Everyone, meet Everyone

"This is Prometheus Dockyards hailing SCSS Hawking"

"Captain Maxwell Mason receiving. Do we have permission to disengage from the Prometheus?"

"Boarding platforms are retreating. Platforms clear. You are ready to disengage. Gods' speed."

The PA crackled into life all over the ship. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain, Max Mason speaking. If you access the nearest viewing port, you can see us disengaging from the Prometheus. It'll be few hours before we reach our destination, so feel free to get yourself acquainted with one another. We're going to be working together for quite a while. Captain out."

Charles turned away from the viewing port. The Prometheus was out of shot, so he may as well get back to his work. Before he did, he looked around the room. The bed was currently folded up into the left wall. He scooted over his desk on the right wall, which was covered with little things he had found in various excavations. They were unidentified things, so museums didn't really want them. He had decided most of his free time on this ship would be to identify each and every one of them.

He typed a few notes into his journal, then gave up. Taking his captain's words to heart, he decided to go and acquaint himself with fellow crew members. He decided that the most important places to find were the cafeteria or galley or whatever they called it, and the laundry room. Oh, and the gym. He hated the thought of strenuous exercise, but artificial gravity played hell with joints...

Peter watched using the aft camera as the ship left the Prometheus dockyards and he tapped in commands to activate the FTL drive. After the ship jumped, he set it to Autopliot and went to the Mess Hall to get something to eat, and see what this crew was like.

Dalin stopped by a viewing port. Anthroids and crew members were hurrying past him. The mess hall was probably where most were heading.
Well, he could as well join them. His augmented right arm was making a loud buzzing sound, a thing he had never gotten used to, and the crowd was incredibly loud, but he still heard the FTL drive activating.
It was followed by a familiar lurch, the ship making the FTL Jump.
Dalin followed the stream of crew members towards the Mess Hall.

A hole opened in the ceiling and what looked like some sort of mechanical flower popped out.  SAMMY's vision scanned the ship.  It did a brain scan of all members of the ship.  It formed a net of their opinions of one another as regards to threat entities.  There were no majorities.  NO MAJORITIES flashed on its screen.  The mechanical flower said "NO THREAT ENTITIES DETECTED.  WELCOME.  I AM YOUR SECURITY ANTHROID MONITORING MEGACOMPLEX Y, OR SAMMY UNIT.  DO NOT BECOME A THREAT ENTITY."
Another hole opened in the wall and what looked like another mechanical flower (though rather different) popped out.  SAMMX scanned the ship for conflict.  NO CONFLICT flashed on its screen.  The second mechanical flower said "HI, I SEE THAT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ME BEFORE.  I'M THE SECURITY ANTHROID MONITORING MEGACOMPLEX X, or SAMMX UNIT.  IF YOU'RE IN TROUBLE, JUST WAIT FOR ME!  I'LL HELP YOU OUT!  HAVE A NICE RIDE AND DON'T MIND SAMMY-BOYS ARE ALWAYS CRAZY!  HA HA."  Both mechanical flowers dissappeared into the walls.

Peter took a little humor at what SAMMX said and yelled back at him, "That coulda been nicer, but I can't expect a security AI to do that."

Damian had just finished setting up his childhood relics on his desk just the way he preferred, when the captain's message sounded through the ship. He walked over to the window nearest to him, and looked at the dockyard fading away in the distance. He sighed, looking forward to a new trip, and new adventures. After a quick routine check of his computer screens to see if the engines could handle the FTL launch, he turned one of his model ships a little to the right, nodded, and then resolutely headed for the large mess hall, ready to meet the crew he'd be working with.

Reggie was at the bridge looking over the crew as they sent the Hawking on its journey into the unknown. The bridge was where he was at his best, he was in his element; unfortunately, it wasn't his bridge and he was forced to take a back seat. It ate at him a bit, he'd spent years at the helm of ships several times larger than the Hawking during his military career. But Reggie decided against continuing that train of thought, it was only going to distract him.

He glanced over at the captain as he finished his address. Reggie didn't know too much about Captain Mason. His file had some interesting things, most of it centered around his younger days with Space Corp. Reggie couldn't quite relate though and the long-standing rift between the people from "Corp" and the people from "Academy" didn't really help; as a member of the latter, Reggie was basically the captain's rival. He liked it that way though, it made things interesting and he suspected that Mason felt the same way; and besides, they had both spoken with one another for a while before launch and seemed to be on the same page, at the very least Reggie knew that Mason was competent.

There was a slight vibration against Reggie's thigh and looked down. His communicator was buzzing and as he looked up, he noticed that several people in the room had gotten the message. One of the maintenance crews was requesting a consult from command, it seemed that an airlock was malfunctioning.

"Oleander!" Mason called "I can't leave my post just yet. You know the IC-4 airlock design?"

"Yes sir." Reggie answered "Er... Captain."

"Great, you're consulting then." Mason told him "After that you're free to mingle, I'll get you on comm when we need you back."

