In recognition of player feedback regarding DRM and SecuROM on Spore, Maxis is offering a standalone download so that users can now “de-authorize” a computer if they would like to make that authorize available for another machine.

Machines can be de-authorized or re-authorized at any time. The total number of machines on which Spore can be authorized concurrently will continue to be five. To de-authorize a PC download and launch Spore_deauth.zip and run the Spore De-Authorization Tool.exe file.

You can de-authorize at any time, even without uninstalling Spore, and free up that machine authorization. If you re-launch Spore on the same machine, the game will attempt to re-authorize. If you have not reached the machine limitation, the game will authorize and the machine will be re-authorized using up one of the five available machines.

I have my own method. This requires hidden files to be viewable under folder options.

C:\Documents and Settings\(user name that Spore is installed under)\Application Data\SecuROM

Delete the SecuROM folder and you're done.

Better late than never.  I'm glad EA did this but I also still support their right to find a way to protect themselves from thieves.  I hope they can find a way to do this without upsetting legitimate (albeit over-reactive) customers.

What happens if in the future the game checks that folder for say patches or expansions? Won't you be screwed? Or have to reinstall again.

Excellent.  That makes a copy of the full game a Christmas possibility.  I've been using the AT&T editor all this time...

That won't un-authorize your machine.
That might simply just cause you problems if the game tries to re-authenticate, or future authentications, nothing more.

Authorization requires internet activity because it sends to EA your machine's Authentication code.
So as long as EA still has that authentication code in their system, that's -1 install for you.
