The NEW Superpower RP - Part III
« on: December 12, 2008, 08:45:45 am »
2016

Obano, humanity's shining star.  Obano, the world's last hope.  Obano, cradle of the best and the brightest.

2101

Obano, wasteland on a dying Earth.

Once the largest and most successful undertaking on the planet, the artificial continent of Obano became the battle ground for humanity's future.  Twice now, forces almost beyond comprehension have threatened the Earth, and twice they have been utterly destroyed.  And twice, the damage was irreparable, the continent and the world shaken to it's foundations.

The second confrontation nearly wiped humanity away, killing billions and leaving the continent in ruins.  The world, engrossed in it's own problems, has turned a blind eye to it's creation and leaves it's inhabitants to scrape a meager living from the lifeless deserts.  Tyrant's and warlords seize power across the land, raising ruthless empires.  The once technologically advanced island is thrown into a dark age and the people doubt they will ever see the light on the other side.

The ghosts of the past walk the wastes and new heroes, and villains, begin their rise to power.  Can you save this world?  Will you?  Or will you escort it to it's end, ruling with iron or destroying with flame.  Or perhaps you'll leave it to it's fate, watching as others raise it to glory or burn it to ashes.  The choice is yours, and the world waits with baited breath.

Welcome to the beginning.  Welcome to the end.  Welcome, to Obano.

RP OOC - Information Station - RPing Rules

Your Character

Be original with your origins and powers, and remember, the OOC thrad is the same as it always was. I have some quick words of advice for new RPers too -

1. Mean or handicapped characters are likely to just get you excluded from the action. You want to blend.

2. Remember your settings AT ALL TIMES. Likewise with your side, if you are bad, be bad.

3. Ulterior motives confuse things. Only let your character have one if you are an experienced writer.

A small convoy wound its way through a dusty gorge, kicking up great clouds of sand which stung the eyes of the passengers of the ramshackle jeep bringing up the rear. Its driver was young, but wore an expression of self-important irritation as he tried to ignore the rambling conversation directed at him. The second seat was... empty, or at least appeared so, as it was the source of the attempts at camaraderie which were causing the driver so much chagrin. Behind them was a large mounted machine gun, at which stood another young man, though this one was more tanned than the driver, and wore an expression of hidden depth under the grime smudged over his cheeks. A contrast to the pale skin and palpable air of arrogance possessed by his contemporary at the wheel.

The three vehicles clattered and rumbled across the wastes, occasionally taking detours around terrain too harsh even for their tires and tracks. The middle vehicle, the item being guarded, was a largish half-track truck. Enough peeling black paint still remained for an observer to make out the letters E and I emblazoned on the side, though any other letters, if indeed there were any, had long been scoured away by the sun and sand.
Sat on its roof and both apparently quite stable despite the rocking and bumping of their ride were two figures almost too large to be called men. One was clad entirely in a patchwork assortment of metal plating, adorned with two bandoleers full of grenades of various descriptions, though what one would notice first was the barrel of the artillery piece he carried on his back. Next to him sat a man of similar size, though greater girth. He was not armoured, though he looked for all the world like he didn't need it anyway. He positively exuded experience and potency, though like his partner on the roof, he said little.

At some unknown command the convoy stopped briefly and a woman got out of the leading jeep and strode to the drivers side window of the half-track. A few words were exchanged, and she nodded and returned to her vehicle. Despite the heat she was clad entirely in black, which contrasted with her hair, which was in equal measure white, and so blond it was almost white. What looked to be black smoke swirled around her gently and pooled at her feet like mist spilling from a deep-freeze, her face was concealed by a mask which could not be adequately described... everyone saw it differently, like a psychiatrist's inkblots or some impressionist's masterwork.
Her passenger was apparently some madman, bound in a filthy straitjacket, bound and gagged, blindfolded even. He twitched occasionally and made growling noises from behind the rag tied across his mouth. For some reason unknown he had been outfitted with no less than six holsters, in which nestled handguns of various manufactures, though all revolvers.

In the near distance, the raiders lay in wait. They were but one of many who had chosen to make their way in this shattered world by taking from others what was theirs, and they eyed the distantly approaching convoy with delighted anticipation. Had they known its cargo, and indeed its guards, they would perhaps not have been so eager...