Reggie saluted the captain and left the bridge on his way to check on the malfunctioning airlock. They weren't ten light years from home and there was already a problem... that didn't bode well for the mission as far as Reggie was concerned.

Herman finished unpacking his things into his room aboard the Hawking, and just placed a couple vials full of Venusian soil and placed them into the desk's drawer as the captain's message finished. Taking a sheet of paper and a pen, he steps out of his room and runs his finger across the map on the wall. Stopping his hand over the mess hall, he taps it a couple times before copying the path down on the paper. Making his way through the ship and eventually to the cafeteria, he puts away his paper and sits a table away from the ones already populated. Looking around subtly, he makes note of the others on board.

"Mr Saimin, isn't it?" said Hector, sitting down rather unsteadily at the same table. "We met at the orientation."
He gulped nauseously and gripped the tabletop tightly
"Don't mind me. I always get warp sickness after returning from a sabbatical. What was your specialism again?"
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Well, laundry isn't too far from my room, I suppose that's lucky, Charles thought to himself as the elevator descended. He was finding his way to the Mess Hall, or whatever the map had called it, from the gym. At this rate, at least he'd work up a good appetite.

He got out of the elevator and made his way down the final stretch of hall way. He had to dodge people coming the other way, watch out for the Custodial Bugs, little yellow robots that did the majority of cleaning work. Charles had heard about an experimental anthroid also on janitorial work, but had yet to see it.

There was a muted announcement about avoiding a certain airlock. Apparently, it hadn't closed properly after the boarding platforms retreated, but nobody should panic, it was being looked at. Charles didn't really pay attention. He could smell the food.

The Mess Hall already had, at a rough estimate, about a quarter of the ship's 200 crew members. Most of them wore blue and black. A few reds. Not many whites, yellows or greens yet. Charles got in line, taking note of the currently bare notice board. The only two notices were a map of the ship and a note that the Cinema was showing Twilight later. Hmm, he thought, might skip that one.

After he got his tray he went over to a table that already had two people sitting down. One of them was wearing a green uniform with a blue pip, and the other he recognised from reading the crew roster. A geologist from Venus. It was Hernan or something...

"Hi, do you mind if I sit here? I'm Charles, Charles Gibson. Archaeologist."

Dalin looked around for an empty table. He recognized some people's faces, though couldn't exactly remember who they were. One of them was Lieutenant Hector something, the Chief Scientific Officer.
He navigated his way through the masses and sat down a couple seats from Hector.

Reggie was standing at the end of a windy hallway with a few maintenance personnel. They were all staring uneasily at the unsealed airlock.

"The diagnostic isn't reporting back any problems?" Reggie asked.

"None!" a technician said "And I'm sure as hell not going down there to get a closer look, I've got family."

"We do have environment suits, throw one on." Reggie proposed.

"I told you, I'm not touching that thing at until the FTL drive is off." the technician laughed.

"Look... the outer door may be hammed open but the inner door is just not sealing properly." Reggie said "The locks are engaged just fine, it's not going to open. If the diagnostic is wrong that means that the door's mainboard is probably faulty and you wouldn't even need to back it up, just switch to secondary!"

"Hey man, Mr. First Officer... I don't care what you say, I'm not touching that thing for the salary I get. And we're not turning back so... unless you want to give me a raise..." the technician mumbled.

"Wrong answer, soldier!" Reggie hollered, hitting the technician in the chest and knocking him up against the wall "You get down there and you fix that door. And if you don't you can bet I'm gonna take you down there and throw you out myself! Move!!"

Reggie stood and watched as technician walked down the hall toward the door. The man stopped at the door's control panel and popped it open. He reached inside and flipped a small switch to activate the door's backup board and mumbled something to himself as the doors immediately closed and sealed properly. The technician walked the long walk back down the hall and avoided looking directly at Reggie.

"Good work." Reggie told him, pulling the man close as he passed "And if you ever try to pull something like that again... we're responsible for innocent people's lives here. Don't forget that."

Finished with his assessment, Reggie made his way toward the cafeteria. Since he didn't have to be doing anything at the moment, he decided to loosen up for a bit. He stopped at a mirror and checked himself over, he was looking good. Walking into the packed room, he made a beeline for the bar. There were several command personnel hanging around there and more than a few of them caught his eye.

"Officer on the deck!" he called as he stepped into the bar area, an uneasy silence fell over the people assembled there "Next round is on me, let's make this a good one!!"

A loud cheer rose up from the bar and the drinks began to flow.

After dropping her duffel bag onto the bed of her cabin, Rachel decides to go get something to eat. She needed to pick up her security baton and pepper spray, but that could wait until later.

As Rachel walks through the hallway, she decides a drink would be a better choice than a bite to eat. As she arrived at the bar, some fellow announced free drinks all around, and Rachel ordered her first vodka on the Hawking.
The best person ever.  She should have won the Peace Prize.

Herman started to respond to Hector but was interrupted by Charles's arrival. Nodding slightly after his introduction, Herman tuned back to Hector.

"I'm the head geologist for this journey. And by the look of your uniform, you must be one of our doctors."
