Spore -- Creating The Ultimate Species?
« on: March 16, 2005, 12:49:01 pm »
One of the most intriguing things I've heard about Spore is that the species you create will be uploaded to a main content server, and everyone who plays Spore will have a copy of your creatures on their own machine. This made me wonder two things:

1) Are your creatures going to be relatively passive while sitting on other people's computers? In the demo it sounds like Will's creatures explored the universe, but it wasn't clear whether or not his own home planet would someday receive a visit from other interstellar travelers, or whether or not they'd pass other UFOs from other people while flying around.

2) If your creatures are relatively active on other people's machines (they colonize and explore around also), I wonder if anyone will be able to create a dominant species? One that masterfully colonizes many solar systems on other people's computers as well?  Or a type of creature that is warlike by nature and attempts to conquer all that it comes in contact with?

I just love the idea that my little Spore offspring could be on other people's computers wreaking havoc. I'm guessing they'll build in some kind of balance or control mechanisms that would prevent this, but it's fun to speculate until we get more details.

Yeah. From my imagination and the information I have so far is... The online thing will probably just send peoples creatures to your PC for your games. And whenever you start from single player the computer will pick and choose which creatures will be in that certain game. From what I understand the speech Will Wright gave at the GDC only lasted for about an hour. So unless he played it (Spore) before the speech saved it at certain parts and loaded them seperatly to speed the process up. It sounds like it will just be a regular game. Like if your creatures survive that long in an hour you can get the UFO ability. I hope I made sense.

It would have been a pre set demo that was sped up, there is no way that you will be able to get the UFO ability in an hour otherwise people would get very bored very quickly.I am guessing we are talking days in real time (of continues playing) to get to that stage but not much longer then that otherwise they are at the other end of the scale where people get bored because it's taking to long.

It's a difficult thing to balance a game to fit in with everyone's idea of how fast they should progress.

In a recent interview Will Wright mentioned something about this, he never mentioned Spore the game, and it was an interview about the Sims. The way it comes across though is that he is trying this out with another game, and not The Sims.

Actually we’re experimenting with scales of time and space. The plan is that the time is going to be totally based on the zoom level. So your zoom level and your time slider are the same. If you want to speed the game up, you have to zoom out, if you want to slow it down you have to zoom in.
I don't know if this is going to be a part of Spore, but it could be interesting. I think I read somewhere that this was happening but I can't remember where or if it was infact my imagination after reading this old article (it is quite an old article, 2001, but still it sounds like a good way of getting around space travel over such huge distances and not breaking any laws of physics, while'st not taking too long to travel across the galaxy while the player gets bored). Here is the full article if you wan't to read through it.

Hmmm sounds like a dangerous page to read... Hmm think I'll try it anyway! Living on the edge and all that.

And aye, he was cheating jumping the era's/stages. Steve mentions it in his audio review of the meetings.

I think it will take longer for each stage to complete the requirements to get to the next one. Like the tidepool game will be relatively short, but the tribal era will take longer already and so on. Looks like the UFO period is the end stage where you can keep playing in that universe in whatever way you like.

Bah, I want to play… NOW! *sigh* Why did they post about this… why couldn't I only hear about this for the first time, when I see it laying on the store shelves? :D

It will be a long wait!
