Attack of the 50ft spambots
« on: November 12, 2008, 01:15:38 pm »
Some of you may have noticed a lot of spambots have been popping up recently.

If you spot another one (and believe me, you will know when you have spotted one) report the post, or better yet PM me (I check my PMs more often than my emails, usually) and I will bring the banhammer down on them.

That is all.

Why are they popping up recently? We've never really had a problem before. Do you know something that we don't? Is there anything you folks in the administration can do to keep them out?

Does it count if they haven't posted yet?  I wonder why there are spam bots, never happened before...  At least not in the time I've been here(plus the month I hadn't registered yet while my brother was registered).

If you have good reason to suspect a spam bot before it posts feel free to bring it to our attention.

Why yes! Unfortunately theres this annoying little technicality in the constitution that prevents us from getting rid of the spybots and trolls and making the forum a paradise. Now, remember, when this goes to referendum you vote "yes" on the 'Ultimate evil Mod empire' ballot, mmkay?  :)

I suspect this person is a spam bot, or at least a bot.  Because his website is too long for one thing, and the link is misgiving...  It brings you to a ****** website.  It promises an antispam solution. http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?action=profile;u=4461

You know it's kinda funny actually. Do those bots really think they are going to sell more ****** than TV does simple because it's the Internets?  :P

I've spoken with Steve about the issue. He mentioned that he has increased the security on the site hopefully this should help.

yea well, I think there was a hole in the spambot firewall or something. Seems to be confined to the site news section, but then again, spambots tend to target the first forum section.

Wouldn't a simple image code check on registration get rid of the problem? Of course, we'd need Steve to do it and he rarely comes by nowadays, let alone having the time to implement something like that on the forums.

Do you mean the little box which has letters and numbers of various sizes which you have to copy to validate it? I thought we already had that.

Seems like the spambots have stopped though.

I don't recall having that when I signed up, either way those have to be some really smartass spambots to get through it :P

These two members are spambots(I think, but the first one definitely should be banned because of the website).  I PMed Krakow, no response yet.

The second one has a list as a website with nothing on it...  Suspicious.

If you know they're spambots, why do you visit their sites anyway? There's a good chance they have spyware.

Also, give the mods some time to respond, they can't be online all the time.

I didn't know it was a spam site until I looked.  What do you expect, me to see they have a website, and then say they are a spambot without evidence?

I had given them time.  3 days.

Just make PMs. It really isn't good to publicly name them.