A gas-powered dirt bike raced along the desert wastes. It's driver wore a camouflage suit, forest flavored (an odd choice for a desert). A long black braided ponytail trailed out from under her helmet and whipped in the breeze as she moved along. The bike screamed up a large hill and took to the air as it reached the peak. A magnificently strong wind wrapped around the bike and its rider and carried them for several hundred yards before allowing them to land softly on the ground and continue. There was a river in the distance and beyond it was an oasis of sorts. Tall trees sprung up from the ground on the opposite bank and bits of grass poked through the sandy soil. The bike came to a stop behind a large rock near the river and the driver hopped off. She walked across the nearly-dry river and entered the oasis.

Several decrepit buildings sat amidst an eerily thick veil of greenery. The entire scene was out of place considering the harsh wasteland a short distance away, even the air felt as if there were something wrong. It was always like that in Century's Rest though. The woman brushed it off and walked into a large steel building, the only structure not made out of wood or stone. She pulled an old chair off of the floor and set it up against the wall behind the building's entrance. Carefully, so as to not break the aging door, she pulled it open as far as she could to conceal herself. She sat down on the chair and waited.

The eyes peeked out of the bushes.  They're coming again.  The bike scavengers.  Jack tried to duck further in, so as to hide.  He made sure that they couldn't tell that he was there.  Though he did not know for a fact that they were evil, something about them distinctly scared Jack.  Maybe it was just paranoia. But Jack had learned to trust his instinct.  After all, his instinct was what gave him an edge over the people around him.  Certainly, it was a very different kind of instinct.  But Jack didn't feel like doing ignoring even this type of instinct- the last time he did that it got him into Obano in the first place.  He replayed the words in his head.  To be certain, Obano has had some problems, major ones.  But that doesn't mean I can't come visiting here.  He mocked his past self.  Jack waited for the bike to pass before finally darting away, out of the sight of anyone else in that area.

A pair of sharp gray eyes darted upward as the booming of an engine roared up above. Jack's bunch, most likely. They paused on the small block window only for a moment before returning to the flickering monitor before them. Stretching back from the creased forehead that sat above those worried eyes was a tightly drawn, mangy bind of hair, held together by a small band in its length. It was streaked in completely equal measure with jet black and gray, its formerly nondescript brown lost entirely. A hand thoughtlessly ruffled the hair, dropping to the controls of the infopad and scrolling further down.

"The test results from population four demonstrate increased irritability," Dr. Rates mumbled as he read off the digitized results. "They also seem to display an increased vulnerability to the sequence seven strain."

He scratched his chin.

Add it then, and introduce the strain. He paused for a moment and stared off. She can only become more useful, doctor.

Jordan began to nod. Good. He pushed himself up out of his rusting swivel chair and moved to open the seal to the adjacent room.

Down the street, a young man with fiery black hair covered his eyes as the wind picked up dust. Moving alongside a decrepit brick ruin, he pulled out the scrap of paper and unfolded it again.

We can begin the discussed treatment immediately. Please arrive on or about the morning of the coming Tuesday.

DR. J. L. R. PhD

The remainder of the paper was a map of southeastern New Wayward, with a small red dot marking a building not much farther ahead.

He tucked it back into his collar and continued to move along the side of the roadway. A blade of grass beside his footfall drooped ever-so-slightly.

It had been dark when he had awoken. Dark, hot, and steamy. The sheer terror that flooded through him as he struggled to free himself from some unseen monster's grasp, claws in his flesh, toungue down his throat, was his first memory. He had stumbed in that dark for an eternity, touching glass, metal, plastic, growing hungrier. Lifelights flitted about beyond the metal boundaries of his world, and he had reached out to them, subduing that nagging pain for a while longer.

Then he had found the door.

It had slid open easily, and so had the one beyond that, his world expanding with each one, untill the outermost one. This one, the Door, had not fought him, but instead opened allmost by itself, letting grit and sand blow in, along with the briliant, blinding LIGHT!!! of the day. At first he had cowered from it, this alien sensation, but after a time, he began to love it. Here was his world, for an eternity defined only by bangs and scrapes and fingertip touches, now made clear by this light.

He had ventured out, footing uncertain on the loose sand, returning less and less often to what could have been rightfully called his home. One day, he had never returned, and Obano's deserts became his home. He would have to go back one day, if only to see if it was still there, and not eaten by the sand like everything else in this place.

