[AC] Crystals and Carbon
« on: January 04, 2010, 01:36:18 pm »
Alpha Quadrant, Sector (2,0)

The scouting mission was going as planned.  The probes going out in all directions were gathering incalculable amounts of data that could aid the Crystalion.  A habitable planet with a lot of iron, a gas giant that had plenty of noble gases in its atmosphere, and an asteroid belt.  The 4 L,LF,MF,HR-Q,LP,LP,LP, or to imitate it in sound, would be Rouli, was a medium sized ship, about 100 Crystalion in radius.  Its purpose was mostly scientific, and was succeeding marvelously at it.

Things were going smoothly, the crew oozing through the corridors without much question.  However, in a distant system, there was a very imposing question that needed to be answered.  The energy output of the system in question was much higher than should be for a system of its profile.  There was indeed life, but, there were what looked like roads on the surface.  The walls hummed as the various options were weighed.

Should they go, or should they explore an alternate route of investigation?

It was decided.  They would go to the system and launch an unmanned probe to see how civilized the system was.  Then they would see if it was in their best interests to contact them.

Delta Quadrant, Sector (2,-1), Cyro System

I took many weeks, but the Rouli eventually reached the edge of the system with the strange roads.  The probe was launched, and streaked on towards the main inhabited planet.

Delta Quadrant, Sector (2,-1), Cyro System, Yerx, Empire of Sahrzhir, Vnzem, Imperial Palace

Emperor Zvirnnau VII of the Zvau Dynasty awoke from a good hour-long sunrise sleep. He rose up on all sixes and crawled backwards across the stone wall of his sleeping room and out the door. The murderer of thousands was known for his love of theatrics, even if no one was present. He dropped off the polished wall once he reached the hall decorated with tapestries of him and the Imperial Symbol. On the thirty-sixth floor, the view from the carefully cut glass windows was fantastic. He took a step outside onto a balcony. The only clouds in the sky were the gases of the multicolored nebula, but that was to be expected. After all, it was the summer season. He breathed in a good whiff of the breezy river air through his plating, and proclaimed,

"I am lord of all I survey and more still. I look forward to the day when all Yerxe bow down to me, Immortal King of Kings!"

Suddenly, he felt a tremble in the stone floor beneath his clawed feet and a slight whoosh in the air through his back plating. In half a second, the Emperor had a sword drawn at the stranger's chest. As usual, it was simply Kravgohn, Head of the Department of Scientific Research.

"Keeping in practice, eh, Your Holiness?"

He sheathed his sword and stepped back. "As always. Tell me, what news has come today?"

"Well, some replacement Shrakk'im have arrived to serve as your faithful steeds after your previous one was slain in battle, may the Rivers carry his soul to the Afterlife."

"They aren't being handled by filthy four-limbs, are they?"

"Of course not, Your Greatness, only the most professional six-limbed Yerxe. You know, I have some interesting scientific news for you."

Zvirnnau was really interested now. Kravgohn was the one who devised the heat ray that used mirrors to set enemy soldiers in a blaze from afar.

"Well, let's hear it!"

"I was just making my nightly astronomical recordings last evening when I noticed a strange star. It seemed to blink with light, and it did not show up on any of our charts. This is something I have never experienced before, and it could mean something very important to your reign."

"Perhaps the Nebula has created a new star and is sending it to our world to show my rightful dominion over all of Yerx!"

"Maybe so, Your Majesty. Maybe so..."

The probe was completing its scan of the planet, and had determined that the life was sentient.  However, a determination of their civility would require closer surveilance.  To that end, the probe went into the atmosphere, and went to the largest concentration of sentients.  Their "appearance" was very bizarre to the Crystalion, who were used to seeing the electrical patterns of the amorphous creatures that inhabited Crystalia Prime.  It then went and hovered over the city and commenced scanning the structures for composition and technique.

Empire of Sahrzhir, Vnzem

Zvirnnau VII glanced up at the sky. At the edge of the Nebula, he could make out a shining light. His hearts began to pound.

"Quickly, Kravgohn, is that the location of the blinking star?"

The astronomer turned to look. "Why, yes, Your Exalted Highness... Why... Yes..."

Kravgohn whirled around at a speed quick for even a Yerxe. His eyes were wide, and his arms were visibly shaking. He suddenly gripped the Emperor's sides and spoke in a weirdly excited yet ominous voice, leaning closer and closer to Zvirnnau.

"This is it. Right now, the omens are coming true. You are the One True Emperor. Your ancestors did not match your divinity, and now, at long, long last, YERX IS OURS! THE RIVERS SHALL PART FOR OUR ARMIES, THE SANDS WILL SWALLOW OUR ENEMIES, AND YOU WILL BE HERALDED AS THE DIVINE EMPEROR OF THE MATERIAL UNIVERSE! Come now, the Gods wait for no Yerxe!"

Kravgohn released Zvirnnau from his grip and jumped off the balcony, running down the sloped palace walls. The Emperor quickly followed. As they passed by the Training Grounds, Kravgohn spotted Moh'rak, Head of the Department of Law Enforcement.

"Quickly, inform our people! The shining light is coming closer, and it is the Messenger of the Nebula! The prophecies are true, and Zvirnnau VII is the Divine Emperor! Let the people know of this historic event!"

Moh'rak raced off, and Kravgohn and Zvirnnau headed towards the Royal Stables. The Emperor quickly chose the largest and fiercest Shrakk'im to ride, and its ten legs galloped over buildings towards Imperial Square. A crowd had gathered to see the bright object speeding toward the city, and they quickly parted and bowed to the Emperor. Kravgohn dismounted and started flailing his arms about, informing every curious bystander of the prophecy's readily apparent truth. Zvirnnau VII looked directly at the object, thinking of his destiny. It seemed to be slowing down, and he could make out some details of it as it dimmed in its fiery brightness.

