The *NEW* Riether Thread!
« on: October 19, 2009, 08:04:31 pm »
OK, First off, forget EVERYTHING I said in the previous thread. I absolutely despised what I did with them. They were awfully different from the original version, and nothing of what I intended.

This is the typical military garb of the ____________________ (Still looking for form of government)

First off, I'd like to point out the vast physiological differences in the original design. I was trying to make as demonic a creature as possible, so I gave them lots of spikes 'n stuff. They have highly developed... erm... what do you call those knobs just below your hands? Anyway, it has become a combat device, basically built-in serrated daggers. For safety, they're typically kept in metal casings. I have no idea where the four arm concept came from, but that was one of the things I hated about the new version.

Next, their personality. I have absolutely no clue where the status obsession idea came from, that was another thing that I harbored great hatred for. They were, and are "again" a military based society, with individuals aspiring all their lives, typically, to do something for the navy. One thing that survived from old to new and back to old, is their extremely strict code of conduct. For example, one rule in the book is: Do not kill without warrant. If you kiil for the sake of killing, you will be convicted.

As you can see, they aren't exactly the nicest species in the world. In fact, the entire concept was to be something of an "antibino". Whereas the Bino put a high priority on life, individuality, and spirituality, the Riether have no problem with assassination and death, individuality is frowned upon due to a high priority on social conformity, and the Riether have no religion, not counting the Code.

I'll add more later, just need to get the sheets and such.

Alright, this is gonna be awesome! I've been looking forward to this for quite a while.

Just one thing:
Quote from: Wikipedia
An emirate is a political territory that is ruled by a dynastic Muslim Monarch styled emir.
So... They're Muslims in Space?

I just though it meant a bunch of kingdoms.... huh, at least thats what the little note in the magazine we got in school today...

I also said it was a placeholder, so it's most likely it will chance once I look at the government wiki page.

I think this warrants a double-post. The individual states are kratocratic (that sounds silly), which goes perfectly with the "Warranted kills are honorable" Code Rule.

updated with planet.

And, I'll explain ships.

Riether ships have a very unique method of propulsion. The artificial element Solenium, invented by the Riether, is highly reactive in a magnetic field. The solenium resonates (sort of like quartz, right?) when it comes into contact with the field, the resonation waves traveling away from the field. These resonations tend to move the solenium with quite a bit of force. As it, a LOT. The downside of solenium is that it is extremely reactive to most elements, almost like antimatter. Typically, a long solenium rod is suspended somewhere in the ship. Most ships are too small to fully enclose the rods, so they're often held outside the craft.

Here's a rather uncommon subject: Disease

By far the most infamous disease known by the Riether is the deadly White Plague.

1. Early on in the infection: one would feel slightly under the whether; cough

2. Farther on: one would feel fatigued, slightly short of breath. Severe cough.

3. Midway in: individual is pale, and has developed chills. Cough is very severe, blood may come up.

4. Near the end: individual is very pale. Violent shaking. Cognitive skills are beginning to suffer. Cough is accompanied by blood.

5. Near death: individual is literally white as a sheet. Shaking has ceased; victim has no left over energy. Cognitive skill diminished to almost nothing. Chance of coma. At this point, what little blood the individual has left will begin to flood the lungs (or other internal structures present in that particular species), almost indefinitely killing the individual.

The disease is spread by both air and liquid, so the coughing is ideal for spreading it.

Maybe I should lay off Pandemic II :P

I wasn't really happy with the old ship design, so remade it. I also added a bit for some tech that I forgot.

First off, the Warp Shield. The Warp Shield is, well, the name says it all. It is kept on the back end of the craft in STL travel, since using it requires shutting down impulse (in this case, the Solenium rods). When it is required, the Solenium rods are cut off from the power source, rendering them inert, and thus safe to put closer to the craft, and retracted. Then, the Warp Shield is maneuvered into place, covering everything but the bridge. Several times, the Riether ships have been mistaken for another ship, since when the pursuers drop out of orbit, the Riether ship looks to be a completely different ship!

