A Tale of Civilizations [Community game] (OOC)
« on: April 01, 2009, 11:11:31 pm »
Ok, lets begin with the invite that I sent out to a bunch of people;

A Tale of Civilizations

In the game you controll a civilization by controlling the current leader/leaders of the civilization (in the case of a revolt one can choose to pick the revolt leader as the new leader to control). The game is turnbased with turns of one in game month and you can do any action the civilization would possibly be able to do during that time period. The control of military units and the way "royals" work is similar to how it works in Total War. The cities are viewed from above like an old Sim City game and you decide where to place buildings and such. The way the technology works is quite similar to civilization, but mostly it is not research but findings that lead to new technology. There are many more aspects of the game, I won't list them all here, but I can say that there is the possibility for a lot of micro management. It is also good if the players, if they for example start to build a wonder, paint at least a crude picture of what it looks like. This sort of designs is something the player can do for anything, if one player for example decides to start producing swords and do not paint a picture it would only be the most basic look and shape, so an involved player could also get advantages if they for example use a special design of shields that work better in a unit. In the same way the player can roleplay the leaders, if you for example RP a speech to the people that can change popularity, happiness, moral, etc. The players will be 5 selected players who I deem as people who can participate in a good way.

The turn works in the way that I announce the new turn and post anything happening in general, tell things that would be common knowledge such as the results of big battles and such. I then PM the other info of the individual civilization to player who controlls it who then post as much as they want in the thread. I do recommend you to post most things, since it is not that competitive, at least not in the beginning before any real fighting begin.

The game will start in late stoneage, but the timeperiods will progress much faster than they have done in human history, so one age won't be like 100 000 turns. I will probably start the game tomorrow or in a few days, depending on when I know who will play, so please reply to this and say if you are in or not. If your answer is no I need time to find a new player to fill your spot.

To those wondering if I will be able to stick with this and believe I will quit like I did with the feend game; I have thought about this game for a long time and constructed it so that I don't have to do nearly as much work as I had to do with the feend game in most turns. Some turns might pass by without a new pic (created by me that is), so this will probably be updated quite often. But since I now put more work on the players than it was in the feend game it really depends on you if this turns out well. If you feel that you won't contribute that much it is better to no join and let someone that would have that spot instead.

For further info on the game, read;

FAQ
(AKA questions by Hydro)

Quote from: Hydromancerx
1. Could you explain Total War? I have never played it.

Well, for the army movements it basically mean that you have a certain number of units (each with separate stats, equipment, moral etc.) stacked in an army that is often led by a general of some sort. That army then move in turns kind of like in civilization, though I won't show a marking as of how far they can go, the commands are more like "they march as fast as possible towards North" or "they march at normal pace towards the mountain pass to the West". With the royals it means that you have a family tree were you see all your royals, and each royal has got different characteristics which may affect the way he leads an army or the way he manage a city. Traditionally daughters are usefull for alliances by marrying them with royals from other nations. Keep in mind that not all forms of governments would have royals.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
2. As you have seen from my Nauceans and Caveman game i love to go into great detail. How can I make sure that I am not going to be left behind if i go into details about tech, culture, etc. For instance I could spend a long time going into detail and step by step in the prehistoric age wile other might jump ahead quickly skipping steps I might want to explain more. For example ...

Fast Person
Spear -> Archer -> Crossbowmen -> Musketmen

Me
Flint Knapper -> Scraper -> Obsidian Dagger -> Obsidian Spear

Well, first of all, when you invent the spear you don't say "invent spear" and then wait 3 turns. You command your hunters to experiment with using sticks while hunting. If you would command your hunters to make sticks with stone speartips attached with tendons and you haven't invented sharp stick spears, sharpening rocks and using tendons as rope then that would either take many turns or fail completely after a few turns. I will really try to balance this so that the ones that go into detail do not get a dissadvantage.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
3. What resources will we have access to? How specific are you getting? General resources like stone or wood? Or specific resources like obsidian, marble, etc.

Many resources. Different types of metal, different types of rock, different types of herbs (like herbs that can be used for medicine, herbs that can be used for poison, herbs that can be used for spice), fresh water, different types of mud, reed, etc. etc.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
4. What biome will be start in? What fauna and flora will be in the area? Or do we pick?

I have decided positions for the civilizations allready, and they are all quite balanced with close to fresh water and wood and none has a huge dissadvantage like being placed in the desert.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
5. Will there be templates like Sagan 4 species templates?

