Requiring any amount of diamond at all would probably make it expensive enough.

I've actually been wondering just how rare these materials are gonna be when instead of just one guy wandering/digging, you've got a half a dozen guys wandering/digging.
I'm really interested to see how the multiplayer part will work out with the game as it's currently balanced and what changes will need to be made.

I would really like it if mineral veins were larger but slightly rarer perhaps for the same total amount of material (or maybe more), but you don't have to mine out as huge of an area to find a single vein of 10+ iron ores.

Also, I've lost all the diamonds I ever found: 2 or 3 when I mined using a rock pick (not knowing that you needed an iron one), and a few more when I fell through the bottom of the earth. I have a lot of red dust, though, and some more that I could mine if I wanted to.

I actually managed to find a crazy vein of diamond.  6 or so I think.  I managed to stumble on another vein of 3 shortly later.

I manage to get a cube or so every game, as long as I play it long enough. Then again, I focus more on mining than anything else.

It's helpful to know where ore generates.

There are 128 levels.  Sea level is 64.  From my observations...

Coal generates at all 128 levels.
Iron generates at 64 and below.
Gold generates at 32 and below.
Diamond and Redstone generates at 16 and below

Variations exist of course, in that if a vein generates at its topmost level, the vein could stretch a few levels higher.

From what I can tell each chunk that is generated (a section of terrain 16x16x128 LxWxH) generates only one vein of diamond.  So, you could completely mine out a 16x16 pit all the way to the bottom (16384 blocks if started at sea level) and only find 3 or 4 diamonds.  That's if the vein didn't get completely erased by any caves that were generated.   And the funny thing is that most of the diamond I find is in caves.

I assume he does because he's like, the first guy to get the game ever. Clearly his chances are better than mine since I don't really care about Minecraft at all. But I want a multiplayer pass so I can lord it over the people that do care.

Clearly. Hahahaha!

I got in! Gauph didn't, as Notch was inviting people from IRC only. Only ~10 people got in. And it isn't really an invite, it's just a single password.
