[NC] Tamarik Separatists
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:00:26 pm »
Wow, it's been a while since I've done the Creation Corner thing.  Let's get this show on the road.

Hopefully more pictures from me and others are on the way. (Hint Hint)

I wanted to get a thread up on these guys, but I don't feel like writing tonight. So for now here is a bare bones summary:

The Tamarik are originally from the old, main galaxy, and are a member race of the Fredonian Alliance.  (You can check the thread in my signature for more information, I'll pull out the relevant posts soon.)  Some of the Tamariks had a falling out with the Alliance and left FA space for parts unknown, winding up in the Novus Cluster.  They have set up shop on a planet or two, and are ready to start a new chapter in the history of their species.

More information is coming, including Biology, History, and Weapons and Vehicles.

Biology

Tamariks are warm blooded creatures that stand roughly three feet tall.  Despite their diminutive size they are hardy creatures with a hefty beak and sharp claws on their hands, feet, and prehensile tail.  In modern times they file down their claws except for the ones on their tail.

The Tamarik's wings give them great maneuverability, though flight burns up a lot of energy.  To compensate, they have a variable metabolism.  During normal activity they can only make short flights before having to rest.  But for long flights or when they are under stress, their bodies kick into high gear.  Extra chambers in their lungs and heart start working to increase oxygen flow and their bodies burn through energy reserves at an increased rate.  This pace can be kept for an extended period of time, but only if they can stop for more food.  Therefore Tamariks on a long fight or on the battlefield either bring high energy food with them or act like a plague of locusts.

Tamariks aren't capable of flight until relatively late in their lives.  Young Tamariks have stubby wings that produce a shrill whine when flapped.  In the past this was used to alert adults to danger, now it is mainly away for the young to annoy their elders.  Tamariks gain the ability to fly in their equivalent to puberty.  For several weeks their skin becomes dry and scaly, especially on their backs.  Eventually their backs scale over into a sort of shell, revealling fully developed wings when they finally fall off.  Needless to say, Tamarik teenagers are very irritable during this period.

Tamariks lay eggs in clutches of one to four, though two eggs at a time is by far the most common.  The eggs are initially soft and leathery, but harden in a few hours. In the past this time was used to wedge the eggs into a safe corner to keep them from rolling away.  Tamarik females can control when they release eggs for fertilization.  They can therefore produce as many as four clutches a year, or only produce one clutch in their lifetime.

All in due time, Snork.  I guess I can't say that if it took me this long.  How about, first things first.  And first, we have some history to go over.

History of The World A Moon, Part I

The Tamarik started as nomadic tribes in the dense jungles of Tamos, one of many moons around a gas giant.  Some tribes began setting up permanent villages in either tight clusters of trees or in massive trees that dwarfed those around them.  The Tamarik had to learn to defend themselves from predators of all shapes and sizes in the jungle.  As tribes began to settle in permanent locations they turned these fighting skills against each other, leading to countless brutal wars.  Such fierce competition led some tribes to move out onto the plains.  Terrified of the wide open spaces, these settlers brought seeds and saplings with them and planted groves of their own, living on any high point they could find while the trees grew.  In this way The Tamariks spread across their planet, enlarging forrests suited to the climate.  When the habitat could not support trees, they built cities of towers and spires to stay off the ground.

Tamarik civilization progressed much as any other.  Great powers rose and fell, there were times of war and peace, famine and plenty.  In general countries and wars tended to be small and numerous.  Eventually a worldwide council formed, not to prevent war but to make sure war was waged correctly.  Conflicts were to be limited to the countries directly involved, no treaties between countries to launch massive world wars.  Battles were to be fought between armies, no total war waged against civilian populations. Of course, the rules of engagement were broken from time to time and the offending country would be pummeled by the international community, but these instances were rare.

This violent yet stable status quo existed for many years and the Tamarik generally thrived.  Wars kept the population at a sustainable rate and the Tamarik did not concern themselves with what the galaxy might contain beyond their green moon.  But that would all change when the galaxy came to them...

History of A Moon, Part II

The status quo of the Tamarik was broken in an instant by the arrival of a scouting ship from the Fredonian Alliance.  After a period of observation and at times tense diplomacy on either side, the Tamarik were offered entry into the interstellar community of the FA and their society was changed forever.  The conflicts between countries now seemed petty with the stars opening up before them.  Tamariks left their home world by the millions to colonize new planets, start new lives on already established worlds, and to serve in the military of the FA.

The Tamarik prospered in this Alliance for many, many years, but eventually several grievances rose between them and the other dozen or so races in the FA.  Politics of the Alliance meant that the Tamariks were limited to a certain number of planets to colonize and immigration quotas were established on established planets with mixed populations to keep the representation of different species roughly equal.
Another issue was the Tamarik's status in the FA military.  Their small size and flight gave them great mobility on the battlefield and made them a small target, but it also meant they couldn't operate heavier weapons systems.  This meant they were often regulated to support roles for larger races, an insult to their long history as warriors.  This and falling on the wrong side of a few internal conflicts in the FA led to increasing discontent with their place in the Alliance.  Feeling increasingly boxed in and with no control of their destiny, some began to consider making a fresh start.

In a daring move, millions of Tamarik civilians and roughly a third of the Tamariks in the FA military launched a raid on an FA base containing several experimental programs and stole a ship fitted with the newest version of the High Improbability Drive.  Using this one ship, the disgruntled Tamariks warped their entire fleet to a random point in space.  Lucky to have not found wound up in the middle of a star, the Separatists found themselves in the Novus Cluster.  After one jump the experimental HID drive promptly broke, but the now colonists made the best of it.  Once they found a suitable star system they settled on a few planets and moons.  The Separatists are unsure of the path they wish to take in their new surroundings, but they are ready to make a name for themselves.

Probably not a Goat, either.
