List of largest stars in the GS galaxy
« on: August 09, 2009, 08:15:25 pm »
Can you all supply me with the list of largest stars in the GS galaxy? It's a project, so I don't mind if I have to make one or two of them.

Well, there was Akra, but it went supernova...

Does that count?

How large was Akra compared to VY Canis Majoris, the largest star known to humans? If it's larger or the same size, then it can possibly make the top 10, possibly even top 5.

Let me check on my virus-ridden computer...
K, well... erm... Apparently the term 'big' is lost on me...
What is the typical amount of of size increase does a star experience near it's death, proportionally?
Anyone know?
Canis is 864900000 miles in diameter
Akra was, at it's stable point, 22599837 miles in diameter.
Either Akra is really small, or Canis is reaaaaaaaaaaaally big.

Akra is very roughly 1 40th the size of Canis. If the Sun is projected to double in size near it's end, Akra seems like it would be about two times (changed that) maybe, so 1/ 20th of Canis at it's best.
In theory.

Just why are you compiling this list?

The only good use I can find for this list is to tell spacers where not to go, because stars of that magnitude are extremely dangerous. Unbelievable solar flares wipe out any nearby life, and their lifespan is all too short, due to the fact that stars of that size(known as hypergiants) end their lives with a hypernova, which briefly outshines an entire galaxy and produces a black hole that shoots out two vast jets of deadly gamma rays upon birth. Fortunately, hypernovae only occur approximately once every 100 million years. I estimate that there are 50-60 naturally-occurring black holes in the galaxy. A better idea would be to compile a list of hypergiants, black holes and other dangerous phenomena and their locations in the galaxy.

The Gorrillan Phrigh's Homestar is very large but still far from going supernova. No clue on exact measurements.

How large is The Phrigh homestar compared to Canis Majoris or VV Cephei, the largest star before Canis was proved to be larger?

No clue. It is approximately 45 times larger than our sun.

Unfortunate. VV Cephei is over 1600 to 1900 times as large as the Sun. Better luck next time.

UM, LOL.  Big but tiny stars, XD

Get Akra on #1 until a larger comes, because it is the largest, I say.

Actually, the Phrigh are very lucky that they exist at all. The larger the star the longer the lifespan, so the long-lived red dwarfs are the most likely to support life because it has a longer chance to occur and evolve. A sentient race from a blue star is very unlikely, as blues are the largest and shortest-lived.

Sorry, but I don't understand your sense of humor. I'm being serious for this list. Maybe you can make it on the most famous people in the GS forum, but that is for another day.

On the topic, do I have to make up ALL the stars on this list?

I would imagine so, because we generally don't keep a list of the biggest stars in the galaxy handy.

While people may have some information about the stars where their race origionated, they will almost definetly not be the biggest.  Why would you even need this information anyway?

Omegatripod and I have talked amongst ourselves and decided that there is an extremely large star to the lower left of their home systems on the galactic map that is 780,530,000 miles in diameter and was formed recently, only about 10,000 years ago. The Perrachi refer to it as KKS 27 while the Goonals know it as the mythological name of Karboudain Noratu, abbreviated in the scientific community as KN-1.

Compare KN-1/VVS 27 to VV Cephei, WOH G64, or VY Canis Majoris, the largests 3 stars known to man. Canis dwarfs ALL other known stars in real life.

Again, I ask why on Earth you need this information in the first place.

Also:

Canis dwarfs ALL other known stars in real life.

No it doesn't.  While it is the biggest known star, you say that as though the closest star to it's size is a fraction of it's size, while WOH G64 is about the same size and VV Cephei A is only a bit smaller.

Well you don't really need a list for that.  Just do what everyone always does and make things up as you need them.  As long long as it doesn't conflict with something already said, it should be fine.
