So what is college like?
« on: July 24, 2009, 03:53:24 pm »
Seeing as how I'll be attending sometime soon, I was curious what I should expect from college.

Will my undergraduate years different greatly from my under-undergraduate years?
Do the experiences of Justin Long and Drake Bell in various motion pictures speak to the experience? Or the show Greek? Or Undeclared?
Will I have to write 600 page term papers?
Will falling in love be a thing of passion, mystery and intrigue?
Have things been somewhat exaggerated?

I look forward to your responses and or lack thereof.
Also, feel free to post your Majors/Minors

I'm going to be Majoring in English, Double Minoring in Theater and Journalism

P.S. High school graduation was fun, got to speak in front of 400 something people. If anyone's interested I can post the link.

That kind of depends on which country your from, as college doesn't tend to be "american-college" throughout the world

It really isn't all that different. The best way I can describe it is that you can walk over to your friend's place in your underwear and eating a sandwich and there's really nothing wrong with that. I guess for some people it is an amazing change (if their parents clamped down on them a lot) but for the most part it's just school and you have to take care of your own place. There's so much support staff at a college that you really aren't "on your own" or anything.

The biggest changes will be socially; people will act like themselves all the time seeing as they never have to go home to Mom and Dad. Probably the most important advice I would give you is that you need to do the work. Drink or try your drugs or whatever it is that you feel like you should do; but always keep your GPA at the top of your priority list. If you treat college like one big party, the party ends as soon as you leave. Do everything in moderation and get your diploma and the party will last as long as you want it to.

College was a walk in the park. Especially the last year, I think i was in school 1 hour 4 days a week. ^^

It's a bit different here in Sweden, so don't get your hopes up :)

There's a quote that people say...

"There's a time and a place for everything and that place is college."

And my Step Dad told me this one...

"Don't **** up, half of that's our money."

Don't do drugs. There's always the small chance that stuff could go wrong because, you know, it's illegal in most places. Maybe I'm just opposed to breaking the law in most situations, especially when it comes to drugs, but I think it's just a bad idea.

Oh... looks like we hit the college/university speech barrier; it's an honest mistake and for future reference, it should be clarified that Sgore is talking about University (or that place you go after about 12 or 13 years or "regular" school).

hm.. I guess.

We have something called "Gymnasium" that starts after 9 years of obligatory school. You're about 15-16 years old at that point, anyways "Gymnasium" lasts for 3 years. You don't have to do it but if you wanna get a job you're adviced to. So it serves the same purpose as college, more or less. After that you can either continue your studies on the university or start working ^^

That should explain the swedish school system a little.

I'll assume you're talking about American college...

I've only been to my current college for one year, but it's basically like High-school with many times more freedom and teachers that don't suck (for the most part).

Been going to a community college since I was 15. I don't know what those big universities are like but this school was pretty much just like high school, but more is up to you. For example, if you don't come to class no-one is going to call the school police on you, you'll just miss everything taught that day, which is usually a lot, especially if you have a 2- or 3-day-a-week schedule. It is a little more laid back, especially the advanced classes. Sometimes there's no homework at all, sometimes there's homework every day, depends on the teacher. I haven't had to write any essays more than 4 pages long, but then again I haven't taken an English class yet.
Yeah, [Kishmond] came back from Africa, but the ponies have him now.

Community college isn't really a big change from high school (I've been to community colleges, universities, and everything in between); only the academics are harder... maybe. The shock with a larger school stems from living on campus.

I love my college. I do now, at least, just as I'm about to finish my first diploma (I'll have two diplomas before the age of 20! Woo!), but, at first, it was heart-wrenching because I didn't fit in with anyone.

Now, I'm still kind of a social outcast but more by choice than anything. I can fit in if I choose to and that's what matters.

Oh, I'm also learning cool stuff!

(Grades/Clubs/Friends/Etc...) Expect a post in 3 or 4 years asking what Grad school will be like... ;)

I suppose it all started at the end of the summer of '09. I couldn't have been more than 18 then, but my world was about to open up in more ways than I could ever imagine...

