Kralizec's critters
« on: February 19, 2009, 11:31:04 am »
Here's a list of some scary or deliberately ugly monsters, I made them because I was getting sick of seeing so many cute creatures in Spore. All criticism is welcome.

Xenomorfo

Needs: Cute & Creepy, Insect Limbs update
This is the only one that's not based on my original designs. This is (or pretends to be) a xenomorph like those in the Aliens movies.
(Original design by H. R. Giger)

Podocephalle

Needs: Cute & Creepy
This one actually has a background story, but it's so long and full of references to other races it would be better to explain it in a new topic about the cosmogony of my Spore galaxy (maybe in a future I'll do). Long story short, Podocephalle originated as mutants from one of the oldest races in the universe, but were so evil that all of the other races allied against them. Only a few of them remain in a remote planet (called Anatema), where they capture all landing explorers and torment them in what they call a "torture circus", keeping them on the verge of death for years while the monsters watch with fascination and joy their desperation.

Umbra

Needs: Cute & Creepy
(Seems I can't get the picture right; this guy should be shiny and look like it was made of oil)
A creature made of pure darkness. I'm reserving it for when GA comes out; they'll be some kind of devils, summoned by the bad guys.

Sonar

Needs: Cute & Creepy
These guys use echolocation to hunt their prey. Many races tell stories of the Sonar to their children (detailing how they wander around the forest at night, attacking anything they hear) so the kids learn to go back home before it gets dark.

Pollaco

Needs: Cute & Creepy
Nothing more than what you see. A blind, fat, huge and disgusting chicken-like monster with no feathers. Grotesque.

Bonus! (Not intended to be ugly, just weird)
Caballejo

Needs: Insect Limbs update
A horse-like animal evolved from crustaceans in a flat, sandy planet.

Another one of the "disgusting" variety...
...and Zombo was his name-o!

... Skin? What's that?

(Needs both C&C and the Insect Limbs update)

I finally managed to get a few good screenshots of the thing, front & side so people can really see how its body structure is:

And this is where it spawns, the Umbra Well:

I'm also proud to announce that I've started creating other "unskinned" creatures after Zombo, and they will all appear in my first series of Galactic Adventures mission planets, a collection of post-zombie-apocalyptic stories named "Extinction Zone".

All of the creatures below need C&C. Some of them may not have the same name as here, or their in-game names might differ from the ones in their PNGs (yes, I renamed them).

Tumoret

Tumoret is only the fleshy thing with blue eyes on top of the head. These guys are parasitic: they infect the bodies of other sentient creatures, move to their brains and enslave them for life. The downside is that they need to wear extremely complicated devices to avoid breaking their own necks.

Cerebrado

This one was made in-game, not just going to the editor.

Diabloid

I'm not especially happy about the way this guy turned out, except for the face... I think it truly looks satanic:

Cerebrado is certified Nightmare Fuel.

I also like how Tumoret looks kinda cute, and then you realize it's sucking the autonomy out of the creature that's wearing it. :D

Wow, I'm away for a few months and somebody steals my thread! (Just joking ;D)

Epididymus, an experiment in alien anatomy:

Trying a new concept for a neck, inspired by human anatomy.

Needs C&C

Guàrdia Infernal (Hell Guard)
I met somebody (at another forum) who was in need of creatures for an adventure set in hell, so I came up with this. It's supposed to guard some hellish gates.

Needs C&C

Atl
Evolved in a planet that's almost completely covered by a huge ocean, these guys come from animals that used tho hide in the low, sandy atolls to avoid their predators. Underwater, they bend their necks backwards, lining their ellongated heads with their backs, and swim with their fins in a manner similar to dolphins.

Obviously, hydrodinamics are extremely important when designing their armors:

And now some cutesy...

Kri
A pet bred in several galaxies. Origin: unknown.

They were originally created for a "rescue the Kri!" mission, but I liked them so much that I think I'll keep making Kri varieties; so I'm putting them here in case anybody wants to make their own kinds of Kri. They're small enough as is, so there's no need to shrink them for adventures.
Needs C&C, already available in 5 colours.