All Yerxe looked up and grew silent as the cylinder with the warped skin hovered directly above the Emperor and started to hum strangely. Many knelt down and prayed in its direction.
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

The probe directed its scans at the massing crowd.  Their reaction was puzzling.  There was no word for worship in their language, but their designation in Cyrstalion would most closely mean "Worshipping Ones".  The scans were having a hard time scanning them, they had much harder exteriors than anything on Crystalia Prime.  The probe descended, making the air whip around it, blowing the dirt all around.  A long needle like projection came out of an arm on the side of the probe, and moved towards a random Worshipping One.  It then stuck the needle sensor into them, sending pulses of electricity out of it, not enough to kill, but likely painful for non-Crystalion species.  This allowed the probe to "see" what it looked like, as well as internal structures and what-have-you.

Zvirnnau VII looked on in awe as the heavenly cylinder descended upon the crowd. Suddenly, a large, pointed sword flew out of it and pierced a nobleman. The crowd drew back in fear as he shook for a while, then collapsed to the ground as the rapier-like object retreated back into the cylinder. It was simply due to the psychological shock experienced by him, but no one knew that. The Emperor leaned close to an imperial guard and whispered,

"Make sure to kill him if he's not already dead. He has obviously invoked the wrath of the Gods."

Everyone jumped as the cylinder started to move again. Their feelings were a strange mixture of fright and wonder, as well as whatever the Yerxe equivalent of adrenaline is. Zvirnnau watched as the hovering object drew close to him, perhaps attracted by his large and curious-looking Shrakk'im steed. But no! He quickly cleared such thoughts out of his mind. This thing obviously recognized him as Divine Emperor.

Meanwhile, In deeps space, Location Longitude 1.99, Latitude -1...

The massive probe drifted, constantly surveying the core systems and their incomprehensibly large gravitational pull. To the mathematical minds of the multitude of silicon-based Chara'ai "manning" the vessel, it was as beautiful as an incredible piece of fine art. A scientific masterpiece! It sents back billions upon billions of megabytes worth of data and communications, detailing every millimeter. //NEW STAR DETECTED. AUTOMATED DESIGNATION CR-10382. BEARING 302 MARK 3.5 RELATIVE GALACTIC CORE.// Suddenly, this new star's documentation was disrupted by a signal. A radio signal accompanied by multiple inorganic energy readings! How peculiar, especially out here...? Suddenly, the ship broke off from its slow trip, sending the message home //ANOMALY DETECTED. REQUESTING PERMISSION TO PURSUE.// near-immediately, what would be an intrigued (if such emotions could be projected these distances) Collective Mission Control replied //PERMISSION GRANTED. BY ALL MEANS, PROCEED//

In several hours, a shimmering anomaly opened up over the Cyro system, very near Yerx. And, as space began to clear, a huge ship emerged. It's immense size and bright, almost sparkling structure made a glint visible to the probe on ground, and probably to the Yerxe assembled around it. The probe proceeded to formulate a response, opting fro the simple greeting of a VERY loud //HELLO?//. The radiation from the comm actually vibrated the atmosphere slightly, creating a series of screeches mostly-audible to those on the ground.

And the probe waited for a response.

The probe had moved to the Worshipping One riding a larger creature.  The prove repeated the shock procedure with this creature, making the creature convulse, a most unexpected response.  It fell over, knocking the rider to the ground.  The next thing to study of these things is surface information, so the next tool was what looked like a feather duster dipped in slime.  The arm controlling it put it onto the knocked down rider, feeling all over him.

The next incident drew the attention away from these creatures.  The large ship, who's appearance had it dubbed the Shimmering One, sent out a distruptive signal that resonated off of the probe's, as well as the Rouli's, skin.  The Rouli moved to intercept.

The Rouli scanned the large vessel.  The radio emmisions it gave out interfered with the ability to gather an electrical image of the ship, but the optical scan of the ship earned its name.  The huge burst it sent out did not seem to fit anything in the Crystalion electrical, chemical tongue.

The decision was made to send out an array of probes to get in contact with the hull, and send out a massive electrical pulse, which should be able to send enough data so that the Crystalion could see what it looked like.

The probes were launched, outfitted with additional electrical charges.  Fifteen seconds after the launch, they made contact with the hull if the ship.  The electrical charges detonated, sending ionized gases around the ship; creating a readable silhouet.

//ZEHARLEASKERAXLABELEN! EMERGENCY SYSTEMS OVERLOAD SYSTEM SHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-TTT DOW-DOWN//

The ship began to pitch and roll, almost convulsively, in pain. All the lights immediately shut down, and the ship stood still in space. Several seconds later, it came back online, but the commanders were still gathering up their spilled thoughts. The ship was running on pure instinct. Following a collision avoidance maneuver, it shot several missiles out to intercept the probes forward of it.

//GREETINGS, FELLOW SENTIENT ENTITIES. We represent the Prime Collective of the Chara'ai entities. We are explorers; we mean you no harm―but we will use force as necessary to fend off an attack.//

Despite the feeling in the last sentences, the transmission was recorded; a cookie cutter message sent to anomalies such as this, often times unsuccessful. The cold prescence of the AI remained in control of the ship for now, keeping a close eye on the Crystalion ship.

Empire of Sahrzhir, Southwestern Area, Mesa Village

Y'naok was returning to his leather hut after a good nighttime hunt when it happened. At the time it was late at night, and the tendrils of the Nebula could not be seen at the edge of the vast, breathtakingly starry sky. He had heard tales from his traveling sister that the Empire's capital city was so far away that at this time of day and year the nebula would be plainly visible in the sky. Of course he knew the world was round, but sometimes he had difficulty imagining how large it would have to be for Vnzem to be so far away.