(Cue "Sister Golden Hair" by America)

I joined an Improv/Sketch comedy club, ended up performing with them in front of over 500 people at one point while opening for Bo Burnham, got freaked out over a bad grade on a test that I might lose my scholarship, played beer pong for the first time at a girl's 19th birthday party (though I opted to use root beer as I was driving myself and some other people home that night), uploaded a personal project I had been working on since High School to YouTube, made some of my best friends ever, made sure to stay in touch with some of my other best friends ever (I've been missing them pretty terribly), got a crush on one of the newer friends (didn't say anything, but that's a whole different story...), got better at stand-up, got a one sentence long positive review in the school newspaper, had an awesome birthday (I am soon getting a new bike! We had put off getting it until after exams), found out who Flo Rider was, participated in a Play-in-a-day festival (we ended up writing a Disney Parody Musical Murder Mystery), had an amazing time, learned things about myself and others that I am so very thankful for and made me feel like I owe so much to everyone I met.

In terms of academics:

Major: English
Minors: Theater and Journalism

1st Semester
-Science Fiction (mostly focused on cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk, but went over some other things too...)
-Acting I
-Foundations of Journalism and Media Studies
-The Oceans
-American Politics

2nd Semester
-Intro to Writing in English Studies
-Intro to Reporting and Newswriting
-Judaism: Traditions and Practices
-Intro to Linguistics
-Intro to Technical Theatre

Ended up getting straight As both semesters (with one A-)

And seriously, having you guys comment on this post really calmed me down before starting school. I gained a lot of self-confidence this year and I want to say thank you again.  :)

(And If you'd like to see that personal project thing, please let me know!)

Alright, so three years after my last post in this thread, I actually am a college grad (as of a few days ago)! I figured now was as good a time to any to thank you all for your advice going in. It really was helpful! (And I ended up doing pretty well academically, which I'm happy about!)

Now I just need to deal with the rest of the entirety of my life.

Anywho, thank you all again!

Yeah man, Look at the Burakumin.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burakumin

My favorite link to give to weeaboos :Y

That or the Ainu people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ainu_people

Those people are so beaten and down trodden, they actively tell their children to wed non-Ainu so their progeny can stop being marginalized. That is the kind of self loathing the west WISHES it could instill into its oppressed minorities.

So, last week I got my final offer for uni. All but one unconditional (and the condition is sending them 'original academic qualifications'). I've got until the 27th of June and a bunch of Open Days to decide.

I've been telling everyone that would listen and this seems like the place to tell you guys.

I think it's more like sending them my certificates of my GCSEs, A-Levels. You'd think I'd be able to scan them and send them digitally, which is what one of them wanted.

The best part? None of them asked for a portfolio, despite actually having one this time around. And all but one cared that I forgot to my GCSEs in my application (even then they just asked for them)...

Where have you applied?

Bath Spa, Creative Writing (My friend went there for a different degree. She said it was beautiful, but because I live so close, I won't get into halls.)
Falmouth, Creative Writing (Where another friend did Creative Writing and English Literature. A nice little seaside town, but a bit too 'old world' according to another friend of mine.)
Bournemouth, Scriptwriting for Film and Television (This is the only place I've been before, from the last time I applied. This course works with the Media Production Course, which I think is exciting. It's where my younger brother (who didn't need to take 3 gap years to figure his life out) is, but it's a different building.)
York St. John, Creative Writing and Media (My Falmouth friend did her masters in York, but this is slightly different. Again, another beautiful place, I'm told. Plus, I was advised by another friend to go as far away as possible - he went to Belfast.)

The first three all have open days this month, so I can get a proper look at them before. York doesn't, but they have campus tours on Wednesdays. I just have to figure out how to get up there.

As someone who did most of a degree in an old fashioned seaside town I'd suggest you go to Bath or York  :P

Also don't think there's anything bad about taking three gap years. I know at the moment it seems like you've really held yourself back and everyone else has a head start over you, but really, it doesn't matter at all. I went straight to university from school, spent four years there, didn't get a degree and then dropped out. I'm going to a completely different university later this year and I already know I'm going to kick the asses of all the stupid teenagers that are straight out of school :Y
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

It felt like that once upon a time, but, if anything, I've got a head start for when it's all over. In those three years (2 years ago today was my first performance at the Bristol Old Vic), I've built up something I can come back to. Even today, my theatre company are working out a monthly performance night at Bristol's most bohemian pub/cafe. Saturday, I was running around a festival, singing 90s love ballads and enticing people into a caravan to give their loved ones an improvised song (we even got a proposal), which the director responsible wants to take to other festivals.

Basically, I'll be joining you in kicking ass.