I will use templates for the stats of allmost everything. As far as I know as of now the players won't have to use any templates though, but if they for example chose to design special pots and want them to be in a certain way it is good to add a bit of text to go with the picture so I can then figure out the stats of that type of pot based on design, materials and level of technology.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
7. How will stats work for units, buildings, etc?

I have templates for almost everything with different parameters.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
8. So what should I do about needing to know results for minor things during a single turn? For instance lets say I hunt for deer how will I know how many I kill? In addition how will I know how much usable resources from it to say start skinning, tanning, butchering, etc from said amount of deer?

Also will explaining the process of say processing the deer (skinning, butchering, etc) result in better success? Or are we just simplifying and saying like the deer gave men x amount of meat, hide, sinew, bones, brain (for tanning), etc. I mean getting the most out of all the resources would be key to survival. to waist nothing and use all the parts for something.

Your men wouldn't know how to use all the parts to begin with, so the first time you would probably have to command exactly what to do with everything, but then that would be their routine and you could just say "hunt deer and use waste no parts". There will be stocks for everything you store.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
9. So like in earlier turns i would explain how its done and in later episodes I just have say a hunter, butcher, etc assigned to each job in the process so I don't have to explain it all? And if i improved upon it with a new technology to improve production i would say so right?

Yes, and yes.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
10. Would all this be posted in the thread or a PM?

Yes.

Both?

You chose what to put in the post and what to put in the PM.
(Though try to put as much as possible in the post).

Quote from: Hydromancerx
11. How will we know how much say food is needed or how much trash and waist is building up in the village? Also how will we know how happy people are? How healthy they are?

There will be stats for the city how many are without food, how healthy they are, how happy they are etc. etc. The trash and waste would the player decide where to place, if they place it in the city I guess it would show in the overview picture. You will recieve all of your stats in a PM from me after each turn.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
12. So how would things work. Lets say i have access to reeds and berries resources. Could I say "They make baskets out of the reeds and collect berries in them." and then it would be true or next turn i see if I succeeded?  OR do i need to make baskets the 1st turn and then collect the next? Because it would seem that waiting a whole game month to see if i succeeded would be wasting a lot of time.

You would get to know if they succeded the next turn, and yes those workers could probably do more than that in a month. Such things as gathering berries would almost allways succed if they allready know of berries in the area, but if you don't it COULD take the whole month to find any, or you might even fail at that. Succed ratings at such as making baskets depends on how well your people are used to making that (if they have created 100 reef baskets before they would have a very high succes rate), how good reed you've got (there are techniques to make reed more durable for example, and rotten reed wouldn't be good for making baskets) etc.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
13. Can we domesticate things? For instance if I look for a wolf den and take their babies, then breed the most docile of them I could eventually create dogs from them? And possibly even breeds of dogs? Since dogs age faster than humans and its a month by month game it should be possible. Right?

Yes to domesticate, and yes to breed, but it would take a long time. Not as long as it take in reallity, I have allready made technology advancement much faster so most other things that really take many years are faster too. I haven't got a set list of things you can and can't do, though I have tried to think through most basic things at the beginning, it is more like when someone say a command I will ask myself if it is something that should be in the game. Most things you could do in reallity is in the game, but some things like saying "attack the other village and rape them" I would refuse, since that would be so straight forward bad taste.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
14. Will the leaders and tribe members age? Will tribe members breed in normal time. For instance human gestation of 9 months.

Yes, the leaders age naturally, and they would get children after 9 months. With the people there is not a set list over each citizen (since it is possible we get to more than 10 000 citizens after a long while) so they basicly have a pop increase rate that depends on a lot of things. There is also an avarage age in each settlement that can affect how many soldiers you recruit for example, and if many soldiers are recruited and leave the city then the avarage age would rise.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
15. Will we need to keep track of every tribe member? For instance age, gender, family linage, occupation, etc.

No ofcourse not, "the people" aren't treated by the game as individualls in most cases, but there will be things that show how many works with a set thing though. (Like constructing a well: employs 8 people.)

Quote from: Hydromancerx
16. Do we have to follow human history on Earth or can we develop new technology paths, religions, etc? For example advanced technology coming earlier because of inventors like Di Vinci inventing them years before they come to pass but actually making them when they are 1st invented. For example developing steam power at the classical age? Or discovering flight via hot air balloon way before the industrial revolution?

Instead of having every technology being very dependant such events as the industrial revolution they are dependant on technology that would ease the development of that technology. To discover the crossbow without discovering archery would be very hard for example, and some sort of machinery would also make it much more possible of you succeding in inventing a crossbow.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
17. So its not impossible to take an alternative path to discovery such as how diffrent cultures around the world came to the same discoveries through diffrent means.

