Monsters vs. Aliens
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:54:20 pm »
So, what do you all think of the movie? I just saw it, and I have to say it was very enjoyable, with a truckload of references to The Fly, The Blob, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Creature From the Black Lagoon, An Inconvenient Truth, Superman, Godzilla, Mothra, and dozens more. I think casting Stephen Colbert as the President was ingenious, as were several of the jokes, including the one where there are two giant red buttons side by side in the control room: One launches all USA nuclear missiles and the other prepares a cup of coffee. (Spoiler)When President Colbert accidentally pushes the nuclear launch button, he says, "Time to wave the white flag and head into the bunker. We'll check back in 500 years. Now who wants to freeze my head?" However, I also feel that the storyline didn't have much depth, and the exposition was sometimes too much or little. It also didn't really need to be in 3-D, with not many impressive 3-D effects, the best being a paddle ball bouncing in your face. Although the animation itself was very good, with impressive special effects.

What do you think?

I came, I saw, I went back to bed.

They make one single reference to an Inconvenient Truth (as a joke), and Colbert isn't in character.

Ignorance at its finest!

I'm not "green" as some would call it, but I don't instantly hate something for mentioning Global Warming. That being said, I loved Wall-E.

Yeah but global warming was hardly a central theme of Wall-E, Wall-E was about not becoming over reliant on machines and automation.

You didn't think the story had much depth? What were you expecting from an Easter/Spring break kiddie movie?

I'll probably be seeing this some time over the next two weeks...

I saw this day before last. I thought I would be screaming for mercy two minutes in, but I actually liked it. (We were babysitting our friend's hyperactive kid and were trying to keep him out of the house as long as possible.)

Saw this yesterday in glorious 3D at my city's new 3D cinema.

Judging from the trailers, I wasn't really looking forward to it. Thankfully, I was mistaken.

Spoilers maybe ahead.

Yes the story wasn't very deep, but as I said before, I didn't really expect much.

Any time BOB said or did anything was very funny, particularly regarding the jello.

The War Room scenes were funny, as well as President Colbert's kickass keyboard solo. Why don't I watch this guy?

And Grangan, the Inconvienent Truth reference was one line. Dr. Strangelove had more presence in the film.

I just saw this. It was pleasantly decent. I actually felt this was going to be lame as well.

Saw this yesterday. Had moderate expectations of it and was a bit disappointed to be honest.

The movie really didn't do the premise justice, since there wasn't nearly enough cold war and monster movie nostalgia.

The slapstick was fairly decent but the jokes meant to appeal to the adults in the audience were so labored (Especially that silly 'inconvenient truth' reference) they mostly fell flat.

Oh, and the heroine was a whiny beeyotch :P
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

I was wondering why they never referenced her magical self-dying hair.

White Haired Pretty Girl.

On further reflection, I have a sneeking suspicion someone involved in the filming is a macrophile. (Not sure why that needed spoilering. Just playing around with it.)