=======================

It was dark when he came out of his dream ?memory? The small town where he had currently set down was just like all the others he'd seen (and fed off of), which was how he liked it. The "cities", if they could be called that anymore, were places of insanity, ruled by men of evil and men hungry for what little power that could be had in this place. Men he liked to avoid, for fear he'd come to accept their ways in enough time.

He felt it was time to move on to the next of these little towns, perhaps with a stop at the river in the distance, and the oasis beyond that, a mere speck even in the mental image he had gleaned from one of the town's elderly residents before silently ending her life. He collected his scant few posessions and was soon beyond the town's borders, gone as quietly as he had come. His shoeprints in the sand were the only record of his passing, and even these would be gone by the time the sun came up...

The trek was long and uneventful, untill he had reached the "river", no more than a damp snake of earth in the heat. He had heard the clear sound of a motor in the distance, not long before he picked up it's rider, a faint blip on the horizon. He wasn't worried, he would just hide himself, like he did to the one in the bushes as he approached. They weren't looking for him, so they wouldn't see him as long as he didn't give them a reason to look for him...

"What's your number?" mumbled the roulette dealer.

"Uhm..." a scrawny man nervously looked over the wheel "..."

"You can pick a color too..." the dealer said, placing his hand on the deck "Come on you don't have all day."

"Seven?" the man finally responded.

The dealer nodded and spun the comically large wheel, then he tossed the ball in.

"Fourteen..." the scrawny man sighed.

"What a shame. You in again?" the dealer asked.

"I don't thi-" he began.

"Come on, you're bound to get lucky sooner or later." the dealer encouraged him.

"A-alright... you're right, I can feel it this time. I'm going all in." the scrawny man said, sliding what remained of his chips onto the number three.

"That's what I like to hear." the dealer said with a grin, he spun the wheel.

A large door flew open toward the back of the casino and a big man stepped out. His body appeared bloated, not fat... just looking as if he'd just been beaten with a stepladder. He was a walking stereotype. His long brown trench coat left a billowing trail of dust as he walked and two large black boots clanked across the casino's thick steel floor. The man's face was obscured by a faded red bandanna and a pair of black sunglasses. As he walked out into the casino a ring of silence seemed to follow him. People gingerly moved away from him as he passed only to return once he had gone. It was out of fear and respect for what he'd done. He had given them the casino, he had given them their town with its fresh supply of water, and he had given them a sense of normalcy. It was the least they could do to step out of his path. He was a "by any means necessary" kind of guy. If someone didn't move out of his path he'd find a way to make them move... by any means necessary.

The large man walked up behind the scrawny man by the roulette wheel and looked at it. One of his gloved hands rose into the air and brushed past his hat as he had second thoughts. Finally it came to rest on the scrawny man's shoulder. The scrawny man tensed up and nervously whimpered. With a chuckle, the dealer dropped the ball into the wheel and watched. The ball bounced a few times and then lazily spun along with the momentum of the large wheel. It came to rest on the number three.

"Congratulations." the dealer said to the man "You've won."

"I-I... YES!" the scrawny man cheered.

As the scrawny man celebrated, the large man removed his hand from his shoulder and walked away.

Taking the pair of binoculars offered to him by his comrade, Marty took one last moment to look over the caravan.  It wouldn’t be easy, that was certain, but it was definitely do-able.  The two big guys might be able to put up a bit of a fight, but if push came to shove there were the RPGs, though that was really a last resort more than anything else.  He didn’t like that vibe that black-clad woman gave him.  In the back of his mind, a small voice was screaming for him to pull out, but there was too much at stake for that.  You don’t have an escort that size without good reason, and well, Marty was curious as to what that reason was.

And so, giving his approval to his cohorts, it was decided.  From the middle of the gang, a flare went up, seconds later, far on the other side of the caravan, another rose to meet it.  The ball was in motion.  Jumping into their cars, they tore off down the hill they had stopped on, streaming towards the caravan.  From the other side, out of the billowing dusts of the wasteland, came the other half of the attack force.  At least a good 2 dozen cars were roaring towards their target, intent on recovering whatever goods were worth so much protection.

Ah well, no turning back now…

"So, that's all you needed then?" a man said as he spun his cane on his finger.