Another thing; Smaller Riether ships typically use the ships themselves, fitted with an armor piercing device, to ram ships and destroy them. Only the larger, slower ships use energy weapons. Sometimes even they have a sword like device fitted onto the bow. These give the ships a particular advantage to other speceis' ships, since they are mostly directed toward blocking light and plasma devices. This brings up another point; Riether ships don't have conventional shields. They use ablative armor. For those not familiar with Ablative Armor, it is basically a layer of armor outside the hull of the spacecraft designed to evaporate on impact of a weapon, or otherwise dissipate it. In this case, the armor is regenerative, so generally a small ship isn't capable of destroying a large Riether ship, unless it has an extremely fast firing rate. Smaller craft like fighters generally don't have defensive systems at all, but are very maneuverable.

Are cloaking fields unrealistic? because if they aren't I'dlike to use them. To balance it out, maybe they'll only work in the warp position?

Cloaking fields are totally realistic, although not exactly fields. We've invented them in real life, and they're called metamaterials. They bend light around them, making them invisible. They have so many applications it would take me hours to list them all, but some great examples are light-speed computers, super-hard metal plating used as windows, and cloaking devices.

For more info, just look them up on Wikipedia. It's amazing what science has accomplished.

Right, metamaterials. That would also justify why the cloak would only work when the ship is in warp configuration, since, if they were in the warp shield, then they would only be effective when they were covering the ship.

Blegh, I could've worded that better...

Ah, I see.

Well, compared to most species, the Riether are slightly lagging behind in the medicinal department. However, physicians are much more up to date, if not ahead of the galactic standard. They usually only have small, non-government run hospitals, with the doctor(s) only really making house calls. These places are few and far between, with only military workers getting frequent checkups, since the military employs physicians for fleets and other things, like space stations, etc.. Since most bacteria and viruses can't survive in the sweltering heat in the underground, with only the deadliest surviving, it's not unusual for a wave of "sniffles" to sweep through ships after landing parties contract more simple contagions from the planet. In fact, the Riether would probably do better with the Black Plague then the common cold.

Research is ongoing in combating the White Plague, though so far, all they've managed to do is prolong the suffering.

MOAR EYECANDY:

What you can do if you REALLY like DoGA

Zarakazan Drydock facility. Used to construct and service Dzarnon class cruisers. Since the Riether military only consists of one fighter class, one bomber class, one cruiser, and one command ship, these speceilized dydocks are very common. They are floated to any uninhabited planet Brithora happens to be passing near, and mining vehicles bring metal up to the station. When Brithora moves too far away, the drydocks are moved to the next planet, usually leaving the ground facility behind.

Weapons:

Riether prefer old-fashioned swords and the like over anything, this including their wrists. Though, typically, they are pressed into situations where ranged weapons are needed, so they use guns. nothing special, just plasma as per usual. They also, however, use solenium bombs and grenades. The solenium is suspended in a capsule via a magnetic field, which also makes it highly reactive. when the bomb contacts an object, the force makes the solenium jostle around and contact the inner capsule. This makes a rather very large explosion. Solenium can hold its reactivity for a while even after the magnetic field is taken away. As a last resrt, Riether ships can jettison the solenium driver rods, and when those huge things contact a ship or two, all heck breaks loose.

Rule #1: NEVER FOLLOW A CRITICALLY DAMAGED RIETHER SHIP, you will die.

The Riether aren't ones to overcomplicate things, and their military reflects that:

Ensign
- they wear black - The lowest in the group. Generally those who have just joined or show no real talent.

Lieutenant - they wear gray - Next up. These guys are generally in charge of doing the actual tasks, like cleaning, manning weapons, piloting ships, etc. Starfighter pilots have this rank, but are generally simply called pilots.

Commander - they wear green - Much more important. They are in charge of general operations, and typically 40 are assigned to a Dzarnon class. They keep things running smoothly.

Captain - they wear blue - The name speaks for itself. They command a starship, and everything that goes on in it.

Admiral
- they wear red - These guys are in charge of it all, and there's only five of 'em.

Sorry for the crap picture, I'm restricted to my phone only now >:(. I also apologize for forgetting to crop it.

