E3 - 2009
« on: May 29, 2009, 02:19:09 am »
Woo E3 is just around the corner, and it's time to talk about your hopes, dreams and predictions.

Here's the Main lineup:
Microsoft - Monday 10:30am PST
Nintendo - Tuesday 9:00am PST
Sony - Tuesday 11:00am PST

Here's what I want to see form everyone...

Microsoft - 1) I wanna see this Motion camera controller they've been working on. It would be nice if it was super awsome and changes the way we think about games, but it'll probably be just ok and no one will buy it.

2) Games. Lost Planet 2, Dead Rising 2, Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, Halo ODST and some new stuff we never seen. Also lets see some new sweet XBLA games while we're at it.

3) Wanna hear some big announcements about new functions coming to NXBE. More stuff with Avatars and fix the friends list.

4) New fancy pants Zune. OK i don't really care about Zune but i like hearing about gadget stuff.

5) Bringing It Home. I wanna see a lot of demos come out on XBL, usally we only get 3.

Nintendo - I've more or less given up on my Wii as a gaming platform, mostly because I own all three systems. 1) I want a New Mario or/and Zelda. I pretty much don't care about anything else. Maybe they will surprise me with something new and fancy; hopefully they will.

Sony - 1) New PSP. Again I don't care about the PSP it's just i like new things and the DS has already had two new version, where as the PSP is the same as it ever was.

2) Games. Heavy Rain, the new game by the Shadow of the Colossus people, Fat princess.... I think there are some other games but I can't think of them right now. I don't care about God of War 3, but it does look nice.

3) Home. Bring some more cool stuff to it. There are some new spaces out  right now, like one thats called the presentation room (or something like that). It's a room with a giant screen and it would be cool if they streamed their press conference in home. Behind the screen there looks to be a big giant metal doors that could open up to relieve a replica of their E3 area, Like what they did for TGS. That might be asking for to much but at least bring us some E3 demos to download.  ;)

There are other things I wanna see out of E3 but that can wait for later. What are you guys excited for?

I need a new tag.

I'm also looking forward to ODST and ME2. I hope Nintendo does come up with something good though, I've only had my Wii for 6 months and its already fading into disuse.

Any words on Bioshock 2 or Dragon Age?

Hey yeah! I bet it'll be almost as good as Onlive!

And the Phantom!

Well, okay, this one might actually exist. But do you really think that a little box on top of your television will give you a happy smiling family to play 360 with?

Ubisoft rained on the parade a little... they are releasing a camera too and it's for the Wii. It does similar things. It even scans!

It's got some great ideas but there is no way in hell that it will ever work the same way it shows in the trailer.

Or like the Wii. A sensor in your hand will always beat just a camera.

(And that's coming from a 360 fan)

Remember people. Most games for the Wii don't have very good controls because either people or developers don't know how to use it right.

I was impressed with Microsoft's conference, here are my random thoughts on it.

Halo ODST looks sweet. L4D2 Oh boy! Crackdown 2 Woot. Alan Wake I'm looking forward to it but it's lacking something, needs more umf. Free satellite radio for gold subscribers, please let me play music in the background and give the ability to change stations from the guide. Twitter and Facebook, that's cool it's there not sure how much i'll be using it. Shadow ops A Metroid clone for XBLA, yes please! Natal They could do some cool stuff with it. Milo (was that his name?) who doesn't want to hang out with little boys... er I mean, who doesn't want to verbally abuse little boys and draw wangs on their homework.... er I mean, I'm not creepy, you are! (seriously) If it actually works and it's not Peter hiding behind a curtain, then it would be some amazing tec.

There some other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting but overall I give MS an 9/10.

To bad for me I'm going to miss Nintendo's and Sony's press conferences tomorrow, but I'm going to record them on the DVR so I can experience and MEGA tons first hand.

The next metal gear a 360 exclusive!.

I think i am going to hyperventilate...

EDIT: Of course...somehow i still have to play number 4...