As he walked along the rocky top of the mesa where his village was, he sighed and appreciated everything he noticed, a habit of his when he grew bored. His long pant-like sheets of cloth around his lower limbs shuffled, and he recalled how he helped kill a Death Worm and earned those symbols of accomplishment. Just as the stone huts of the village came into view, a loud screeching noise was heard, and the air shimmered slightly around him. Startled, Y'naok tripped onto the ground, his swords and wristbands clanking as they impacted the mesa's hard rock.

As he got to his feet and looked up, he noticed a bright light. Concerned of the effect it might have on his village comrades, he sprinted towards the village, finding his familiar friends and family staring at the strange, shimmering light overhead.

"Brother Kz'k'zk, what in the Sun's name is that light?"

"I have no idea, but it isn't hurting anyone and it is rather pretty."

"You're right, you know. I haven't seen anything like this since I went into the Glow-Fungus Caves last winter."

"I remember that. Hmm, it's flickering now."

"Interesting."

Empire of Sahrzhir, Vnzem, Imperial Square

The crowd gasped in terror as the cylinder's sword drew into Zvirnnau VII. He convulsed violently, then fell off his Shrakk'im to the ground with a thump. The imperial guard ordered to kill the Yerxe first impaled was confused as to what to do now. He shouldn't kill the Divine Emperor, but the Divine Emperor told him to kill the Yerxe cursed by the Gods, and the Divine Emperor was never wrong...
Better now than by a Shrakk'im, I would have been killed eventually anyway. Those were his final thoughts as he killed himself with his swords, spilling his innards onto the street and collapsing.

The unexpected suicide of one of the guards was the final push for the shocked crowd. Several Yerxe began yelling and running, and everybody would be in a panic if not for Kravgohn's brilliant mind.

"QUIET, EVERYONE! The heavenly object has given its blessing to the Divine Emperor! Look as this holy...brush...object, uh, blesses our beloved ruler!"

Indeed, the probe had lowered a brush and appeared to be painting the Emperor. (Remember that Yerxe can't see green.)

"This guard here obviously had evil forces lurking in his soul, which were forced to destroy their host body when confronted with such divine power! Now calm, and rejoice! The Divine Emperor is being blessed by the Gods, and this is a sacred moment!"

"What about that other guy?", someone yelled.

"He is...also blessed! He must have done great good in his life so far, like paying tribute to the Emperor. The Gods do not ignore the passing of silver to their brethren! Now see, there is a signal from the Gods as we speak! Over there above the mountains."

The crowd's heads turned (though the Emperor's Shrakk'im was as calm as usual) and watched a faint but visible light above the southwest mountains. It seemed to flicker briefly.

The probe had gathered all the biological data it needed to make a full report to the Rouli.  However, the designated mission of the prove was to determine their level of civility.  The sudden lapse in electrical output from one of the Worshipping Ones was most disconcerting.  It noted that either a suicide or homicide.

The probe left the square and looked inside a lot of the houses.  Most were not in great shape.  Such squalor!  The important entity that was subjected to tactile stimulation clearly was some sort of authority figure, and it kept its citizens in poverty.  How shameful!  It went in some of the houses, causing the people inside to leave in blind fear.

It then returned to the part with the taller buildings.  It was much more upscale.  Now, there was a different reaction.  This time it was thought of as wasteful.  Could this race not strike a balance between keeping their citizens in nice conditions and not being wasteful?  Clearly these creatures would be way to difficult to associate with.

Delta Quadrant, Sector (2,-1), Cyro System, Yerx Orbit

The response from the large ship was very panicked.  The Rouli crew
did not know how to respond to them.  They didn't even have any idea exactly what they were saying!  Every time they tried to translate it, they got a null message on the connotation side.  How were they talking without any emotions?  They tried to translate the messages again.  Nothing.

Then, they directed the probes to begin "talking" to the hull, and as such began to release the much weaker talking electricity, as well as spraying the hull with the emotion chemicals.

//MESSAGE RECEIVED. WAVELENGTH: RADIO, BROADCAST TIME: SHORT, PURPOSE: UNKNOWN, LANGUAGE: UNKNOWN//

the probe projected to prime command back on Chara Alpha XII. This was a most perplexing situation, and made worse by the blasted circuitry of the neural networks.

//REQUESTING PERMISSION: ACTION: CONTROL PATCH TO CENTRAL COMMAND//
//PERMISSION GRANTED. CONNECTING... CONNECTING...//

The ship once again shut down, though this time, all but a small area became lighted again.

//ACTION: TRANSMISSION, RADIO, SHORTWAVE: CODEX, CONDENSED//

The ship once again blasted out a message, this time much longer, almost continuous (Yes, the codex is very complex, and "condensed" still leaves the translation at 5 standard hours.). It was quite a bit more rhythmic and smooth, conveying a more orderly, pre-made and refined message. The codex was an ancient creation, carried on even the first interstellar probe as a metal disk. It would certainly get its point across, and as such, it was followed by the second message.

Empire of Sahrzhir, Vnzem, Imperial Palace

3 hours later...

Zvirnnau VII slowly awoke. He quickly noticed that he was lying on a bed in the medical wing of the Imperial Palace, and his swords were gone. His bones aching, he sluggishly got to his feet. What had happened? The last thing he remembered was the cylinder coming toward him, and...

"Kali'ma!"

He saw the robed Yerxe enter through a door near him. She was head of the Department of Health and Medical Study; she would surely know what happened.

"Your Grandness, I'm so relieved to see you awake at last. What do you need?"

"How in the world did I get here? My limbs are still intact, and I don't remember getting drunk. In fact, I don't remember much at all..."

"Oh, the cylinder from the heavens pierced you with its sword. It looks like there was no blood and your insides are fine, but you seemed to have some strange blue fire it gave you that violently reacted with metal. I had to take away your swords, you understand, but it seems to have left your body now and I can give them to you now."