Irk
Just in case you're using them in a mission, here's the Kri's natural enemy:

Needs C&C

Tips for customizing your own Kri:
-First you must add an extremely small mouth (oriented towards the front), and then put the head (really a bifurcated arm) on the same place. Otherwise the mouth will stick to the lower part of the head and screw all animations.
-Every minimal body/extremity alteration will make the head's shape change. To fix this, you should first reduce the head's main joint, move it down (the most you can), move the ears a bit up, and re-enlarge the main joint again.
-I reccomend not to change the colour in the 2nd tab of textures since the eyes will become two-toned and the creature will then look creepy and/or stupid.

LOL

A few more creatures:

Flechette

A generic enemy... I think the teeth make it look aggressive.
Requires: C&C, Exoskeleton Limbs

IHM

Another disembodied brain, but this time on top of its own small robotic body!
Requires: C&C, Mecha Parts

Yumn
A race that mostly use Augmented Reality to interact with their technology. The "tail" in the back of the head is a connector for private wired interfaces (vehicles, direct brain-to-brain pseudo-sexual connection etc).

Requires: C&C, Mecha Parts
<- PNG phail

And we'll end with something cute:
Wix
A hard-working race found in many empires' starports. Seems like they can't live without being continuously busy.
Nobody knows why, but the stripes and whirls on their skins seem to change colour depending on their jobs. Also, nobody has been able to understand their weird language (or find a bilingual Wix for that matter), so captains must interact with them via simple gestures.

Requires: C&C

Nice coincidence, I actually took these ideas from Neuromancer, Shadowrun (pre-4th) riggers & deckers, and some 80s/90s movie which name I can't recall now (it was about this "direct brain-to-brain pseudo-sexual connection" through a biological device that kinda looked like an intestine, I think it was connected to a hole in the lower back... In case anybody else finds the name, tell me).

Well, you can't blame me, it is pretty similar. And with it being the most recent thing to steal use the concept (and it was the only thing I thought used it), I thought it came from that.

More critters for your game!

Emperor Sea Strider

From Wayne Barlowe's art, later appearing in Discovery Channel's "Alien Planet" series.
Take a look at this video, around minute 3:40...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZeYYyotOTk
Requires C&C.

Daggerwrist

Same origin, low on detail.
Requires C&C.

Niktan Assassin

An assassin captain for all your stealthy adventure needs!
Requires C&C and GA.

Nano-Animals: Savannah

Plushies for Africa! The set is still incomplete, but I intend there to be the animals you need for a T3 planet.

They all require C&C.

Assim

Genetics gone wrong.
Requires C&C.

Erugga

A caterpillar!

Tentaklan

Asymmetry test #1. A generic alien.

Fongo

Asymmetry test #2. A walking fungus. Each unit is composed of several joined individuals.

Imitera

Asymmetry test #3. This creature looks like a tree to avoid its flying predators.
Requires C&C.

Somn

Dunno what was I trying to do here. I guess I was bored.

Oo

Time to get out of the egg, my friend...
It's a shame I got this pic with the eye closed. Looks way cooler when it's open.
Requires C&C.

Sorry. I really like the plushes!

Indeed, I was originally making a Caterpie, but some problems (the inability to paint the head thingy red) made me re-think of it as "just a caterpillar". I'll keep trying.

BTW, same technique:

Kralizec, your stuff are the shiz! ;D 8)

I especially like what you did with the ESS and Daggerwrist.

You really managed to disturb me with the Assim, y'know? ;) :)

Man, that walking fungus is a thing of beauty, if I do say so myself! You really managed to catch the feel of it! 8) :)

And the plushies are just soooooooooo cwute! x3 :3

-snip-

Highfive!

*jumps into the air in an attempt to reach Graz's hands, but due to our height differences, only manages to reach toenails*

I especially like what you did with the ESS and Daggerwrist.
The thing is... I'd like to add more detail to ESS, but I would have to cheat on the complexity meter (and that's against my principles).
Atleast I managed to put a pair of mouths insinde the legs so it would feed through its feet, just like in the series.

You really managed to disturb me with the Assim, y'know? ;) :)
I think there's some psychological mechanism, deeply rooted inside our brains, that makes us find asymmetry disturbing. I'm glad I managed to arise that feeling on somebody.

