Good luck, Notch. You were very likely a one-hit wonder but I and millions of others certainly got a kick out of it.
Cheers.

I'm just gonna take a moment to share some stories and memories. My timeline is gonna be all over the place so bear with me.
That tower there was a sample I made in the first release of Minecraft just so I had something to post in this thread. I had already played the game for a few hours dicking around and digging. Our thread grew to be immensely popular and I often saw that picture and others posted on articles and in other forums about the game just as it started to hit a bit of popularity.
I saw someone use it on /v/ once and it made me laugh.

After multiplayer was released I sent Notch this picture in an email and asked him if we could maybe get some colored blocks. He posted it on his at the time very much unread blog on tumblr and seemed to like the idea.
I remember around this time Celdur and I got together to heavily protect our public server from griefers. Since we were one of the few reliable servers we were very popular. Apparently Notch showed up while I was asleep or at work (dang it). Anyway this one time Celdur and I were super suspicious of this one dude, casino, and I had Celdur tailing him trying to act natural and stuff while I was up on the tower in the center watching everybody.
There were some frustrating times but it was a lot of new stuff to me. I had a lot of fun and I know you guys had a blast.

I had tried a couple of other skins but after I made Sanders here I never changed it again.

Somehow I had become a moderator on the Minecraft forums. I was later invited to the first few tests for survival multiplayer mode before release.
It was a massive buggy mess. Remember when our inventories weren't permanent, you couldn't store anything, and maps frequently corrupted out of nowhere?

Must have forgotten how to take screenshots for a bit. This was that time I had you poor bastards all flattening areas and making big 256x256 your own personal building zones as part of a bigger project that went nowhere fast 'cause I didn't know how to actually lead or direct. Thought I could. Learned a lesson. Haha.

I think my favorite maps were the ones where we limited ourselves to a small space and only explored outward to gather stuff we didn't have like trees or mob drops. Celdur, Pixxel, and I once settled on a small desert island and if I remember right it took a very long time to find trees for wood.
Another time when more of us were around we all settled on a jungle island. I still remember Oviraptor and LadyM's contributions to maps were always so neato. Very organic.

I met a lot of people through all this. Strengthened some friendships for sure. Got to test my wits as a moderator on a big forum. Watched the modding scene, which Notch frowned upon 'cause he didn't want the community splintered, explode in popularity. I've only played a handful of mods but I've heard lots of stories from Celdur about how crazy they can really get. Just about turns Minecraft into an entirely new game.

I'll conclude by sharing this one. It's not mine but it makes me laugh my ass off every time.

I guess I am done updating the server client then. I don't want any of Microsoft's ****.

This is so disappointing. Of anyone, it had to be Microsoft. It's like selling to EA.

I remember when I first started hosting the Faffington? server.

I was looking for seeds on the Minecraft forums to use to host my server and I found this seed that had tall cliffs and mountains along the shore. After scouting around on the map and screwing around with dynamite I decided to reset the map and host it. I had already at the time decided that I wanted to build my mansion on top of the cliffs next to the spawn. After a week of hosting I got tired and played some other games but I kept the server up 24/7. This was around the time I was getting ready for my 2 year trip to Japan.
After a few weeks of doing other things I went back to check up on the server and to my surprise I saw a lot of new buildings had popped up. Apparently several people from the forum had been visiting it frequently during the time the server had been up. The area near the spawn had even been named Faffington. It made me smile that so many people liked my server, even though I hadn't done much except hosting it. So I kept the server up until just 3 days before leaving for Japan, before shutting it down and sending the map to LadyM so that she could continue hosting the map.
I'm not sure if you guys are still using that map or if it's been archived for good. Too bad I never go to finish my mansion, it later got blocked by the new spawn when the host changed and I didn't have any OP powers so I could continue building on it.

I remember another time when I played with Gauph and Celdur and a few others on this seed that spawned you in the middle of the ocean. The closest island was a desert island with no food or trees so some of us had to live on zombie meat.  We had to scout for nearby islands just to bring back dirt and seeds to make our settlement livable. It was a fun survival experience until we got settled in.

Good times.

Hey Gauph, I'd like to thank you too! Thanks to you, a ton of us were among the very first people to play Minecraft. I think I was either the 70-somethingth or 170-somethingth person to ever buy the game. I still laugh whenever I see people talking about how they were early adopters and they "remember the days of indev" or whatever. It really does feel like a weird privilege, having been able to watch the progress of this game from the very beginning. Plus, you did a bunch of server stuff and that was awesome.

Thanks!

EDIT - A great memory of mine back when this game was young and Notch was personally updating the game on a regular basis, was when I was in a sort of Summer school (not quite, an Irish language thing) where there was no internet access for three weeks. When I got home, one of the first things I did was run and check how the game had advanced and what you guys had built while I'd been gone.

tell us some stories man

My story is the server! If any of you have maps I'm still trying to find things and add things that we think are worth saving. And things that aren't!! :D

I'd love to be able to track down the very first saves where we made smiley faces and stuff.

I remember when we limited map size and, much like all I do now is build roads, all I ever did at that time was build underground subways from corner-to-corner of our "huge" maps. Remember when we were finally able to adjust the size ourselves? :D

Anyway I'd always build these subways and there was actually a lot of skill to it because you needed to be patient and use a modular sort of system where you build chambers and walls to prevent flooding. The game still had infinite water at that point. Man... I wish we still had infinite water. Maybe only under bodies of a certain size. Anyway. I love building infrastructure. :U

**EDIT**
http://www.examiner.com/article/minecraft-is-the-best-thing-since-sliced-bread

An article I wrote. I'm very proud of this because I hold this up as one of the reasons why I am ****ing better than most games journalists. Go us! :D

This is why I want us to stay together and contribute and analyze the industry. Together we cover pretty much everything and have the experience to call things correctly. It's powerful!!

Yeah, I remember those pieces that would extend from the ceiling and up from the floor so flooding couldn't go all the way through.

There was one map, I think our second SMP map where we had a little forest on a mountainside and Patmanistan and a bridge or something. There was this big P on the mountain that someone kept messing with. Then Razonatair torched the woods and got everyone all mad.
Speaking of mad does anybody remember somewhere in the thread here where someone made like.. a dollar sign but someone blocked it by putting another thing in front of it and it started this big argument? I think it was Andrew Ryan and.. erops? I don't know exactly. I'd go look but holy hell this thread has a lot of pages.
Just FYI, and I dunno if he's here anymore or if he confessed or what, but we were always suspicious of Badger for griefing. It's water under the bridge now and I don't mean to spread ill will or anything. But man we were super sure.

I don't know where the picture went but there was that one time Celdur tried to make a mural from La Mulana but we just couldn't get high enough to take the picture. I guess we also didn't have enough block color variety to make it very striking.
Man, he was at that crap for hours.

Many good times have been had in this game.  I unfortunately don't have any screenshots from that old map from your server Gauph, where we were flattening everything, but I remember getting into all sorts of antics on there.  I had that big open mine that I was working on, and eventually some other guys decided to help out with it.  At that point I swapped my skin over to a suit and top hat and just played mine baron while listening to the Dig song from Pocahontas on loop.

Raz burning the woods was so great. Classic Raz.

I know I got mad at Rysworld or Little once for something like you described. Spent all this time finding a nice place to build with a good view. Set up a good porch to take in the view and did all this intricate work. Log back on next time and now there's a giant cube obstructing the entire view and filling most of the valley. ;D
