An Rani Nalanei, the union grew even greater.

Eventually, the four singularities would encounter the neighboring Viri An Zintra, who were themselves already in possession of one of the, if not the most, expansive territory of the successor civilizations.

The four would eventually unite with the Zintra, forming an unbroken union between five great singularities.

And they would be known to others, as the Viri Isa, the Living Singularities...