Looks like it will be Multi-Platform

The SWTOR cinematic trailer was one of the best trailer's I've ever seen.
Other awesome stuff; Assassins Creed 2 trailer, Just Cause 2 trailer, Mass Effect 2 trailer (too...many...two's...) Modern Warfare 2 (damnit!), Halo ODST(whew).
And of course Project Natal. That Milo thing was just creepy.

You guys need to watch more videos of natal before criticizing it.

They have a few stage demos of it and you can see that whats happening on screen is exactly what the person playing is doing. If you want to be skeptical i would be skeptical of Lionheads Milo project to go with it.

EDIT: However my wallet is quivering in fear in the corner. Natal..onlive plus all the cool games i want to play.

Burden of proof/exceptional claims blahblablah.

It looks okay, actually, but there's no sense in hyping it up. I mean, it was kind of fun in 2003, why would it be 'super amazing' now?

Of course, the thing that really gets me about the trailer is the kid skateboarding. He owns a skateboard! It's sunny outside! What the hell, Microsoft?

So now both MS and Sony have a Wii-killer.

I think Sony's looks to be more better than MS'. It's like having two Wii Motion Plus controllers in both hands, wireless nunchuck, and better IR tracking. Which disappoints me how Nintendo can easily fix all of this for the Wii right now.

I dunno... I have trouble seeing the other two motion controllers taking off and becoming wildly successful. I'm not sure they can pull the same groups that Nintendo has already grabbed ahold of; plus, I doubt their sincerity when it comes to "innovating" the industry. They're not going to try to edge the controller out of the picture any time soon.

And the PSP Go! seems a little shaky to me. Not sure that's gonna hit - at least not at that price point.

Overall I think Sony did the worst of the three (though not by much) and that Microsoft and Nintendo are about even (Microsoft has some edge though with the new hardware).

Microsoft: B-
Nintendo: B-
Sony: C+

OKAY! I was on the Wii and looking at the My Nintendo Channel. People with Wiis, please remember to use this! There's so much good info there.

First off, New Super Mario Bros. Wii looks WAY AWESOME and actually challenging! Second, I rewatched the Metroid: Other M video a couple times... Other M... MOther. What's that mean? Awesome! Third, BIT.TRIP CORE gameplay (that has been around for almost a month, how'd I miss it!?)...

E3 2009 has partially restored my faith in Nintendo to make decent games. My Wii tends to just sit in the corner looking lonely because all they have out for the Wii is mostly shovelware. Lets hope these newly announced titles are good.

And my PS3 library should shape up a bit better too.

Too bad my 360 packed it in, but whatever. On the positive side, I save money.

When they finally bring affordable VR headsets to the everyday console user, then I'll be excited.  Combine a headset with the Natal, and you've got a WINNAR.

I had a VR headset 14 years ago for my PC.  It worked well enough 14 years ago.  Mechwarrior 2 was one of the few games that worked with it.  I had the head tracker mapped to cockpit view.  All the other controls were the normal.  It was a hell of a lot of fun, not only because you could look around the cockpit of your mech, but also because it was true 3D.

You'd think they've advanced enough, to make lighter, faster, higher res headsets for a cheaper price.

If Nintendo is smart, they can fix it. I'm pretty sure with another peripheral you can get the same effect as what the new PS3 controls will do.

All they'd have to do is add a camera. As far as the motion controls go though, they look about even. I was just saying this over at another forum, I've noticed that all the press previews of Natal mention that they played it in a well lit white room with a sofa and the TV and nothing else. So I wonder what kinds of issues will arise when it comes to setting up Natal in an average living room. It's probably nothing but I like to imagine.

Either way, Natal is definitely the better of the two new offerings; however, it seems unlikely to me that either will be able to do anything to Wii. All that may end up happening is that someone splits their user base and then has a bit of a sticky situation to deal with when it comes to catering to the Natal users so that they feel like they got their money's worth.

I personally hated the Nintendo press conference.. I dont like many of the games shown.. Mario has been largely overused, though still fun. Everything for DS is rubbish graphics. Its like going back to gameboy. That pretty much turns me off all DS games. And since hearing about Natal, i am no longer impressed by the Wii =P Ive always been a Sony fan over the others.. i suppose ill watch that press conference and see whether Microsoft or Sony has won my heart at this E3.

