No one was really sure when peak oil was reached, just that it was at some point in the 21st century. Prices rose, wages fell, and a whole mess of economic problems came along with it. Everyone knew that oil was a huge part of the global economy, but no one realized how important it truly was. Resources became harder to find and nations became more aggressive when it came to diplomacy. The idea of government, after all, is to serve it's people. When you think about it, that's all they were trying to do. Secure their position in the world to better support their people.

The United States and a coalition of western nations took it upon themselves to keep the peace around the world, but more and more countries felt that they were getting the short end of the stick. Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and South America all erupted into conflict at some degree. Countries fought their neighbors, revolutionaries saw it as their time to shine, and the West got bogged down trying to hold everything together.

Then the **** really hit the fan. Drought and famine struck first, wreaking havoc around the world. Industrialized agriculture came to a standstill as the cultivation techniques led to soil erosion. Many believe this was how the ebola virus became so widespread. Large numbers of people became mobile as their homes were destroyed by war and lack of food. It was nearly impossible to setup efficient border checks. In the end, everyone knew someone that was afflicted with the disease...
