Crystalion

Biology
Flesh
The Crystalion is an unusual creature, around 1.5 m tall.  Its body is highly generalized.  There are three basic layers to the “flesh” of this being
1.The outer layer is somewhat tough.  It is extremely sticky, which serves both the purpose of holding it together, as well as ensnaring food, ranging from minute particles to medium sized creatures.  It protects the creature from moisture, and gathers oxygen for the next layer.
   2. The next layer is where the nutrient storing cells are located.  However, this creature acts like a poriferan, with the second layer cells acting similar to amoebocytes.  They deliver the food and oxygen throughout the body, and also act to break down food.
3.The third layer cells are pretty much like a liver in a human.  They do a lot of tasks that are applicable to them, like filtering out toxins from the amoebocytes.  They also store fats, and it also behaves like a muscle.  By that, I mean it interacts with the crystal like structures.  The very center also acts like a center of memory along the crystals.

Crystals
The crystals:  These are very special.  On the outside, they appear like large crystals, but in reality, they are clumps of electromagnetic fibers.  They behave like the nerves of the Crystalion, sensing touch, electromagnetic fields, basic light/dark seeing, some sound (it makes the clump vibrate), and chemicals.  They also can contract, which allows the Crystalion to move.  However, it couldn't move very fast.  The crystal fibers can also un-clump and retract back into the body mass, or can re-clump and push out of the body in order to gather better senses in that direction.

Reproduction
Reproduction is a complex matter.  To make a new Crystalion two crystal protrusions fuse.  The first layer from both Crystalion creep over them, and then mix.  The first layer cells then undergo mass meiosis, which then exchange genetic information.  The mixed crystal and flesh then breaks off.  The cells, which is made up of many different combinations of DNA, then try to eat each other.  In the end, the three-seven most dominant genetic codes then “claim” bits of crystal.  They then pull apart from each other.

Communication
The Crystalion do not communicate with sound, since they cannot produce it, even though they can hear a little bit.  Instead, they use a combination of chemicals produced by the first layer, and electric signals from the crystal fibers.  They have nine different chemicals, which can be in any combination, and can have a wide variation of voltages, amplitudes, frequencies, etc. which allow for whole ideas to be compressed into a single chemical/electrical burst, and as such, can communicate quickly, however, close proximity is required.  The chemicals have basic emotions attached to them, the first three are happy, the next three anger, and the last three sad.  The middle ones (2, 5, 8 ) are pure emotions, while the ones on the ends of the three ranges are combinations, with whatever range they happen to be in being the dominant one. [(123)(456)(789)(123)]

Solar System

The name of the Crystalion system is 1,3 Q,LR,HF-L,HF,HF.  It is seemingly gibberish, but it's really quite simple.  Chemicals 1 and 3, quick pulse of low frequency rising, with high amplitude lowering, and then a long pulse with high falling frequency and high falling amplitude.  For simple folk, it's Crystalia.  It is a binary star system, with a red giant, named the Greater, and a red dwarf, named the Lesser.  Early in the systems development, the red dwarf's system was moving towards the red giants, and the have been caught around each other ever since.  There are a few, small, constantly molten planets near the two suns.  Their names, when translated from their language, are the Three Angry Ones, in reference to their high heat.  However, they were not know until recently, since the Crystalion can't see!   The next one is the Strong One.  It has lots of iron on its surface, causing it to appear rusty, while it also has dark places where there is a lot of obsidian.  Then we have Crystalia Prime, with a moon the Penitent One.  There is a gas giant, called the Hungry One, because it eats passing asteroids, comets, and meteors.

