Space Station Farsearch Four - The hybrid test RP - OOC
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:42:56 am »
This RP will be using the brand new Hybrid RP rules, which may be found here.

Sign up quick, I'm planing on starting this as early as Friday evening EST.

Congratulations, you have been hand picked by the stalwart Commander Francis Deion to be the crew of Farsearcher Four, the greatest space station of the greatest empire on the planet Eyaru Prime. Starting from an orbit around Erayru Prime, to calibrate the station's equipment and crew's bearings in space, you will be part of history, to chart uncharted space, meet unmet races, and maybe even find those green women you always dreamed of. The road will be difficult, the other empires of Eyaru Prime may attempt to sabotage your attempts with Farsearcher Four, so stay vigilant, you never know when you may need to defend the station, your new home!

Name: Francis Deion
Age: 63
Role: Commander/Captain
Biography: One of the few to still remember the blunders of all the Farsearchers One through Three, Francis thew his life to danger to aspire towards his current position of commander of the latest Farsearch. The media followed him closely as he graduated top of his class in mechanical engineering, space specialization, and went on to work closely with the designers and developers of Farsearch Four to make sure it would not meet the same fate as its predecessors. As the space station neared completion, Francis surprised few when he officially announced his position as commander of Farsearch Four and started on a search for the most qualified to join the crew.

I'll be making a character soon.  I'm just a bit preoccupied with work at the moment.

Name: Marcus Gray
Age: 35
Role: Security
Biography: Marcus Gray is a commander at heart and is the leader of farsearcher's defense. While the scientists of the Farsearcher Four go about their daily business, he protects them and keeps the station in order. He spent several years in a small squad of marines before receiving his officer training. Even before he became an officer, he would always give his squad mates orders and helpful advice to keep them alive in times of extreme pressure.

Marcus follows a tight schedule every morning, but will not hesitate to help those along the way. On the same note, if he sees something or someone causing others trouble or harm, he wont hesitate to step in and break up the issue himself.

Name: Alistair Levi
Age: 35
Role: Administration
Biography: Alistair Levi is the current in the long line of the empire's ruling house of Roh. Seen by many as a guy who got a cush job with daddy's money, Levi hides under his posh exterior a true beat for control, at five he reorganized his nanny's schedules for maximum efficiency, and at twelve he was charting Primean war parameters, a military genius this is offset by his social awkwardness; form a young age, he treats people like video games, often manipulating them without any care or conscious, whether this will change on the staion is a matter worth seeing...
No, get a label gun and shoot them with labels like "Bad guy #1" "Bad guy #2" Slightly badder guy" "Guy that thinks he is bad but is really good and just confused"

Hopefully a joke.

Name: Alexa Rand
Age: 39
Role: Sciences (specifically Xenobiology and Xenoecology) / Medicine (unofficial)
Biography: Considered by many to be one of the best in her field, Rand was selected for the project for her practical, no-nonsense attitude. She is not one to jump to conclusions, making her ideal for interpreting the first detailed sensor readouts of alien worlds. Unfortunately, because she is a specialist, she has little to officially do until they actually reach said alien worlds. She passes the time as an assistant nurse in the Med Bay.

Name: Nikolai Vasiliev
Age: 26
Role: Small Craft Pilot/Security
Biography: Nikolai never did good in school. That wasn't to say he wasn't intelligent, just that he didn't try very hard. After realizing that his academics wouldn't get him into college, he joined the military. After a few years in the army, his qualities were recognized and his commanding officer put him up for a transfer to the Air Corps. From here Nikolai soared. He spent 4 years piloting all types of craft, both planetary and orbital, military and civilian. This invaluable experience made him an easy chose for the Farsearch team.

Name:  Will Reschard
Age:  57
Role:  Senior Monkey Wrangler
Bio:  No one quite expects to end up as a Wrangler.  It's not that the job is undesirable (most of the unsavory problems with monkeys were solved by gene-modding and very effective training), but that the career path leading to it tends to be complicated enough that no one actually plans on it happening at the start.

Certainly, Will didn't expect it when he went to school for spacecraft engineering.  But, somehow, over the next thirty years of on and off work, occasionally going back to school as the field changed, and taking a different minor every time, he ended up with the perfect skill set for the job.  Surprisingly, he liked it enough that he stayed on and eventually got assigned as the Senior Wrangler on the Farsearch Four.

And now to explain what a Monkey Wrangler is.

Every ship requires maintenance.  Often enough, a great deal of this maintenance takes place in small, hard to reach places, and is mostly a matter of replacing some small part or checking for wear.  Faced with the problem of reaching these areas, billions more could be spent on adding adequate crawl ways to the ship designs, or come up something to reach them.