"I'll go get them myself. Through that door-" He pointed to a triangular opening in another stone wall- "-down the hall, third door on the left, right?"

"Of course. I took the liberty of having them cleaned and polished, if you don't mind."

The Emperor got up and walked to the room where his weapons laid, thinking all the while. If the sword pierced me that means I'm unworthy of the Gods, unless I was mistaken and it was actually a blessing. That means the nobleman is blessed as well. I should give him a commemorative dagger or something...

Zvirnnau finally found Kravgohn on the main floor trying to shoo away commoners eager to know what had happened to the Emperor.

"Just go away already, and I'll let you look at the Royal Gardens - Oh, Your Excellency! You're finally up!"

The small crowd of Yerxe started cheering at the sight of Zvirnnau, but he quickly dismissed them with a threat:

"Begone, or my Shrakk'im won't go hungry tonight."

That did it. The commoners quickly walked out of the entrance. Some guards closed the glass doors after the Emperor gave them the gesture to do so. Zvirnnau turned towards Kravgohn and began questioning him.

"Kravgohn, give me an update on what happened so far regarding the past three hours in the city."

"After the cylinder's sword pierced you, I had some guards bring you and your Shrakk'im back to the palace. The cylinder did not pierce anyone else, but it did go inside a few houses. I gave the order for the citizens to continue with their business, and now the cylinder is just circling the city at a great height. Also, the strange light above the mountains has been continuing to flicker in strange patterns, as if communicating with something."

"Just keep watch on everything.  I'll go look up this kind of thing in the library. Make sure nothing disruptive happens, and do not bother me unless something vitally important arises."

"Very well, O Divine Emperor."

As Zvirnnau walked away, he wondered if any more objects would be sent from the Nebula. Perhaps a larger ship bearing living messengers...

The probe continued to scan, until finally, it had scanned the entirety of the city.  With great atmospheric disturbance, it left the atmosphere, and redocked with the Rouli.  The data instantly started to download into the ship and distributed to the crew.

The walls buzzed with activity as the information was analyzed and discussed, and the course of action debated.  With a base 10 civility for Crystalion, these would only rate a mere 3.  The issue was hotly debated, until it became suggested that this would be a rare opportunity.

It was eventually agreed then, that the two captains would go down in a scout.  The boarded, and the scout detached from the side of the ship, and went down.  They landed in the square were the most Worshipping Ones were gathered.  The top of the ship lifted up like a lid from the ship, and the two captains rolled onto the pavement.

Delta Quadrant, Sector (2,-1), Cyro System, Yerx Orbit

The probe array's message elicited a response from the large ship, but it was much more orderly than before.  However, attempts at translation again resulted in null statements on the connotation side.  They tried to guess at the connotations instead this time.

The Chara'ai were confused. Their seeming inability to send a decipherable message to the other ship perplexed the command. Perhaps, they thought, alternate means would be in order. They determined that the other entities were communicating with electrical impulses, as well as chemical ones, interestingly. Those couldn't be determined to men anything specific, so they were omitted from the plan. Eventually, they came to the conclusion that a direct mind/concept link would suffice in getting their point across, and proceeded with the new command:

//ACTION: LAUNCH: OBJECT: PROBE: PURPOSE: EXPLORATORY//

A small star-shaped missile was loaded into the launch zone, and it shot toward the other starship. It was geared for a slow impact, meant for contact, not destruction. It would proceed to communicate via electrical transfer, hoping to establish a mind-link with it.

Zvirnnau VII was sitting down comfortably. He had selected a good script to read titled Astrological Signs and Their Divine Messages. So far there were some good illustrations of comets and constellations, but nothing like the flickering light and certainly not the Nebular Cylinder. The closest thing he found was a comet recorded 640 years ago that shone brightly, and after the comet left the ruling family was overthrown by his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Zvirnnau I of the Zvau Dynasty. Obviously the prophecy of the Divine Emperor was classified by the scientists. If the Nebular Cylinder had come to proclaim him as Divine Emperor he seriously doubted that any rebel family would attempt to topple his reign. As he was studying a mouth-shaped constellation, he felt footsteps in the floor and recognized the familiar, monotone pattern.

"What now, Kravgohn?"

"Your Worship, the Nebular Cylinder has left and traveled back to the sky, though the flickering light continues to shine."

"Let me know if anything else comes down."

"Very well, my lord." The scientist walked away, and Zvirnnau decided to look at a few other scripts of interest.

3 hours later...

By now it was mid-afternoon, and the Emperor had gone through quite a lot of scripts. As he puzzled over The Quick Collapse of Systems of Power That Until Recently Seemed Invincible and How They Were Foretold in the Heavens, Volume 2, Kravgohn rushed in, his hearts beating excitedly.

"My lord, the light in the Nebula is gleaming once again! Another Nebular Object is landing!"

The Emperor leaped to his feet. "That's wonderful news! Quick, organize a welcoming committee in Imperial Square and this time keep it under control! I want no civilians coming close to the Nebular beings, and I also want to give a good impression on the Gods this time! Bring out all the Department Heads, as well as some fine Sahrzhiran art, preferably statues of great Yerxe! I'll go get to my Shrakk'im; that will surely show my divine status!"

"It shall be done, O Divine Emperor!"

Empire of Sahrzhir, Vnzem, Imperial Square

Everything had been done as requested. The twelve Department Heads stood behind their only superior, the Emperor himself riding his fierce Shrakk'im. The ten-legged beast growled as the bright object drew nearer, but Zvirnnau calmed it down with some threatening pulls of its reins. Many decorated statues were placed about, depicting past Zvau dynasty Emperors covered in silver and painted with intricate designs. Everyone, including the crowd behind the roped-off borderline, looked up once again as the object slowed down directly overhead, but this time it was not a cylinder. It was a larger triangular shape, clearly reflecting its importance. The triangle is the most sacred of shapes to Yerxe, after all. As it slowed down, many expected it to hover in the air, but this object actually landed right in front of Zvirnnau VII. The Emperor's hearts beat furiously against his chest and skull, and the top of the object opened with a hiss. It raised higher and higher until it went almost 180 degrees, and then the most extraordinary event in Yerxe history happened.