I just thought the speaker was boring.. Not nearly as good as Microsofts backdrops, and i feel they are trying to impress me with things that have been around for some years. Hurray! We get to upload our DSi photos to Facebook.

I hope i wont get flamed too hard by Nintendo fanboys =P

P.S I love Golden Sun and Mario, dont get me wrong..

The PS3 motion thingy seemed to be more "real" than the Natal Project, though if the Natal Project will work like they say then I would say that will be the better hardware.

Yeah, but. When have any of those games had poor sales, or better yet, when have they been bad? I mean its not like they churn out poor quality games for their most popular franchises.
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

If Nintendo is smart, they can fix it. I'm pretty sure with another peripheral you can get the same effect as what the new PS3 controls will do.

It's called the MotionPlus.  They demoed it at last year's E3 and pretty much does what PS3's remote does.  It's out next week for $20.  Or you can wait until July when Wii Sports Resort comes out, bundled with it.  There are a few games that are out or coming out this month that use it.  Virtua Tennis, Grand Slam Tennis, Tiger woods, Red Steel 2, and The Conduit

$40 for the wiimote.  $15 for the  nunchuck.  $20 for the MotionPlus. $75 per player.  Hrm.  That's a spicy meatball.

Still it raises a few questions.

Does Motion Plus detect how far the remote is from the screen when the controller is not directly pointed at the sensor bar? What about Motion Plus for the nunchuck? Have they even tried making a game that uses two Wii remotes with Motion Plus instead of using the nunchuck? And what about a camera peripheral that can pick up other signals that the current controls cannot give.

This could open up quite a few more possibilities for Wii games. At the same time, these capabilities will make it easier for developers so we don't have discrepancies in cross-platform titles besides graphics and processing power.

What about them? Yeah they could do that but they don't have to and they probably shouldn't. So Microsoft and Sony showed off their motion controllers, alright. Nintendo still has a firm grip on the mediocre motion controlled game genre and they have an install base that would take years for the other two to meet (they'd be starting from the ground up with their new controllers). Wait until next generation. We'll be able to see if the motion controls stick and everyone will be starting on the same foot if they do.

It's just like the Rock Band vs Guitar Hero thing. Yeah Rock Band is better (and the other motion controls may be better too) but Guitar sells way more units because of name recognition. Nintendo has the name recognition and because of that it's going to take a whole lot more than just releasing two (potentially) better motion control systems. Average Joe doesn't care how many jiggawatts of motion sensing awesomeness the other controllers can put out. Nintendo has the name and they have the ball.

Sony, in particular, looks to me like they'll have the worst run of it. Their motion control system is crammed between Natal and Nintendo in terms of functionality; add to that the fact that Sony is already in competition with Nintendo's DS and, while they are holding on, they're not making the same headway that Nintendo is making. Now they have to compete with Nintendo's established motion control format AND Microsoft's new format. Sony also doesn't have the best track record when it comes to advertising their product, something that Nintendo and Microsoft are both quite good at.

I kind of went off point but... eh, whatever. Don't mistake, Gec, I totally agree with you. Nintendo definitely SHOULD try to bring all of their components up to par with one another and make the best damn motion control system they can. But they don't have to and really, it may be a waste of resources to go down that path. What they have works and has beaten the competition handily.

But thats all subjective, I haven't liked a single metroid. And while i love things like Mario party and such. Mario galaxy was so easy it was boring.

Nintendo's Press conference was awful. My Random thoughts on the only thing's that were worth mentioning. Wii Motion Plus. I don't care, give me a game to care about then we'll talk. 4 Player Mario Brothers. I need friends to play this game. My girlfriend liked the DS game, so if she is interested we'll get it. U R MR. GAY 2 Super Mario Galaxy 2. Looks good, i'll get it, lets hope they pump up the difficulty. Metriod Other M.  OMG looks super cool!

