The Many Uses of the UFO
« on: March 25, 2005, 10:55:32 pm »
Since a lot of recent posts and topics have been going this way.

What are the possibilities for the use of the UFO?

Will Wright said that it would be the "swiss army knife" of your race.

Currently we know the UFO can~

  • Abduct creatures
  • Transport creatures (and drop them at very large heights)
  • Experiment on creatures(?)
  • Travel anywhere (possibly?)
  • Create volcanos (which eventually create the atmosphere on a planet)
  • Use the Genesis Device (which turns a planet into a hospitable eden in moments)
  • Communicate with other planetary civilizations
  • Destroy planets!

Did I miss something?
Comments on UFO use possibilities?

The UFO can't actually destroy planets, Will did it via a missile fired from his home planet. Other than that, nice idea and list.
One thing, though... you might want to group confirmed abilites together, then "speculative" ones.

Are you sure? A lot of sites say or imply that it was shot from the UFO.

No, it came from the UFO. First ... I saw it happen. Second, the UFO was in a different part of the galaxy when he destroyed the planet. Third, the UFO has weapons on it, he showed us both the "regular" weapons and then the "mega" weapon (those are my names, not his).

Just ooc, was there any indication of scale with the UFO? Is it huuuge!!?? Or, like, VW bug sized?

Oh yeah, does it 'land', say, to plant a colony or something?

I was thinking a lot of people have said you can only go to the radio waves but if you can terraform any planet... that suggests going anywhere.

My geuss is point and click and off you go not that you drive it in first person.
I survived the flood of 2008 and all I got was this crappy homelessness.

Ah? I see... I think that I saw it mentioned that way somewhere, and your podcast doesn't actually say either way (just checked, up until now I assumed it confirmed that bit), so I assumed it to be true. Thanks for the correction, and sorry for the confusion.

Speaking of corrections/confirmations, I think craigp mentioned that there were different ways to color your designs, and that Will Wright sort of "cycled" through them before commiting to them. I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere else, including your podcast; could either of you elaborate a bit on the subject?

How objects are colored is pretty much a mystery to eveyrone. In one of Steve's Podcasts he mentions how he really wanted to see hwo that part was done.

I can back Steve up on the 'coming from the UFO' bit. In addition, the UFO seemed to be quite large - easily half the size of a 'city'.

Well, if they really want it to be great, there will be two ways to fire the missles.

Oh, right.

So do the cities get InterPlanetary Ballistic Missiles?

We'll have to wait and see. I don't want my plant being destroyed while I'm destroying other planets.

Since having your home destroyed while you are away is such a big concern to the player they will either A. not let is happen or B. make you able to prevent this.

You just have to get an alarm system for the neighbourhood.

If an enemy or unknown thingy enters your 'aerospace' you get a warning message and jump back.

Assuming you have a FTL drive.

I know this hasn't been mentioned in any of the reviews, but if there is a possibility that a UFO from another civilization approaches your space or your homeplanet, wouldn't it be great if there was some way to build planetary defenses in the form of satellites carrying weapons? Or, like we've discussed earlier; smaller vehicles? (As in smaller spaceships to patrol your space..) I really hope this will be incorporated in the game.. (Who knows, they might be keeping an eye on this forum for ideas? ;D)

It is HIGHLY unlikely that the computer players will have UFOs or ANY form of interplanetary travel or weapon. First, he said it was a content creation tool: not something that a computer is likely to be able to use very well. Second, because of its movement capabilities and your inability to monitor planets you aren't ON, it would be extremely irritating to try to deal with.

That said, the race he encountered did shoot anti-air weapons at him.

Pretty simple to put satellites with that kind of stuff into orbit.

perhaps we should split it up in aliens having no "UFO"-creation tool, and aliens having no interplanetar/interstellar travel ability at all.

when you can fly around the galaxy, found colonies, terraform planets and stuff, wouldnt it be pretty boring if you only face planetbased cultures?

also it seems to me there is always some competition going on.
from brown blops, to crab things, to other cities.
wouldn't there be part of the game missing if you were "alone"? i cetainly would miss it.
Change is being.

I agree with Therlun.. I always watch documentaries that have to do with the galaxy and the possibility of extra-terrestrial life and I'm always fascinated by that formula that calculates how much intelligent life might be out there.. Wouldn't it be a bit weird if it turns out that when humans travel to the stars they find out that every other intelligence was confined to their own planet?

It would seem equally weird for a game like this to have this type of system.. Cooperation and interaction with other beings is essential from the beginning upwards, but in the end, you'll be the one who dominate the galaxy with your spaceship.. Sounds a bit ridiculous.. It wouldn't be nice if the other aliens would be able to travel to your star and blow up your planet, sure, but it would be nice if you could encounter a small empire, confederacy, federation, or whatever type of union, that you could fight/cooperate with..

I value this aspect of the game more than most of the other aspects, so I seriously doubt if I'll buy it when I feel that this isn't handled with enough realism..  :(