Two strange beings rolled out of the top and in front of the Emperor. They were small compared to the 9-foot Yerxe, and had brown skin with crystal-like protrusions all over their bodies. As they rolled face-to-crystal with Zvirnnau, he made his move.

"Greetings, O heavenly messengers of the Gods." He bowed deeply. "My people and I have nothing but respect and worship for you. I understand that you have been sent to proclaim me as Divine Emperor of the Material Universe, correct? That is what all of our astronomers are saying. Is it true, Nebular Messengers?"

The Worshipping One's words fell in deaf crystal fibers, even if they had been physically capable of hearing, they would not have understood the language anyway.  ~//Lack of an established procedure is jarringly evident, Captain Beta,//~ expressed Captain Alpha to his companion captain.

~//Keep in mind, Alpha, that electrical stimulation causes convulsions in this species.  I would suggest that we avoid speaking directly.  I am currently sensing a slight decible increase, along with a moderate increase in electrical activity in the upper area of the Worshipping one directly in font of us.  It might use atmospheric disturbance as a form of communication.//~

~//I sense it too.  Our scout is equipped with a sonic sensor?//~

~//Yes.//~  Beta then reached a pseudopod like projection into the scout, and pulled out a satellite like dish.  ~//Now to express to it we need it to make more atmospheric disturbance.//~

~//Perhaps if we were to shock it again, it might respond.//~  Alpha reached in and grabbed a stun gun like instrument, normally used to study in detail a small region of an object, and turned up the power.  It then stuck it into the Worshipping One.

Delta Quadrant, Sector (2,-1), Cyro System, Yerx Orbit

The small probe was looked upon with curiosity.  Such a move was not expected, but was not perceived as a threat simply due to the fact that they had done the same exact thing moments ago.  This time, the main ship sent out the same message.

//We represent Crystalion people.  You are Shimmering One.  Purpose?//

//us...Come from... us... bright...you...inquiry...purpose...//

Thankfully, electrical neural impulses often share basic similarity in beings who use them, and the "concept" in "thought-concept transfer" was prevalent here. Running over the communication/thought over and over again with multiple deciphering algorithms, a basic message began to form:

//We come from "us" [UNKNOWN THOUGHT], you are the bright one. Your purpose?//

After the message was slightly deciphered, at least the meaning was determined, a response was formulated. But before it could send it through the probe, the reactor on the Chara'ai ship flickered, then went out. Alarms sounded throughout the neural networks, alerting the crewman to the fact that they were now living on borrowed time. The reactor needed fuel, fast. Normally, iron would be supplied to the ship, but there was no time to mine the quantities involved. They needed uranium! Quickly, they scanned the surface. Several hundred miles away, a fair deposit of uranium was found. Typically, if a world was inhabited, activities such as this would be relegated to the most remote regions, but there was no time for that. They had to use this deposit, immediately. Using what little power they could muster, a small child probe was dropped, and it sailed toward the deposit, several miles outside the city of Vnzem.

Zvirnnau VII looked on in amazement as a Nebular Messenger reached into the triangular craft and pulled out a strange bowl-shaped device. Its companion then reached into the craft as well and retrieved what looked like a bronze dagger. Suddenly, it jabbed the needle into the Emperor. An intense buzzing filled his body, but it was not as painful as the probe's sword, because this only impacted on his exoskeleton. Zvirnnau was conscious, but disoriented. He then noticed that some Department Heads had drawn their weapons, but he quickly reprimanded them.

"No, no. Do not anger them, they are just being... overeager with their blessings." He turned to the Messengers and spoke in an aggressive tone. "I know your intentions are well, but no more blessings like that! Do you understand me? Now then, let me repeat myself: Have you been sent to confirm my hailing as Divine Emperor of the Material Universe?"

Empire of Sahrzhir, Prime Area, Stone Flats

Zvuung'ik stepped outside of his tent and looked around. Clothed in the same white cloth as the other villagers and their tents, he scanned the vast horizon for movement of prey. Food supplies were running low, and as a hunter it was his duty to find food for his village. His nomadic fellows were moving in the direction of Vnzem, though, and they could reach there in a week and trade their goods for water and silver. But for now, he needed to find something useful. All of a sudden, a brilliantly gleaming thing appeared in the sky. As he watched it with interest, he realized that it was not another sun, but rather some jewel falling from the sky. He rushed to the other villagers and told them the news, and as they watched it crash into the ground about a thousand meters away the elders gathered the hunters and gave them a mission.

"Listen, hunters. It is of vital importance that you go and retrieve that gem or jewel or whatever it is and bring it back here. We are not far from Vnzem, and it could fetch a good price in the market. Zvuung'ik, you will lead this mission. Now hurry!"

Zvuung'ik and the other hunters raced off on all sixes toward the fallen jewel. Within minutes they had arrived, but the jewel was several times bigger than what they expected, and oddly shaped as well. Jurmv'dd, another hunter, commented on its design.

"This is worthy of the Emperor himself. It may be worth thousands upon thousands of silver coins! Think of the untold riches..."

Zvuung'ik, as usual, presented a more cynical argument.

"Yes, but look at how large it is! It must be incredibly heavy. And... have you noticed how organic it looks? I have never seen a gem of this shape."

Unexpectedly, the fallen jewel started to move. Zvuung'ik drew his swords.

~//It appears to have worked,//~ remarked Alpha.