No, it is instead very much possible that everyone will take different paths.

Quote from: Hydromancerx
18. In addition could you give an example of what a post should be like? There are a few ways I have through of how to post based on your past e-mail and I wanted to know if I am understanding ok.

I think of it like;

Code: [Select]
[Post in the thread]

(you start with posting all the info of your civilization that you feel like sharing (I recomend to share as much as possible as it gets more fun that way.))

I command the captain of the guard to take 10 soldiers and escort a diplomat to Alexandria.

I command the building of a new temple. Commoners and slaves shall be asigned as builders.

I announce that games will be held to honour Bahl all month in the following speech at the Big Plaza;

"People of lower Egypt. It is with mixed feelings I stand here today, for many of our soldiers have fallen in battle in the south. But yet, victory now lies closer than ever and it won't be long untill we march against the Numdians. Spring is coming and you can feel Bahls compassion in the warm winds, and we shall not loose his favor. From the day after tomorrow, untill the new moon games will be held in the city in honour of our beloved god. Now go and work, work with willpower, for when the games begin you can relax and you can rejoice that it is us, and not our enemy, that is the true nation of the gods."

Code: [Select]
[PM to me]

General Khriljhs army shall circulate the city, trying to avoid being noticed.

The others lay siege on the city and construct two siege towers and a battering ram.

All armies, including general Khriljhs shall attack at the same time, preferably at nightfall so that their archers can't tick off the soldiers.

And that would be enough, you can do more however and you decide how much to put in a PM and how much to put in your post. I will not post any information about the individual civilizations except that which everyone would hear by word of mouth. (As you might understand the general things I post will be more plentyfull the higher the infrastrucure is and the more the civilizations trade with eachother.)

I like teal. I don't care if its a disadvantage.

EDIT: Ok I have a question....

Is inbreeding allowed because even with 4 females and 4 males eventually you will get inbreeding.

Teal-G1 + Teal-G1 = Teal-G2
Red-G1 + Red-G1 = Red-G2
Pink-G1 + Pink-G1 = Pink-G2
Green-G1 + Green-G1 = Green-G2
Teal-G2 + Green-G2 = Teal-Green-G3
Red-G2 + Pink-G2 = Red-Pink-G3
Teal-Green-G3 + Red-Pink-G3 = Teal-Green-Red-Pink-G4

G1 = Great Grandparent / Sibling /     1/2 Same DNA
G2 = Grandparent / 1st Cousins / 1/8 Same DNA
G3 = Parent / 2nd Cousins /  1/32 Same DNA
G4 = Child / 3rd Cousins / 1/128 Same DNA

Note that in the "Sims 2" 3rd cousins can marry. So I am assuming that eventually we will need to have all the tribes inter-marry if we want to have them survive. Note that 3rd cousins is still considered inbreeding even though historically it has been done. And really 3rd cousins are probably more like strangers than family by that point according to what I have looked up about this to try to find an answer to how many generations it takes to have no-inbreeding.

This is all very interesting and quite awesome! I was just wondering though, would it be possible to have multiple people controlling the same civilization? In this way the number of actual civilizations stay the same, the number of people participating increases, the amount of content actually being produced is also increased, and it lessens the load on each person. A possible way of instituting it would be that either different people control different 'nobility' or 'senators' or something similar depending on the government type.

I'm just wondering because I think it would be interesting to have teamwork or infighting going on inside the different civilizations. That could really add another element to the game. But I like this either way!

I like this idea but I think everyone should start out as separate tribes. Then over time some can merge together or even split back apart. This way we at least get more genetic diversity with each player having their own non-related male and female.

I'm affraid that would be TO much work on my side. Remember that I have to do many pics and write the texts, calculate the stats etc. I have had ideas about the people controlling certain tribes that rise and fall like in the burke game, anyone can post what they should do and what gets the most posts is what is done (I thought of this mainly so that I do not have to much power over what happens).

@Hydro: Royals can marry other people than royals. There are no set names and personalities in the upper class no more than it is in the lower class, but when you have a son or daughter at the age where she can be married and asks for suitable husbands there will be plenty of rich shop owners, generals, noblemen etc. in a later stage in the game. In the beginning when the city isn't more than a few houses the nobility has to take people of a lower descent. When you marry someone that person becomes a royal too, so it if very profitable (and their kids do too).

No Hydro, that is only the royals, sorry for not making that clear, but I have stated that the people won't be treated as individualls, I won't have a family tree for 10 000 people later on in the game.
