How do I turn logs into plankwood? The wiki says I have to put it into a crafting box? What is this, I don't even... There isn't a wiki page for crafting boxes...

When you press I to open your inventory, you see a 2x2 box near your character.
You can place things into there to do some simple crafting. If you place a trunk block into it, it allows you to take out 4 planks.

If you fill it with four planks, you make a crafting table, which is a 3x3 block, allowing for more advanced building.

The only thing trunks are useful are is to be immediately processed into wood. And then wood is only useful for sticks after you make your first pick, or building stuff if you really want to. (Only wusses build with wood; stone and/or obsidian is better. Obsidian is for the awesome.)

Yeah! Homogeneity is what's really lame around here!
Yeah, [Kishmond] came back from Africa, but the ponies have him now.

You, sir, are a wuss. I rock that cobblestone-smelted-into-natural-stone look. Because coal is plentiful like crazy, yah know  :P

I enjoy using wood and even tree trunks because they looked nicer than the combinations of cobblestone and natural rock.

Also, trunks are actually very useful for hauling around large numbers of wood. This is really the only block that you can do so with. 64 trunk blocks turns out to be 256 wood blocks. You can't compete with that kind of storage capacity.

You can get out of pretty much any situation with a stack of logs and one of wheat.

You only need one crafting bench, after that there isn't a big point to making more, which is required to make a pick which means once you've made the pick you don't really need it anymore. And the inventory is already pretty big as is, especially if you store only what you need to build your design or whatnot.

Also you can use plank blocks to fuel fireplaces.
