Gearlan Chronicles: Freak Writes Novels!
« on: October 08, 2009, 12:14:43 am »
The Gearlan Chronicles is my little pet project I've been off and on for a while now, but it's one of the few things that I'm really dedicated to at the moment.  Eventually, my hope is to finish the first book by the end of 2010 and I've been tossing around the possibility of finding a publisher.  For now, however, I just want to start writing and see where it goes.

GC is a fantasy novel series focusing upon the travels of Thaze Thunderstaff, a man in search of the answers behind the murder of his parents and the conspiracies that follow.  I have more twists planned for this thing than stars in the sky, I just need to find the time to write it.  As you can see below, it took a... significant amount of time for me to get around to continuing it, and although I had entire chapters written that had yet to be uploaded, I am unfortunately temporarily unable to open them.  For now, here's the first three chapters.

Download Gearlan Chronicles 0.15: 111k

Note: Be sure to turn word wrap on.  it's also a nice idea to lower down the font size.  I keep it at 16 when I'm writing because my resolution is pretty high and I'm kinda far back from the screen.

Edits:

Finished chapter 3 10/9/09
Edit Chapters 1-3 10/14/09
second rewrite, conversion to .txt format 2/11/10
Chapter 4 added 2/17/10

I thought that was a pen-name :P Kidding, I like it.
I've read the story. I'm hooked! I really do like it a lot, you've built quite an Interesting world for your tale *thumbs up* Is there more of it though? It ends rather abruptly at Chapter Three.

Rewrite what you have first. It's been some time since you wrote it. You might have some new ideas you want to add in and correct some typos along the way.

I've just read it now, and all I can say is...

DAMN, THAT WAS AWESOME! ;D ;D ;D

Man, can you continue chapter three? I'm dying to know what happened to Thaze's plan regarding Polathas!  ;D

Heh, that was a cruel spot to leave off, wasn't it?

There are a couple hints earlier in the chapter if I recall.  I'll give it to you if you really want...

It's all in the herbs, baby.

Yeah, if you just read that I've ruined whatever I'm about to write next.  Oh well.

@ Snork that's kinda the point.  There isn't any more.  A basic outline of the next chapter or two in my head, but that's all.  This was intended to be a full size novel.  I just never got around to keep writing it and it got lost in the shuffle.  The point of this thread is to decide whether or not I should keep going.  So far, it looks like a good chance.

EDIT: wrapped up chapter three real quick.

I love making cliffhangers.

 :o

I actually never expected it to turn out that way... Wow...

You should write some more, it's pretty engrossing, as far as I'm concerned.

Anyways, I'm just curious... How can Thaze possibly fight the guy who just massacred an entire tavern full of tough  and grizzly people for five mugs of beer? :-\

It isn't? ???

So there's a chance that the Gearlan who did that already went on it's way?

I was assuming that it was him due to the fact that he is also harassing the village. But I guess it's a different guy, huh?

Man, their order is in great need of some internal house cleaning... :-\

So many corrupt members... Must be hard to be in a guild that's loathed by pretty much everyone due to irresponsible colleagues. :(

That's the general idea.  In fact, remember that not even Thaze's agenda is aligned with the rest of Gearlan.  Picture organization XIII, except with even more rebellious plots.

Gearlan should just go join the Mages Guild or something, yeah it's corrupt but at-least no one hates them THAT much.
Cept' House Telvanni, but they hate everyone. Bloody Ash-skins.

What's it about, generally?  Like, what's the theme?  30 pages is a bit much, unless they are small pages.

Ok, maybe you two don't get the point.  This is a full size novel, but it is unfinished.  I imagine that the entire piece would stretch to 2-300 pages.  The initial point of this thread was to see whether or not it would be worth my time to finish.

I'll start going over what I had already written tomorrow and I'll upload a new version within the next couple days.

What's it about, generally?  Like, what's the theme?

It's a typical fantasy setting, y'kno with swords and wizards and dragons and such.

Yea that NG reference is pretty fail man

Why don't you put on here some of the pictures of the junk you drew in school in here? Least I think you drew stuff for this.

remember kids if it's 30 pages of boredom a pretty picture makes it up to 33.3, repeating of course, percent better

Well, first of all my scanner's broken, secondly I don't have a tablet, and thirdly I can't do art on a pc for sh*t unless it's pixel art.

However, most of the stuff I was drawing was your Saihu characters.  The rest of it was split between M:tG Planeswalkers and avatar concept art for Whirled that I never bothered making due to the above three reasons.

Well if every game on my computer simultaneously stops working maybe I'll read it, knowing you its more subtle rip offs of games you've played instead of using an original plot

....isn't that right?

The sprites he made for his ongoing fantasy world thingy, GS knows it as the Kaizer Saihu RPG.  I call the whole thing in general Saihu.

Oh, and no.  Ripping off other people's concepts is your job.  Golbezza satellite, anyone?  Or how about Ezroth 7 Zeal is the same complex as Cloud & Sephiroth?  The list goes on.

GC is, or at least will, stand apart from a lot of other works.  It might not look like it at this stage, but unlike you I won't divulge the secrets so easily.

Edit: Oh wow, that ridiculously crappy drawing because, well the three reasons at the top.  Plus I was using the GFX editor in MultiMedia Fusion 2, which isn't exactly, well anywhere near decent.  It only has 16-bit color, which is why that looks like a denim jacket.

Never said I didn't  ::), I could get into the details of how this is really a spin-off of the real story but hey, why kill the fun

That'd be cool, doubt it though. Yea though I do divulge secrets a lot...more of them to you than anyone else though ::)

Yeah, I'm rewriting it.  I guess that when I first started, I really didn't know how I wanted it to end.  Like with the discussion of Polathas's true identity, I was actually trying to decide what I wanted for him myself WHILE I was writing that.

It should be fixed within the next couple days.

New version is up, not too many major changes throughout, but a few parts have been re-worded.

Edit: I've reset the poll too, since the rewrite option didn't really make much sense anymore.

What Genre is it? How would you classify it? I don't want to read it and have it infect my thoughts about my own writing. I already have enough influences floating around in there. >.>

So it's decided, I'm finally going to start writing this again.  I need SOMETHING to do all day other than cheap MMOs and Guitar Hero.

Anyways, there's something that's been bugging me that I want to resolve before I continue.  I was thinking I'd remove the romantic element between Thaze and Amy, at least in the beginning.  I mean, I want to establish a connection to the reader with these characters before I build upon their relations to each other.  I mean, writing that "perfect couple" crap just made me want to hurl and it just seems like it would be better from the perspective of flow.  Not to mention the psychological perspective, you know what they say.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  Plus, it just doesn't make sense for a guy who has it all to up and leave everything behind filled with uncertainty, not alone for her not to go with him.

I guess I've already decided it for myself, but what do you guys think?