"Yes, you've been a great help over the last couple weeks. Here's your payment."

Taking the assortment of coins, the man tapped down the cane and bowed as he put the money away.

So this is what has become of Harland Frazier, "Obanoian Historian"? More like Harland Frazier, "Hand for Hire". he thought as he stepped out of the building and pulled up his makeshift respirator.

Oh well, at least this should get me meals for a while.

Walking to a nearby structure, Harland walks in and takes a seat, and waits to make an order for some much needed food.

"They've gone under as well? It's a shame we won't be seeing further business from them, but then again, I guess it's their own fault when they ordered so many robots so fast. Well, did the bank recover all of them?" A woman said as she typed away into a console embedded into the desk at which she sat.

"I think so, the shipment just came in yesterday and we haven't yet finished our inventory of them."

"Alright, I'll check the robots when you're finished."

Nodding, the man say himself out.

The door to the office was a standard office door with an inset window and lettering on the window, it reads:

Kimberly Yasipolitz
Director of Cybernetics
Virus Buster.

"Alex, do come in!"

Alex slowly peaked his head around the ornate wooden door of the Chairman's office. Inside was a heavily decorated, wood paneled room. The chairman himself was seated behind a heavy oak desk laden with old books.

"Well don't just stand there boy, sit down!"

Alex slowly took a seat.

"Right. No small talk, let's get straight to business." Alex wondered what made the man think he wanted small talk.

"I assume you know what my summons means." The chairman continued. "You've finally been chosen to complete a task! Congratulations my boy! And it's a simple one too..." The man leafed through one of the many files strewn over his desk. "A retrieval mission. A man named Harland Frazier has something we need. A cane, or, rather a sword, that this ignorant man stole from us! Of course, the weapon is very powerful, and is no use in the hands of this filthy.... filthy historian. All you have to do is get it back, and maybe you'll be sitting in this chair next month!" The man very slightly rolled his eyes, but just enough for Alex to notice this and smirk.

"It seems that we don't really know where he is right now... So you'll be starting from a blank slate. I'm sorry boy, we can't help you."

The Chairman suddenly hopped out of his chair and strode over to the bookshelf on the wall behind him. He climbed one of the ladders leaning against the massive display of literature from every era.

"I know I had it somewhere... Hmmm. Last I checked, it was hidden in one of these..." The man gently plucked a book from the shelf and leafed through the pages. "No..." The book went back on the shelf, and the man continued to move from left to right, leafing through every book slowly. This went on for eight minutes.

"There we are, the Key!" There had been a small bronze key hidden between the pages of one of the books. The universal Key to every piece of the Knights' property. Nothing was hidden from any members of the Knights.

Alex took the Key and carefully placed it it into one of his pockets.

"Now go, and get started. Get the sword by any means necessary. The circle must not be broken!"

The bound and gagged man abruptly turned to the woman driving.

"Company Command." came a whisper-faint voice in her head "Twenty-seven directly ahead... less than two-dozen moving to flank.... weak minded, mostly, easily cowed."
"Thank you Deadeye" said Command, stopping the jeep and standing on the seat. "All right Ravens! We've got company!" she boomed.
"Nobody, you scout ahead and try to spook them. Flash, you're with Deadeye. Rookie... ugh... just try to stop them getting in the truck. Broadside, you stay up there and do your thing. Clay and I will take the fight to the raiders. Lets move!

Kevin turned the map over again.  Records from before twenty years before were fairly useless now, but he was considering using them anyways.  The rough map he'd gotten off a local was a patchwork of what he'd heard from travelers and a vague idea of which way was east.  At the moment he was supposed to be in Century's Rest, which was stop one on his tour of the continent, as opposed to a section of wasteland identical to every other, which was not.

He spun around as engines roared somewhere behind him and climbed the ridge he'd been using as cover from the wind.  Cars streaked by in the distance, moving towards something he couldn't quite make out.  He raised his camera and zoomed in far enough to make out a series of larger vehicles in the distance, heading towards what looked like trees.  The local had said Century's Rest was in an oasis...

As he considered this, Ced trotted up the hill behind him, tracking the cars as they passed examining them for any hostile action.
Nefarious?  Nearly.  Ne’er-do-well?  Never!  Neither nearly names this narrator.  Naive and knowledgeable, notorious and inscrutable, this nascent Nero is known naturally as Neoadept.