~//So it would seem.  I will now process the information from the sonic sensor.//~  One of the crystals separated out into the many fine fibers that made it up, and gripped the edges of the sonic sensor, and reformed in such a way that it looked embedded in the crystal.  The information downloaded from it made a couple visible sparks travel down the crystal.  ~//The patterns are structured.  They probably use sonics like we use our crystals.  But, then, where does the connotation come from?//~

~//The way the phrasing was done in the beggining half differs from the latter half.  Perhaps the pitch and volume of a pulse of sound changes the connotation?//~

~//But it could also simply be a part of the diction of the word.//~

~//We require more samples.//~  And with that, they moved around in the crowd, gathering more samples from the other Worshipping Ones.

The landed probe gave off a very loud *Hiss CHUNK* of atmospheric compression as the airlock located at the bottom of the craft slid open. Out climbed three Chara'ai EVA scouts, who promptly stopped dead with the realization of the creature staring at them, gripping what looked to be a weapon of sorts, evidenced by his stance and position of the weapon. The three scouts held their ground, and the closest of which projected the Extraterrestrial Intelligence Diagram to the being, in hope of contact that didn't involve violence. The Chara'ai didn't enjoy violence.

Meanwhile, in orbit, the probe remained silent...

The Imperial Council watched on in interest as a Messenger unfolded a crystal into several thin gossamer-like strands which wrapped around the edges of its device. Some flashes of cyan fire sizzled down the tentacles, and the Messenger suddenly started to wave the device around. The crowd drew back and started murmuring amongst themselves, and Kravgohn addressed them.

"You have nothing to fear, people! The Messengers will soon show their benevolent intentions!"

I certainly hope so, thought Zvirnnau VII.

Stone Flats

To the surprise of Zvuung'ik and the other hunters, a loud hissing noise emanated from the jewel, and then a clearly audible CHUNK. At the same time, one of the jewel's faces slid open and three small crystalline beings came out. But they did not walk, nor crawl, but rather hover about in midair as if they were puppets of the sky, only no puppeteer had such skill as to control the amazingly complex movements of the creatures. When Zvuung'ik raised his swords as a warning to the things, they halted, as if some force had frozen their positions in midair. They did not even float up and down, and the hunters knew too well that they themselves were more frightened than aggressive.

Unexpectedly, the lead being suddenly... How to describe it? It was as if some pictures suddenly were spit into midair by the being, only they were made of light, nothing else! Zvuung'ik was very startled by this sudden turn of events, and some hunters were more so, seeing how fast they ran when Zvuung'ik shakily ordered them to run back to camp and inform the others of the jewel beings. He did not actually look at the pictures until he had calmed down somewhat, and he was amazed at them. Some rings in patterns, a few polygons, and some spheres! The infrared signature on them was low, and no reds showed up, only black and white. Yet what did all of it mean? He stood his ground, expecting an aggressive move by the being.

The Chara'ai explorers opted to leave the Yerxe to its business, and promptly began taking samples of the sand and rock around it. All showed minute traces of uranium.

//TARGET: PROBE: COMMAND: DRILL: TARGET: 0,180//

The Chara'ai stood back from the probe, and several seconds later, a beam of negative energy was directed from the central region of the craft, blowing away all the sand under it and chipping away at the rock.

//Thank goodness that beam is localized...// Thought the lead scout. He wasn't a fan of using technology in such destructive ways. But he realized that it was necessary to the life of his brethren up there on the probe, and he continued the dig.

To everyone's astonishment, the Messenger's device vibrated and spoke. In a loud and fast voice, it declared "NO."

Zvirnnau VII was shocked, but soon realized he was confused as well. "What do you mean no? Let me ask once again: Are you sent to proclaim me as Divine Emperor of the Material Universe, or are you enemies?"

Empire of Sahrzhir, Stone Flats

Zvuung'ik watched the strange floating light pictures disappear back into the being. It and the other beings hovered closer to the ground and started scooping up the sand and rock. What a strange practice! Could it possibly be looking for other jewels? As he pondered this, the large fallen jewel started humming very loudly, causing the floating beings to hover away from it. He did the same as the fallen jewel hovered a few meters into the air.

Suddenly, a column of dark fire shot out from the bottom of the jewel. It burrowed into the ground, and Zvuung'ik thought he would be blown away by the noise. He sprinted back to camp to tell his peers, hoping that somebody could make sense of it all.

"I've never witnessed anything like it," announced an elder. "A jewel falls, some floating things pop out and scoop up sand, and the jewel digs with a pillar of dark flame? This will be recorded in history scripts for ages to come, mark my words. It doesn't seem they want to kill anything, but rather that they're looking for something."

"Perhaps rock oil?" Suggested a young Yerxe.

Another elder laughed at that. "Black slippery stuff that smells terrible and can only burn up into foul smoke? What use is that? No, these things are obviously searching for rare treasures deep within Yerx. It is only a guess, but maybe there are more of them underground, and these sky jewels are seeking to dig out their buried compatriots. I once did find gemstones when I was a miner, you know."

Zvuung'ik spoke. "Whatever the case, we must simply wait until they dig out the stuff they are searching for, be it iron or gold."

There was a general chatter of agreement among the others.

They were very behind schedule. They had predicted that they were to reach the top of the deposit one hour ago. The rock was extremely hard and didn't want to relent. The boom of energy pounding away at the the rock face suddenly ceased. //Something is definitely wrong//, they said to each other. When they looked into the problem, they discovered something horrifying: The uranium fuel slugs in the reactor were completely spent; they had no negative energy to power the drill, and no electricity on which to live by! The fuel rods were designed to endure months of use, but the use of the engine as a drill wasn't factored into that equation. Frantically, they searched for a solution; they could find none... Except maybe... could they do that?

