Oh, I get!  ;D

Kinda like those "We are destined, not despite of our choice, but because of it" kinda affairs in some metaphysics books, eh?  :)

More or less.  Other good examples would be Fry being his own grandfather in Futurama or the Ectobiology in Homestuck.

@ martyk A two dimensional plane has no depth perception.

How do you know?  Do you live on a two dimensional plane?  I was under the impression that we were regarding this as flat-landers, viewing a 2-dimensional circle from the side, since that's the only way it could look like a line as you described.  Otherwise, a circle looks like a circle.

A two dimensional plane cannot convey over two variables of size. Depth Perception is an illusion caused by our eyes and brains. When sliced on a 2D scale a circled will either be a line segment equal in legth to its diamiter or two symetrical eleipses joined at a point with a sum circumference equal to that of the original circle.

*PILE OF BS*
It looks like a circle. 'O' is a 2-d circle. It looks like a circle.

Its a 2D circle in a 3D space intersected by a 2D Plane (here representing our plane of vision.)

Why can't they have width perception if we have depth perception?
:o Whoa... that was deep.

What does any of this have to do with Nauceans?
Probably not a Goat, either.

Naucean time-travel.

@ yuu. You got that from me! >:( :P

Riiiiiiight...

Seriously though, I've always thought deeply about the arguments of guys like Hippo or Calvin so I'm pretty sure I developed it independent of this site.

@ martyk A two dimensional plane has no depth perception.

They can have depth perception, using physical contact and judging the angle of other landmarks in relation to the circle or anything they are currently measuring the depth of.

Indeed, it's invariably much harder than in the 3D world, but it can surely be done using basic trigonometry.

I was talking about your "predestined" quote. Word for word from the Quote Thread. But what I was saying is that depth perception is a mechanic of the human eye and brain. No one is looking at this hypothetical circle becuase they can't; it doesn't exist. If we used a hula hoop or something to represent it in the real world I would get it, but this is an abstract geometric figure.

Mathematicians can "see" nD figures using their minds, so I'm pretty sure even the flat-landers would figure that out eventually.

The only guy who I really doubt when it comes to figuring out depth through inference is the "Dot King" who lived in that 1D dimension of his.

Oh, and as for the quote...

I inferred that from one of hard predestination's critics, whose names eludes me right now, unfortunately.

How is my own quote in any way coming from you, though? Sorry, but I'm at a bit of a loss.  ???

Lush, you can't attempt to prove your own point using abstract arguments, and then say we're not allowed to counter it using other abstract arguments.
