Homemade Kaiju
« on: January 25, 2009, 10:10:02 am »
I myself am a huge Godzilla fan. However, I've always felt that Toho's famous line of Kaiju, such as Godzilla, King Ghidora, and Gamera, all had their each unrealistic flaws. So I've made my own Kaiju that are at least somewhat plausible.

(Yes, it is, in fact, possible for a creature to breathe fire.)
So what do you guys think?

Those are nice.

But what bugs me is that you can breathe fire through some sort of chemical reaction, but fireballs?

For things so huge, they seem pretty light.

My estimation for the weight of Octuarga gave me some 55000 metric tonnes. Which is more than 11000 times the weight you have, since metric tonnes are bigger than imperial.

Of course I had to convert his height to metric and estimate his volume, so it's probably quite far off what he'd actually weigh. But, still, he probably weighs more than an unloaded articulated truck.
Not a winner anymore.

Huh. I just took the weight of a Northwestern Pacific giant octopus and multiplied it by how much larger Octuarga is. But I guess I'll go with what you say, not what i wrote down.
Oh, and madis, those are technically giant flaming balls of spew. He does that when his stomach is full. Otherwise, he just breathes fire.

Probably better to estimate its volume, then multiply it by the density of water.

If Octuarga is resonably spherical, and his height is about 62 metres, then his radius is 31 metres. Volume of a sphere is 4/3*pi*r(cubed)

Plugging the numbers into that gives me approximately 125000 cubic metres (which is different from what I had last time, since I didn't notice how spherical he was and did it differently)

Since the density of water is pretty close to the desnity of flesh, we can say that since 1 cubic metre of water = 1 metric tonne, he weighs about 125000 metric tonnes.

Soooo yeah. You underestimated a little.
Not a winner anymore.

Every time something doubles in size its volume (and therefore probably also weight) more than doubles.

Its pretty easy to see when you take into account that the volume of a 1x1x1m cube is 1 cubic meter but doubling the size of the cube to make it 2x2x2m gives you a volume of 8 cubic meters.

Pahrandalake's name actually comes from the Farsi word paranday, which means something that flies. And I agree that Pahrandalake is the best, although I like Colossis.

WAIT A MINUTE! If Pahrandalake is a good-natured monster, then wouldn't it defend Iran instead of attacking it?

It's name comes from a Farsi word. Farsi is the official language of Iran. Maybe Iranians woke it up and it attacked Tehran, but then it calmed down and defends Tehran now.

Since Pahrandalake breathes fire, the Iranians use him to power a thermal power plant and provide electricity to millions of poor, starving Iranians.
Which is so much more cool than using him as a flame-spewing WMD.

Now you just need to get Grazony and Operaghost in here.

that obvious?  :D

I think my favorite description is 'really really mean'  ;D anyway, great kaiju, omegatripod, I really like them!

I have two separate 'universes'
my first main kaiju is surudago

my other hero is just...a guy that grows giant, he never really gives himself a 'fancy' name

I didn't want to flood the thread with pictures (especially not after I put a lot of them in the doodles and sketches thread), so here are my main galleries...most of surudago's allies/opponents are uploaded (first link), the other is a bit sparse, I haven't uploaded much for the big guy (second link)
http://operaghost21.deviantart.com/gallery/#Kaiju-Surudaverse
http://operaghost21.deviantart.com/gallery/#Kaiju-Our-Heroverse

edit: btw...best thread EVER.

well, in your defense, jet jaguar IS the suckiest thing to ever come out of toho...but what do you have against mechs? and don't even say realism, because a living creature the size of a kaiju is just as improbable...

Even more impossible than a robot that big, by a long shot. So maybe a robot that size would take engineering and materials which we don't currently posess, but monsters that big with those sorts of proportions is totally beyond possibility (at least on this planet).  ;)

Double Postastic!

Okay, here it is.

And here's the explanation.  This is a scene from a dream I had freshmen or sophomore year when I tried keeping a dream journal.  I was on this alien planet walking through these walkway tubes when the section in front of me gets ripped away by a giant mouth, to reveal this bad boy outside tearing up the place.  Then Master Chief shows up out of nowhere and launches this thing that looks like and abstract wiffle ball with bigger holes into the creature's gaping mouth.  As it closes its mouth its body begins to ripple, but that's all I remember.  The creature probably blew up.  I Guess I woke up or something.

So the creature is this giant purple scaly lizard thing, with either six or eight legs.  When it closes its mouth it looks more normal, like the head of a giant toad.
Probably not a Goat, either.

Hey, remember this?

I would love you forever if someone (I dunno, maybe opera) could draw a better version of this.
Probably not a Goat, either.

          Presenting the Chikyujin!

Somewhere in an alternate timeline, there is an Earth where the point of difference is when terrestrial arthropods developed lighter, stronger, more flexible exoskeletons and highly advanced respiratory systems, which allowed them to fend off the amphibian invasion of Earth's primordial shores.

In that timeline, for some arbitrary reason, fly-like creatures became the most dominant of all arthropod types.

One hundred-thousand years ago, 10 foot tall mosquito-like kaijin started gaining sentience. They are mostly plant eaters, with tree sap, honey or fresh nectar forming the bulk of their diet. Though, they do drink blood, which is where they get their protein. This usually comes in the form of giant caterpillars, which they began farming when they reached complete sentience.

Fifty-thousand years ago, they became the dominant species on their entire planet and spread their dominion all across it's surface. They called themselves, the Chikyujin.

Two-thousand years ago, they formed a global democratic monarchy lead by a "lord" which can be voted into and out of office. Their government is mostly centrist and has the esteemed quality of having almost no corruption due to their race's high sense of respect for each other, and life in general, and an as of yet immature ability to sense the emotions of other sentient beings.

By present time, they possess tech very similar to ours, except when it comes to certain fields.

They are quite ahead of our time in terms of nanotechnology, which drastically reduces the morbidity and mortality rates of them and their domesticated animals. Same for energy production, which allows them to build massive infrastructure at a reasonable cost.

They are, however, somewhat lagging when it comes to military technology, being relatively peaceful people and all.

Below are some other facts about the Chikyujin.

They are very understanding and hospitable people and would generally avoid conflict as much as possible.

The majority of them uphold a belief in what they call the Stream of Life, which encompasses all living things.

Their analog of ice cream is made from the secretions of giant aphid-like creatures.

Due to some mind-numbing stroke of coincidence, their language is an exact copy of Nihongo, save for the fact that they have characters with the letter "L" in it.

They also wear clothes. Mostly in the form of tunics.

They are absolutely terrified by the Cordyceps fungus.