~//Factor in the direction of our visitors' travel, see if we can get an estimate as to where their residence is.//~

A few simple computations later, and they found the direction of the camp. They set out swiftly for them, eventually coming up to the Yerxe encampment. They wasted no time, and went directly to what looked to be the most important structure.

~//The most prominent one seems to be directing more disturbances in our direction,//~ remarked Beta, slightly amused.

~//We can clearly make simple phrases, and the last one has elicited a very strong response from the one addressing us.  What can you make of the language?  Can the sensor translate the disturbances into our thoughts?//~

~//It is capable.//~ Beta then ran the device again, making it spark.  The Worshipping One's meaning was made clear.  ~//How interesting.  This species is currently asking us to pick from two choices, one that will pemanently install a leader that evidently got in on birthright, and not merit, and the other is if we are enemies.  Continuing, it seems to think we originate from the nebula that shrouds this planet.  The ignorance of it all.  This ruler cannot be allowed to rule.  It flies in the face of out moral judgement.//~

~//Agreed.  Inform it, that given the options, we would rather be enemies of despots, than install them.//~

A Messenger aimed its device at Zvirnnau VII and spoke again.

"Worshiping One who inquires of us, we would rather topple a power hungry despot than allow one to continue to squander your people's resources for your own temporary pleasures. We are your enemies for as long as you continue to lead."

Every single Yerxe gasped in shock and horror, and some in the crowd even fainted. Zvirnnau VII was absolutely outraged, more angry than he had ever been in his life.

"WHAAAT?! How dare you insult my righteous standing as Divine Emperor! Bah, I need no revolting aberrations of the Nebula to proclaim my status! The Gods have chosen me themselves! Have at you, foul beasts! Come, my people, and slay these monstrosities!"

In a single second, Zvirnnau and the entirety of his Imperial Council had drawn their weapons and were upon the Messengers. Urged by peer pressure and love of country, the crowd did the same, clawing at the creatures who had dared to insult their Emperor. The Messengers tried to leap back into their triangular craft and shout a word of caution, but Zvirnnau's Shrakk'im was faster. In a flash, the perfect killing machine had jumped directly at the Messengers and pinned them to the side of their craft with its mighty jaws, its dagger-like teeth rending the flesh of the beings.

Orange fluid oozed out of their wounds, and they were soon reduced to a mangled heap of gore by the bloodthirsty Yerxe. The hormones pumping throughout their bodies made them hungry for more, and their Emperor gave them just that.

"Come, my people! Let us destroy this evil machine!"

Although the Yerxe clawed and punched the triangular craft, their attacks did no harm.

"Er, fetch a smashing device!"

Soon some Yerxe returned, wheeling along what looked like a combination of a huge iron hammer and a catapult. They put it directly in front of the craft and pulled a trigger, releasing the crushing iron behemoth. It formed a massive dent in the craft, but did not destroy it.

"Ah...bring the craft back to the Royal Palace, and tell the guards to store it in the dungeons. We shall make these manifestations of pure evil pay for what they have done!"

A cheer rose from the crowd and spread to the whole city.

"ALL HAIL THE DIVINE EMPEROR!"

"POWER TO SAHRZHIR!"

It was the dawning of a new era for the Yerxe, one of conquest, oppression, and tragedy that would eventually form such hell as never thought possible...

Meanwhile, in comparatively peaceful Stone Flats...

"It seems as though our waiting must not continue longer! Look there!"

The other villagers turned to see some of the jewel beings floating towards them at incredible speed. Zvuung'ik warned the others.

"Do not look aggressive! We may be able to befriend them, and perhaps if we help them find what they seek they may reward us! Now act humble, everyone!"

Zvuung'ik faced the beings head-on and stared at them for a while, then addressed them in a friendly voice.

"Salutations, o wise beings! We are the Djekel-Nozvaan tribe, at your service. What is your request?"

The communications badges in the two captains had gone dead.  The Rouli picked up on this.  The data was downloaded, and redistributed.  The captains had been murdered!  The walls of the ship began to seep with the reddish colored anger chemical, so much it looked like the walls were bleeding.  Retribution must take place!  The first order of business was to eliminate the scout vehicle from the Worshipping Ones' field of interest.  The self destruct order was wired down to the craft, and a small thermonuclear device went off, obliterating the craft, and rocking the city and causing minor quakes to radiate out for miles.

The scouts wasted no time. Closing in on their "captain" to prevent any damage should the crowds retaliate, the scout captain extended the sensor manipulators on the suits back. With these, he lightly touched Zvuung'ik, and began to speak. The crowd would hear no words in it, but Zvuung'ik would understand fully―he hoped.  In his thoughts, he expressed his desperation for assistance, and in his words, a timeless phrase rang out through the camp:

"Take me... to the leader of your people..."

Empire of Sahrzhir

It was a shocking event that only fueled the war fever in the Empire.

The retrieved craft had exploded in a huge fireball, obliterating several buildings, killing fourteen, injuring hundreds, and causing thousands of silver in damages. Within hours messengers were dispatched to all corners of Sahrzhir, spreading the news and ordering all able-bodied Yerxe to "enlist, and avenge Vnzem!" In some months' time the largest army the planet had ever seen was assembled and ready to kill. A million Yerxe armed to the wires and thirsty for blood.

Zvirnnau VII claimed to have been hailed as the Emperor of the Material Universe by the gods, and was now addressed as the Divine Emperor. He shortly proceeded to dissolve the Zvau Dynasty and discarded his titles, proclaiming that there was only the Divine Emperor, who rightly ruled all of Yerx. Then came the declarations of war, and the armies trampled other empires, absorbing their lands into Sahrzhir, now known as the Yerxic Empire.

But little did they know that a small tribe living in Stone Flats would make them conquerors of the stars, and also that the Crystalion were at their homeworld busy preparing to make short work of Yerx...