The woman looked up as the sound of roaring engines rose up in the distance. She cursed and looked at her watch. It was nearly time but it seemed as if someone had beaten her to the punch. She rushed out of the building and ran back down across the riverbed to her bike. Her boss was very adamant about retrieving a ring that the convoy was carrying. If she didn't return with it there was no point in returning unless she wanted to die. She slipped her helmet on, hit the kick start, and tore off across the desert. As the woman rushed toward the direction of the sound she flipped up her visor and looked through a monocular for a moment. The convoy was a speck several miles off. A strong wind gathered around the woman and she put her visor back down. The gusts kicked up from behind and pushed her faster and faster. A veil of sand and gravel surrounded the bike and its rider as they moved until all that could be seen was a mass of debris barreling across the barren landscape.

"How does the Red Zone look?" a woman asked from behind a elegant desk, she had her back turned and was looking out a window.

"It looks good, ma'am." a soldier in shining black armor responded "The people seem to be doing their part in quashing any outside interference."

"Good. I knew it was a good idea to bring back the Red Zone. The people are so desperate for what they once had that they'll do the enforcing for us... provided we throw them a bone every now and again." the woman said with a smile.

"Ms. Beaupre..." the soldier said.

"Yes?" the woman, Jeanette Beaupre, asked.

"We've gotten a report that your son Geoffrey has begun working with Rave-" the soldier began.

"That boy is no son of mine." Jeanette spat "He is the scum of the earth. I'll have him and his pathetic father killed with the rest of them."

"So then the plan is still a go?" the soldier asked.

"Absolutely. Brady, Myrmer... both of them, and anyone that associates with them has to go. They are nothing but parasites. The Nation of Obano will come to rule all and then we will finally be able to relive Obano's golden age." Jeanette said as she lifted a black silk scarf from her desk and wrapped her head "My Agents will crush them. No one can resist the might of the Obano Enforcement Initiative."

"Very good, ma'am." the Agent said before saluting.

A blue cape fluttered in the gentle breeze. The alien sat cross-legged on a rocky outcrop, meditating on her problems. With her three eyes closed, her mind's eye reached out across the continent...

The wasteland wasn't her problem - there were few people who knew that it was criss-crossed by subterranean streams of salt water, and of those only one was in a position to take advantage of it. No, if the desert could be a friend to anyone, it was a friend to her.
The villages and confederacies that grew around sources of fresh water, they weren't her problem either. She had spent the last twenty-two years protecting and nurturing them and had earned their trust and friendship. If the people who survived in this hell could love anyone, they loved her.
Neros City - that was one of her problems. Whenever the hand of justice reached there it was burned, shot at by armed guards and automated turrets. This same hand involuntarily clenched its webbed fingers into a fist as it remembered who ruled Neros City. If the alien could hate anyone, she hated her.
Another city, another problem. Taraq, that cesspool, lay beyond her reach in the hands of another tyrant. The caverns below were collapsed in some places, blocked off in others - and approaching from the surface was suicide. The Tyrant's artillery ranged for miles around the city, and even her reflexes couldn't avoid such a barrage for so long. But all his precautions against the alien proved on thing, she thought: that is he could fear anything, he feared her.
The island of Avalon - was that her problem? Once she had been invited in and fought to save it - and the world. But that was been a long time ago and now it was locked tight and forbidden to her. What passed there was beyond her knowledge. If Avalon confused anyone - and it confused many people - it certainly confused her.
The bike gangs that marauded across the wasteland, pillaging for food and supplies - that she could hear in the distance now, in fact. They weren't her problem...

But she certainly was theirs.

Ethan leapt off the gun platform, landing softly on the sandy ground. An attack on the convoy was troublesome, but not unexpected. That's why they were guarding it, after all. He ran towards the front Jeep, where Deadeye was waiting. He was startling at first, but after a few weeks with the Ravens he had become accustomed to the oddities that the company contained. Well, most of them. He nodded to Command as she passed, trying not to make eye contact. That mask was the one thing he hadn't gotten used to, it still freaked him out every time he saw it.

He crouched down and began drawing shapes in the dust, preparing a couple of the more complex spells he was going to use. He wasn't great with runes, but he couldn't use these without them. Returning to his feet, he turned to Deadeye and grinned.

"You ready for this?"