Don't mention it. :)

Really?! Awesome! ;D

Too bad there's no metamorphosis in Spore. Making some nymphs would've been awesome! :-\ 8)

Bowngbowng

I love the way this guy animates in the editor... It walks around on its knuckles like a gorilla, but if you add anything to the arms (like a few horns to make big claws) it'll start hopping like a kangaroo.

Bowngbowng is actually composed of only 2 vertebrae and a huge, complex arm that acts as its skeleton... In fact, the entire visible surface of the creature is the arm.
I've been using this technique on most of my creations, and I've ended up writing a small tutorial about it. It's in Spanish (my 2nd language) but the pictures are pretty self-explanatory, or so I think. I call it the "limb volume" or "arm-critter" technique, and it's actually very easy once you get a bit of practice.
Here's a link to it: http://foro.capitalsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=169&t=20689
In case anybody wants me to translate the tutorial, please let me know.

More limb-creatures Precious originally made for that tutorial (but found them too complex for newbies):
[Precious]Haven't checked the requirements for each, Precious figure most (if not all) will need C&C.[/Precious]

Passeret

Just a little bird who can't fly.

Polp

Your average cephalopod. Tastes great.

Yeti

Yep, an abominable snowman.
I put it in a polar planet and couldn't find it, until I made it stand still in front of a cliff
--->

Necrobi

A messenger from the dead.

Mercader (Merchant)

Half worm, half Furret (or ferret, if you're not into Pokémon), and all profit! A generic wandering merchant for your adventures.

I love them all! ;D :)

Polp reminds me of the fisherman's wife, if you know what I mean... ;)

That Yeti's so cute! ;D Cutest of them all, in my opinion. :)

Well it really isn't an official holiday here anyways, more like a school yard game. But the internet in general likes to observe it.

Yeah, things will be back to normal tomorrow.

Attack of the huge pictures!
Guess who's back with some weird creatures...
I just reinstalled Spore, this time on Linux (via Wine), so everything should work with 1.0 and no expansions.

Azza

The cutest demon I managed to get with my Necronomicon.

Gawm

A branching creature. People from another forum told me they liked the way it walks.

Sau Gua

Ewww... It's supposed to store lots of fat to survive during its world's drought station. Sau Gua are incredibly dumb, but also extremely aggressive.

Red Terror

Texture errors are produced by Wine, and shouldn't be visible in your games.
I like how the face turned out, I think it looks truly evil.

Face of Terror would make an excellent Hauntar. :P

Anyway I like Azza. It so adorable. :3

You'll never know why.

Aaaaand... 4 more, each in a different style!
I'm still having some trouble with textures, so everything will look way better in you game than here.

Sonark

Its head acts as a resonance chamber, allowing it to sing better (and louder) than other creatures.

Tenebret

Evil henchmen summoned by dark mages trying to rule the galaxy. Kinda like my old Umbra, but weaker and a bit retarded (on the other hand, they're cheaper and can be summoned en masse).

Kaomani

According to their legends, the gods shaped the Kaomani from reddish clay, and baked them under the sun of the desert before filling their empty heads with the water of life. A ceramic race.

Mostacchio

Although looking at him might suggest otherwise, the Great Mostacchio is actually the all-powerful ruler of a galactic spice-smuggling mafia.

B-but, he's so cute and squishy! D :

;)

Gotta like the Kaomani the most though, as far as this set is concerned! :)

What are those "hairs" for, though, if I might ask? :)

Yes, it's made of those square plates with a non-osseous joint in the middle, I think their name was "tablets" or something like that.
And notice the guy doesn't even have eyes, the fake red glowing eyes are just a couple of those "heycorn" parts.

BTW, malson means "nightmare" in my language. I think it fits him perfectly, just imagine this guy slowly crawling out from under your bed while you're asleep.

Oh, those 2x1 set of plates usually used by Maxis creatures on their joints?

Yup, I think they are called tablets.

And notice the guy doesn't even have eyes, the fake red glowing eyes are just a couple of those "heycorn" parts.

Ah, yes, "heycorns"! ;D

Back before C&C was released, it was the only part that most managed to make the illusion of purely tinted eyes.

And that, is why I've kept a battle axe under my pillow ever since! ;D

Oh, and I just remembered. He reminds me of a certain Australian spirit that looks pretty much like him, except for a much moe stick-like frame and a mushroom-like head.
