How to start my own message board
« on: May 01, 2007, 07:00:08 pm »
Since this is a gaming website, I realise this post is totally off topic, but this is the off topic forum and I've found the people on this board to be very helpful so maybe you can help me with this.

Simple question: I want to start my own message board, what's the best way for me to do it?

I'm prepared to spend some money but would like to do it cheaply (or ideally for free).  I would also like to do this quickly, and want the board up and running within two weeks.  I have an intermediate level of computer literacy, and some simple HTML experience, but I know nothing about how to start a message board.  What advice do you have for me?

Thanks!

This is a very fast free way to do it:

http://www.getphpbb.com/

However, you have a lot of limitations on what you can change.

makephpbb.com is probably exactly the same as getphpbb.com.

You can get some good deals from dreamhost ~ $20 for a year if you find a code online (they are all over).  At least you would be able to try it out.  After that it would be $120 for a year, plust $10 for a domain name renewal.  They also have a 90 day money back guarantee.  They will install phpbb for you as well, along with some other free software if you want.

Simple Machines is probably the best forum engine i've seen/used. Never built my own forum before but forums that run on SM (including this one) are smexy.

True that, i have an smf board here: www.javaforums.net around 4000 members with a custom theme and mods. The site is about developing software mainly using java (games, chats and enterprise software) Too bad this forum doesn't have any mods because some of them are really useful to have.