At first robots were considered, but it would be years before they could articulate well enough to handle a significant portion of repairs.  In the mean time, it was between a number of specialized robots and a biological solution.  On the one hand, the robots took up less space and could be cared for relatively easily.  On the other, anything which caused the ship major damage could do the same to them, leaving the crew without the ability to repair when they need it most, and you can generally just give monkeys a storage closet with hammocks and feed them out of the same stock as people without installing a charging bay.  In the end it came down to gene-modded capuchin monkeys being orders of magnitude cheaper due to monkeys already existing and most of the work in genetic intelligence and dexterity modification already being done in unrelated drug trials.

Now most crews are accompanied by a number of monkeys, trained and gene-modded to navigate the innards of a ship and replace or report on parts.  A handful of Wranglers look after them, ensuring they are physically and psychologically fit and running training exercises.  The field requires an understanding of mechanics, veterinary medicine, human and animal psychology, and the mental fortitude to deal with a room full of bored monkeys.
Nefarious?  Nearly.  Ne’er-do-well?  Never!  Neither nearly names this narrator.  Naive and knowledgeable, notorious and inscrutable, this nascent Nero is known naturally as Neoadept.

Name: Nathan Taylor
Age: 32
Role: Doctor
Bio: The son of a physician and a surgeon, there was never any question about where Nathan would eventually make a career.  He had always done exceptional in school, and had managed to get into the best medical universities available on full scholarship, not that he needed it though with his parents' connections and sizeable wealth.  Still, despite his status, intelligence and money, he had never lost touch of why he wanted to become a doctor in the first place.  To help people.  This outlook has kept him happy and popular with among his peers and clients, his friendly attitude and cheerful smile always welcomed around the hospital.

This popularity, coupled with his profound skill for one as young as him and his connections made him stand out among candidates for the Farsearch 4 voyage.  Upon first hearing of his invitiation to join the expidition, he was reluctant.  He had commitments to his patients, and was not happy with the idea of leaving them.  But, with insitances from his parents, he eventually came around, and is now looking forward to the adventure that awaits him as Chief Medical Officer on the space station.

Name: Miyoko Suzuki
Age: 41
Role: Navigation
Bio: Originally an astronomer, around the age of 35 Miyoko suddenly panicked, realizing she was unhappy with the idea of working in an observatory her whole life. She went back to school and became a pilot. Despite her seemingly simple exterior, when she sets her eye on something she approaches it with surprising determination and confidence. Graduating first in her class, her combined knowledge of space and navigational skills made her an obvious choice for ship navigator.

Name: James King

Age: 30

Role: Storekeeper

Bio: James King is the Storekeeper on Farsearch Four and is responsible for ensuring that people get what they need, when they need it. He grew up in a moderately prosperous fishing village outside of one of the eastern urban centers on Eyaru Minor. For much of his childhood, James worked with his father as one of the village's sales representatives. In the morning they would head into the city and ensure that their village was getting the most for their goods. At night they would head back home and help the villagers load the next day's shipment. It wasn't the easiest work in the world but it exposed James to the wide world of commerce. James left the village during his teenage years and set course for the city where he hoped to open up a store of some sort. He spent the next decade working for various people and learning about the different aspects of supply and demand, world cultures, and the art of the sale.

It was during one of his more recent jobs that James became known to the people in charge of the Farsearch Four program. A delegation of scientists and researchers visiting from Eyaru Prime had put a call out for a rare breed of flower. Their hope was to be able to gather a sample so that it could be used to determine the effectiveness of Farsearcher Four's toxin reclamation system. By chance, one of their associates recommended James as "this guy who can find anything", and so they tracked him down. Not only was James able to get them their sample, he was also able to secure a steady stream of the rare perennial. Time passed... and then two years later James received a notification that he had been chosen to take part in an exciting new program, the Farsearch Four program. He signed up immediately.

Name: Louis Peelzer
Age: 41
Role: Maintenance
Biography: Louis was a simple engineer until he decides to quit his old job and tried going higher up to support his family. To do this, he tried applying for the Farsearch Four, a massive space station set out to travel to the farther reaches of space, and got accepted.

His technological knowledge has helped him through the ranks in the maintenance department. He is pretty good at fixing most defaults without any help, unless it's a big problem.

Guys I was wondering if we could edit our bio posts so that they seem to be in the same universe, maybe an offhand remark here a comment there, just something to show unity. I see several opportunities in the last couple of posts and i though it would help us get into character.
