How do expansions work?

How do they work? Sorry, im not a huge computer gamer, the only computer game i own is Diablo II and i dont know how they work....is it like the game with added stuff? Do you load it on your comp and it goes into the game?

Oh boy, where have you been?

Expansions are just add ons that install into the existing game. Expansions do not play by themselves so you do need the original game to use expansion pack content.

Yeah, you basically install it on top of the existing installation of the original game. It's like a patch, but expensive  ;D

I thought Diablo II had an expansion. But like you thought, you just buy it, put in the disc, and it loads up new content to the game.
