7000 exactly Celdur! Nice!

Anyway, this is pretty cool, seeing as it is much larger. It would be very interesting to try and setup a game based on empire building using this setup. Plus, it looks like this guy is going to be putting a lot more into it, including farming! That's pretty awesome!

Press '6', plant it under water.

See that box of air around the plant? Thats because liquid is block based.

That will happen to ANY odd-shaped block, including stairs and pillars and thin walls. I can do strange hacks to render the block as if it was submerged in the liquid, but Id rather not since itd still stop water from passing through it.

How do I deal with this? Do I even have to?

He's got an answer form on the blog there. If anybody has any ideas how he could overcome this problem, send it in.
It'd help tons.

Playing this and I noticed that, while making a massive mineshaft at the bottom of the map, (that had become flooded with water halfway through) and later running into lava, the lava slowly kind of ran down the mineshaft , becoming rock as it touched the water. It completely turned the shaft back into rock.

Sweet.

Sounds like he has a plan.

I'm growing fond of this databyte idea

Ever since I started this project, Ive had the idea of an extra byte of data per block. Its not a very original idea, granted, but it gives me a lot of room to do cool stuff. Itd fully solve the water problem as I posted about previously as well.

The downside is that it doubles the size of the maps, and that level polling might get a bit slower, but the advantages are numerous.

Heres an example of the bit layout in this byte:

0-2: Liquid type. (8 values)
..0 = air
..1 = water
..2 = lava
..3-7 = reserved (oil? goo?)
3: isFlowing (needed by the liquid code)
4-7: Block shape (16 values)
..0 = full
..1 = half north
..2 = half south
..3 = half west
..4 = half east
..5 = half up
..6 = half down
..7 = slope north
..8 = slope south
..9 = slope west
..10 = slope east
..11 = pillar up/down
..12 = bar east/west
..13 = bar north/south
..14-15 = reserved

Blocks that can only come in one shape (the bushes for example) can use the last four bits for custom data, like keeping track of the age.

Age being important for the farming functions of course.

For those of you, like a friend of mine, who aren't totally fond of Java, the developer said this on the TIGSource forum.

Yeah, download client will come once it hits beta. I want to force people to use the applet for now since it's probably going to be the buggiest one.

So there you go.

EDIT:
Dude, I just learned that this is the guy that developed the client side for Wurm Online.
If this project sticks quite well, I believe we're in for a real treat.

We currently lack a HP system, so we are invincible.

So, will our maps be saved in the upcoming updates? I have been making a really good one and I want to make sure it saves.

Also, what do mobs do besides run around aimlessly?

Nothing yet. In a seperate game mode, we will one day have to fight back monsters and stuff from wrecking our farms, castles, and whatnot.
Maps can be saved now I believe.
Right? That was what his latest update was about. You just have to register.

I'm sure after everything takes off he'll decentralize this thing and it'll be more like Infiniminer.
At least I sure hope so.

Also, bit of an update here.
It's not currently in the game yet I don't think.

Today I accomplished (other than finishing up the loading/saving):

Sand and Gravel
Gold, Iron and Coal veins in stone
Trees with a trunk and a Canopy
Clouds two tiles above the maximum build height
Controller support (only tested it with an xbox 360 controller so far)

and

Absolutely no multiplayer code at all. Oops :D

You have a jawa? Think I could buy a couple droids off it? Maybe the sand crawler, no?

Also, imagine if this evolved into a hybrid of Infiniminer and Dwarf Fortress, where you used your blocks to build buildings and things, then did the chores (planting, harvesting, blacksmithing, etc.) with your friends on your server! Then you could fight back the local monsters and terraform the environment using tools! All it needs to improve upon to make it more than the sum of its parts would be an improved map system.

Or  am I just suffering from Spore-syndrome?

I think fish drown when they are knocked unconscious or pierced through the lung.