There's some stuff I'm probably forgetting but overall I was bored. 5/10

Sony Press Conference: Random Thoughts. Uncharted 2. Hell Yeah, gimmy, gimmy, gimmy. MAG. 264 player game that looks like Bad Company, sign me up. PSP Go! Zzzzzzzzzz. Playstaion Network. Zzzzzzzz. Show me cool stuff for home, show me down-loadable games. And, what was with the videos not having the name of the games they're showing. I was like, "Hey that game looks cool what is? Oh they're not telling me!?! Well poop!" Modworld Racing. That looks cool, hope they get better weapons then lame missiles. (why can't any one get weapons right like Nintendo?) Motion Controller. Looks better then Wii motes but I wanna see some real games for it. God of War 3. Looks good, but I won't play it.

Sony started off strong but spent to much time on PSP go and some other stuff, but overall still good. 8/10

No I was just watching live feeds.

Here's my thoughts on the Wii Motion Plus Vs. Natal Vs. Eye Toy Argument.

Wii Motion Plus. This is what Nintendo promised us from the beginning, so I can't help but feel jaded. The Video that they showed at their conference that showed a guy with a samurai sword then the screen flashes and he's holding a Wii-Mote w/ Motion plus is the same freaking video from when they first introduced us to the Wii-mote, the one where the guy jumps behind his couch and shoots and with the girl chopping vegetables. (Almost like this trailer Sorry couldn't find the one I'm talking about.) The original Video sparked our imaginations and gave us hope that it would bring in a new era of gaming, but in reality we just make small flicking motions instead of full on swings. WM+ is too little, too late.

New Eye-Toy Controller(s).  This looks like a better evolution to the Wii-mote than the WM+. Sadly at the Sony conference all they had were tec demos and no real games. Pat makes a good point, "Nintendo still has a firm grip on the mediocre motion controlled game genre." The only games i see coming from Sony, for their motion controller, seem mediocre. A plus for Sony is that they say it's coming out next Spring.

Project Natal. A couple negatives for Microsoft is we have no idea when we will see this thing come out. Their video showed us games that looked like the next evolution of games for the Original Eye-toy. The games they showed looked like games, well souped up tec-demos, but I want more depth. The good thing about Natal is that you don't need a controller, has voice recognition (something MS has been working on for ten plus years now), can scan images... Natal is the only one that has potential of changing the way people play games in the future, and that is what attracts me most to it.

With that being said there's nothing stopping Nintendo form releasing five more attachments and have it work like natal, or MS from coming out with magic wands mimicking sony's eye toy. I think pat is right in saying that it won't matter until next generation when everyone starts out with fancy motion controller/camera scanners.

In conclusion: Pat's right!

They got Dominic Armato back as the voice of Guybrush.  Awesome.

And to add to ilikesanta, and to some extent, Pat...  Natal, and the Sony controller would not be coming out if Nintendo didn't pave the way with the wii-mote.  But competition is good.  Let's hope MS and Sony (and Nintendo) learn from Nintendo's weaknesses and make it better.   Which in turn, leads to opposing consoles also coming out with something new and better.

This generation of consoles seems transitional.  Not as big of a leap between generations.  The next generation is hopefully where it'll be.

Also just to spice things up a bit, don't forget about Ubisoft's camera for the Wii. I will say firmly (and with no evidence to back me) that it is nowhere near as complex as Microsoft's camera; however, it does so several similar things. I'd wager that Nintendo will take advantage of that by having Ubisoft release their camera first and to trying to get some first and third party games out for the new hardware. It's a perfect strategy to counter Microsoft's move toward the controller-less game console because it might be not Natal, but it's enough like Natal to rope in Average Joe Consumer without having to answer too many questions.

Yeah, it not the camera as much as the software analyzing the input.   But I'm sure the Natal might have hard coded methods on board, as well as a sensor for getting distance to the camera for full body tracking.  Think of TrackIR for the PC. Microsoft just went and took existing tech and put it together in one unit.

What interests me most about Natal is the speech recognition, and speech synthesis.  Having convincing speech synthesis would help out a lot with games like Fallout, where every other character you meet has the same actor doing the voice.  Like Will Wright saying the artistic content goes up, so does all of the audio content for doing RPGs with full speech.  They only devote a little bit of the resource pie to paying voice actors to record a few lines of dialog per character.