Crystalia Prime

Crystalia Prime is a somewhat rocky planet, with infrequent rainfall.  The days are hot, and the evenings and nights cooler.  Most of the water is held in massive water tables beneath the planets surface.  Most of the planet had karst topography.  There are extensive cavern systems within the water tables that house a unique variety of lifeforms.  A lot of lifeforms are amorphous like the Crystalion, while some are closer to having more distinct tissues, like jellyfish.  More to come on this issue later.  There are plants, which live mostly above ground, most are non-vascular, and nothing much larger than the Crystalion.  Again, more to come at a later time.  In the planets past, there were shallow oceans, which you can see by the intricate carving of the surface, but for reasons unknown to Crystalion scientists, they eventually migrated to beneath the surface, where most of the water is in the extensive cave system.  Fortunately, there was plenty of life on the land to allow for recovery, and most of the microbes followed the sea into the ground.  The rings are the result of the collision of two small moons.

Very interesting. It also seems those crystals can act as a skeletal system if they evolve into a more mobile form.

Ahh.  Are you going to be making an AC creature?

I suppose in a million years or so.

Dunno yet. Still have plans on my Sombreron. I want to give them a finale, but I want them to go out with a bang.

How about instead of talking about Gec's stuff, we restrain the topic to being about my creature.  :-\

I find this creature wonderfully well-done. And yet... I can't help but nitpick some of the more obvious things.

1. A red giant is one of the last stages in a Main Sequence star's life, and it only lasts for a few million years before dying. However, I just assume that the Greater was a Main Sequence until recently. And don't worry, when a red giant formed from a star less than 5 times the Sun's mass dies, its outer layers drift away, leaving behind a white dwarf. It won't explode.

2. You said that these guys were done with evolution, but that is incorrect. Evolution never stops, as creatures keep adapting to their changing environment. Some people say that humans themselves are actually evolving faster than ever now. However, a creature like an octopus may evolve very slowly because of its slowly changing environment.

Other than that I love it, especially the picture of Crystalia Prime. I'm looking forwards to more!

1.  I know.  The Crystalion either don't know or care.
2.  Sorry, that was just a misconception on my part.  I guess what I mean is that crystal fibers->bone won't be happening.

I've actually had these since sixth grade, if you can believe it.

I feel I should explain the screen in the first picture.  It is like our TV screen, except using electricity, chemicals, and LOUD sounds.

Those two facts are interesting. I often think about a TV for species with different means of communication. Would an elephant TV have big hammers that strike the ground?

Ships and Ship Operations

Like the Crystalion themselves, their ships are highly generalized.  The skin of the ship is warped and wrinkly.  Then, on the outside part where radiation and such is most likely to affect them, is machinery stuff such as engines, power generation, life support, sensors, and the storage of various things such as tools.  On the next part is where all of this is controlled with various engineering decks.  The next, which makes up the bulk of the ship, is quartering for the Crystalion that live, work and serve on the ship.  Then, the center most part is the command center.

The inside has very little decoration, as the Crystalion are nearly blind.  The decks are bare, the ceilings are very low, and the hallways narrow, where the Crystalion can simply ooze through them.  The walls can carry electric current very easily, and have little tunnels where communication chemicals can flow through, as well as sprayers.  That way, messages can be carried long distance through the ship, since everyone would be in contact with the walls.  For somewhat larger rooms, there are rods which come down and poke the people inside.   Private calls are done by badges worn somewhere on the outside, where it will release the appropriate chemicals and electricity.

The command structure is easy.  2 captains, 3 first officers, 7 second officers, 13 third officers, and a varied number of lieutenant equivalents and ensign equivalents (names are in Crystalion, so it would be worthless to transcribe them).  The two captains co-run the ship, while the officers share in each others duties.  Disagreements can rise, but due to the rapid nature of Crystalion communication, they are solved hundreds of times faster than a human conversation could ever.

It varies.  However, they all follow the same pattern, more or less.  I will make more types though (probes, stealth, battle(notice how this has no weapons)).  The one to find the Yerxe will probably be about Enterprise size (original series).

Sounds cool. The Yerxe have a more edged, geometric design to their architecture, specifically triangles and pyramids. A Yerxe ship would probably be something like a pyramid with huge lasers on each point. Say, what kinds of weapons do the Crystalion have, anyway? Lasers? Plasma? Particle beams?

