I think you've just had bad luck.  I tend to find diamond just as much as before.  Remember, they only show up below level 20.  Use the lava level at level 10 as a starting point.

Diamond shows up at level 16 and below. Start a 3m high branch mine at 13 and you will have no problem. I found 13 almost immediately.
You can probably find me, if you have pesterchum, under burningOrigins or cantankerousZealot.

Hmm... maybe I am digging too deep.

I usually dig until I hit bedrock, then backtrack to the level one above the uppermost blocks of that type.

But I have been having trouble finding diamond lately.

Wait. What? Diamond only spawns ten levels after lava? Son of a....
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

Sounds like by the time I wake up, Notch will have minecarts and boats working properly.
Or maybe I'm dreaming.

That reminds me, I had a dream that there were alternate portals. More like teleporters actually.
They were set up the same way but they had a yellow effect rather than the purple thing.
In this dream, I think SMP played very fluidly, like creative. All the single player survival stuff was implemented.

It was a good dream but very short.
Maybe I'll have more. I'm going to bed.

If this update is significant enough, I'll put the server up.

Currently, diamond (and redstone) appears in levels 0-19, where level 10 where lava starts.  I think it used to stop at 16, but the latest world gens seem to have them appearing up to 19.  I think the number of diamond spawns is the same, it's just spread out among a few more layers, which could be why they're slightly harder to find.  Just know that if you find redstone, you're down far enough to find diamond.

Gold starts appearing below 35 and Iron below 68.  Sea Level is 64. Bedrock appears from 0-4.

All this is confirmed using Cartograph's "Slice" feature on a world generated with the latest build.

I'm assuming a "level" in this instance is a height of one block?

Also I built a tower with a nether gate at the very top. I go through and appear in a cave in hell, and decide to dig up for the hell of it. The top of the nether is bedrock. >=I This said I now have volumetric asstons of hellstone so bully for me.

Here's the planned update for tomorrow-

Quote
General fixes:
* players and mobs in lava or fire no longer spam sound effects
* getting hit with a higher damage while recovering from a smaller one now works as intended
* lava flows further in the Nether
* zombie pigs eventually forgives
* added support for custom texture packs
* fixed duplicate buttons when resizing screens
* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
* fixed volume sliders now saving properly

Multiplayer fixes:
* hellworld=true no longer overwrites old save chunks. Player positions will still break if you switch it on a running server, though
* boats are now visible to other players
* minecarts move nicer
* fishing kinda sorta works, but needs more work
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* buckets work now
* fixed stairs being really difficult to destroy
* increased the timeout before “Took too long to log in”
* made it possible to ride carts and boats (pigs should work too..)

So Gauphastus, is this update big enough for you?
I need a new tag.

Sounds good to me, man. If Minecarts work, we can at least start laying down some rails.
Nice texture pack picker thing too. I'd like to be able to set an official server texture that users will have automatically downloaded and applied before entering though.

Just so we're all sorta the same I guess.