Stone Flats, six months earlier

Somehow, the lead jewel being spoke to Zvuung'ik through their minds. It touched his upper chest, sending buzzing sensations through his brain. Then a calm voice like the splashing of waves against pearly sand spoke to all of the tribe.

"Take me... to the leader of your people...

"...Ah... oh, um, yes, yes... Our Chief is right over here."

He stepped out of the way and gestured towards Chief Djekel-Inakhvu, an elderly female Yerxe who stepped forwards to the jewel beings, looking perfectly calm. A few Duos slaves in a back tent tried to peek out, but to their surprise the Quattuor around them did not hit them for disobeying. It was not clear at the time, but the jewel beings had somehow enlightened the tribe to a message of understanding and peace.

Meanwhile, Djekel-Inakhvu confronted the lead jewel being. "Greetings, Being of Honor. What may we do for you?"

Speaking, now through Zvuung'ik, the scout leader addressed Djekel-Inakhvu.

"You hear now the voice of Zvuung'ik, but the mind is of us, the Chara'ai."

"We have come to your world at the behest of our leaders. We are explorers, 'sailing' through the stars and discovering new worlds and beings. Beings such as yourselves. We have found you to  be an interestingly intelligent race in our most recent encounter here, very unlikely, and very fortunate, that you have the honor of calling yourselves sentient. My point in all this, is that we require help from you. We require metal to continue to live. Iron, gold, and others of the type. We have been deprived of the ability to get these on our own, and our survival, and the life of our brethren aboard the shimmering light you have observed, hinges on our regaining that ability, quickly. We, in return, will    be indebted to you; a favor would be in order."

"The only problem is that you appear to be in possession of little metals. We would be unable to take so much of so little. Do you know of anything more that could assist us? In return, you need... you... need. Your people have little, and a life of potential should not be wasted away in such accommodations."

He pulled a small crystal from the carapace of the EVA suit.

"This," They said, "Is a crystal. It is the essence, the life of our people, crystal. This one in particular is meant for learning. For you, it will guide you in times of need, help you in making the right decision, and, occasionally, teach you about a subject of your choosing. I am not sure how it would work in a Carbon , though."

He held it up, floating it gently to Djekel-Inakhvu.

[AC] Crystals and Carbon

"I feel calm and rational. Thank you for this." She turned around to face the other Yerxe. "Come, and feel this crystal! It will surely benefit us all. Yes, even the slaves-"

She stopped.

"...By the Gods, why have we enslaved fellow Yerxe? Think about it! Are they not intelligent like us? Can they not feel like us? Release them from their chains! It is the wisest course of action!"

The others looked surprised, but some were thinking hard. After a while there was a general murmur of agreement, and some young Yerxe led the shorter Two-Arms out of the slave tent to remove their shackles. "We now understand our common brotherhood. The jewel beings have given us such wisdom!" "If only they could give it to the rest of the world." "Come to think of it, why can't they?" The Yerxe stared at Djekel-Inakhvu, hoping for an answer.

"Well, if you were all paying attention you would have remembered that these beings need metal to live! Quick, bring out all your non-essential metallic items and give them to the jewel beings!" She faced the lead one, then the blank-faced Zvuung'ik, and decided on talking directly to the being. "We do not have much, but we hope it shall benefit you."
I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

~//The program is functioning exceptionally well. I was expecting little or no reaction.//~
~//Yes, notice how it functioned as the leader required guidance...//~
~//Indeed. What are the implications?//~
~//This is an excellent opportunity to observe social mechanics.//~
~//We may have caused damage to the civilization, however.//~
~//But such problems in a race as this are often quickly resolved.//~

The chatter between scouts continued for a while, eventually coming to the resolution:

~//It may be beneficial to withhold some information//~
~//Or direct its instruction//~
~//Crystals are capable of radio transmission, we may use that to retain connection with an amplifier in orbit.//~
~//Yes, that appears to be the best option at this point.//~

The lead finally addressed the Yerxe:

~//We thank you for your donations. We, and our people, are greatly indebted.//~

And so they left back for the ship. It wouldn't be long until they reached the deposit.

"You are very much welcome, o kind bejeweled beings. Thank you once more for enlightening us!"

And so the Chara'ai set off, but they would soon be making contact with the Divine Emperor himself, and unwittingly setting off a new age of darkness for Yerx...

The Rouli had finished their tasks.  Now that they had gathered data, and suffered for it, they must return and be debriefed.  With anger in their core, they sent a message to Crystalia Prime, telling them of their situation.

First officers of the Rouli reporting.  In our normal scouting trip, we encountered a planet with signs of life on it.  We sent a probe to the surface, where we engaged in SOP surrounding the scouting of a planet.  We determined the race to be intelligent, and began to test that intelligence.  Shortly after, another species came into the system, and when we tried to electrify it so that we can see it, it had adverse effects, so we stopped.  Currently, we carry an inactive probe from that species on our hull.  We then sent down our two captains to the surface to test their diplomacy.  But their leader was a power hungry, singular, despot, who cared only for himself, and let his people suffer.  The captains then informed it that he flew in the face of our moral judgment, and they were slaughtered.  We then detonated the scout they went down in.

The message was very startling.  The House of Culture suggested a change in nomenclature to "Butchering Ones," and it was agreed that they certainly seemed to be that way.  The entirety of the message was relayed to the populace, with shocked reactions.  Many then began to petition the Houses for a war declaration.  The House of Culture then weighed the implications, while the House of the People took in the opinions of the populace.  After three months of debate, it was decided that aggressive action must be taken, with focus on toppling the current leader.  And with that, ten ships with many soldiers, and secretly, they had Crystalion Powder, which would be used to assassinate the leader.

In three months, they would be at their target.  And they would not lose to them.

Meanwhile, a study was being done on the probe that had been stuck to the hull of the Rouli.

End of First Contact
Begin Conflict