I haven't given it much thought.  I always felt that a weapons style is indicative of the races personality.  Atom Breakers which rain down righteous judgment for the Vykusi, and the timid Milika with their vast ships and exellent shields.  I'm thinking these guys will probably be more militant, utilitarian, hedonistic, and cerebral.  So I will think on what way the weapons would work.

Small Ships
Probe

The probe is a small, torpedo shaped version of the main ship type.  Most of the outer mechanical part is made up of sensors for gathering data ranging from star data, to planetary surveys, to reconnaissance.  They have a small power source for either a one way trip or a two way trip.  One way trip type probes have a large computer on the inside that records the necessary data and sends it back to Crystalia Prime.  Two way trip type probes are older, and were used to test the effects of space travel on living tissue.  They are empty on the inside, and can fit a single occupant.  They also are used to shuttle single occupants between ships on occasion.  Probes can be refitted with explosives to make a weapon is necessary.

Scout

The scout is a much larger, triangular version of the probe.  It has enough room to comfortably fit two-three occupants.  These are used much more frequently to shuttle people between ships.  These were the first ships to leave the bounds of Crystalia.  They have discovered a couple neighboring systems, some are habitable, but colonization has not even been considered yet.  They are much faster than a probe.

Death

When a Crystalion dies, they sort of "deflate".  They turn into a puddle of cells, and the crystal fibers twist and fray.

Why are you posting such graphic images of death? Really, if a young Crystalion saw that, they'd cry. (Or whatever their equivalent is.)

In all seriousness, that's a nice description. It gives me a good idea of what a plague or something would look like.

Click for full size.

A sunrise on Crystalia Prime, the lesser having risen slightly before the greater.  You can see the dark red skies up at the top, with the light of the two stars illuminating the lower part.  The light illuminates the green algae that clings to the surface of the planet, along with the bare rock face.  Sunrises are one of the few times a Crystalion can see, as in light for real, anything aesthetically.  If anything was deserving of worship by a Crystalion, these would be one of them.  Chemicals 1 and 9 are used for a sunrises connotation.

Weapons
wip

Crystalion Powder

Here it is, seems innocuous enough.  A purplish, slightly chalky rock with a low hardness.  In actuality, it is deadly.  It is a type of explosive that will only go off once inside a living cell.  This is very bed for a Crystalion, since because they are sticky, it is impossible to get off, and because only a very small amount can mortally wound a person.  The initial wounding takes a matter of seconds, a blackening and bubbling at where the material made contact.  It explodes upon interaction with the amino acid Arginine.  This obviously generates heat, damaging the cell even further, rupturing it.  Any leftover chemical can get at more cells.  It is a relatively old chemical, but was not put into use as a weapon until recently as a way of dealing with pest infestations.  The most common method of deployment is to have a canister that sprays out the powder.  A more person-to-person type deployment is to have sword with the edge being made of the compound.  A more clandestine way would be to spike someones food with it.

Station

This is a standard space dock.  It is disc shaped, and has four hollows in it for the ships to dock in.  The inside is mostly hollow, and it is immobile.  Once docked, there are many scouts and other land able crafts to transport people back and forth from the surface.

Detailed, and it makes sense. I like it. It sort of reminds me of the Iranian system of government, except much less complicated. Also with a dash of American government as well.

I like it. It took me a few times to get it, but it's a nice system.

Where would you feel more explaination is necessary?  Or is it the flow chart I provided?

And UFO, where and how exactly is it like Iran?  I'm afraid I don't knowmuch about their government.

The chart with the wires was slightly confusing at first glance. Maybe arrows pointing to what controls what would help too. (common sense dictates that the people don't control judges and so on, but they might have a different sense of common sense, so I'm just making sure.)

Oh, it's just the whole connected-to-everything feel. Here:

Does it make any sense to you? Yeah, me neither.

Hmm... Actually it does.

Though, for some reason, I'm kinda nervous about the connection between the "Supreme Leader" and the "Guardian Council".

Bringing these back, and into the RG.  Anything specific that people would like to see?

Warships.

Also, how are they towards the galaxy's many factions? A brief list, perhaps?  :)