Anyawy, this is the Riether's written language. It's ridiculously complex, making Chinese seem like child's play. It defines almost everything about what's being spoken and how to speak it. Tone of voice, expression, pauses, accents on words, etc.... Despite this, once you've learned it, it becomes very easy to read and write, and some consider it to be even better than more conventional forms of language. The shape and position relative to the other shapes around it are indicators of how the word should sound, sort of like letters. The dots and dashes and lines are very important, they indicate relations between distand shape groupings, as well as the pace, arrangement, and breaks in speech. Often, an initial one of these is presented at the top of the text, near the left side. The Riether, while not caring for art in it's more visual forms, they are surprisingly literate, and have produced a great deal of notable books, aside from the code.

Don't ask what it says, I don't read Brithora'an, I just make it XD

The biggest ship in the picture. Due to it's absolutely massive scale, it can run the cloak and the motivator units at once, giving it a competitive edge.

And now:

This is a heavy Riether Bombercraft designed around the stripped down hull of a Dzarnon. After seeing how effective the "Kamikaze ships" had been against the Core Combine ships, a ship specifically designed to carry Solenium bombs was built. Hard-pressed for time and funds, the research division simply modified an old un-refitted (Since all the ships in the Riether navy underwent a mass refit after the opening fight) Dzarnon class warship. The entire ship was converted into a huge bomb-bay, and as such, it has vastly tougher armor, and less propultion systems. It also lacks stealth material, and uses a rather crappy hyperdrive. It is still VERY much an experimental and work-in-progress design, and will have quite a ways to go past this proof-of-concept before it'll see any real battle.

I have some new and potentially so outlandish and perhaps a bit godmoddish, that It should remain just an idea.

Something I call Kinetic Disruptors.

The name is extremely misleading. The original concept involved just that, but it evolved over time, still keeping the old name. The "Kinetic Disruptor" concept is a machine that draws energy from the surrounding environment. In any form. Gravitational pull, light, heat, electricity, anything. Around the machine, gravity reduces significantly, it becomes very dark and gray, deadly cold (like absolute zero cold), all electric devices stop working (including your brain, quite hindering clear thought, or any thought at all, in some cases), etc.. This can be used as a power source, a weapon, almost anything.Eventally it could even destroy the fabric of space by sucking out all the energy, theoretically. This is could be the Riether's greatest invention ever.

The only problem is the size of a space-based device would be huge. Smaller ones in *heavy* backpack form require grounds to solid objects to directly draw energy from tham. Others, slightly larger, but require a supporting exoskeleton to hold, can draw sufficient energy from the air. The bigger the better though.

I shouldn't be able to quad-post!

Anyway:

This was a picture taken by a Core Combine deep space monitoring satellite (If they have those). The anomaly in the picture is massive―200 miles in diameter at it's largest point―and it extends for over 500 miles. There is another anomaly emerging in this grainy frame from the short video taken by the probe, it measures 20 miles long.

And this:

Is the Ship Comparison Chart.
Forgot the fighter, but it goes from left to right:
Dzarnon Class Capital Ship: 1.5 mi.
Valdorn Class Star Battleship: 3.5 mi.
Zer'kan Class Star Dreadnought: 7 mi.
Super Star Dreadnought D'Kora: 19.5 mi.

The scaling is a bit off.

In fact, it's a LOT off.

They should increase about twice the one before it. In other words, they all should be double the one before it, rather than only about 1.5 times.

Riether Three Dimensional Imagery Techniqes

One other little odd technology the Riether have come up with is a system called "Sand imagery". Basically, the system consists of three parts: Four sand (which is actually microscopic magnetic metal dust) tanks for the basic colors in the Riether visual spectrum, a heater of sorts to make alterations to the basic colors for more defined colors, and a little magnetic field generator to project the sand. Military display consoles can project over longer distances, as what is on typical War Tables, like what's in the RIS Dakara's war Room. Due to its solid state, it can deflect and otherwise influence ship sensors like a solid ship, and dummy ships as well as ship disguise modules are being experimented with by the Imperial Riether Military.
