Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
« on: October 07, 2008, 03:18:19 pm »
The newest in the Harvest Moon series now out on the Wii.

Gamespot gave this game a 6.0

Now, as much as overinflated scores irk me, I didn't realize how bad understated scores are by comparison.
If you are a fan of the Harvest Moon series like I am, this game has that core gamplay feel that made the earlier titles in the series the guilty pleasures that they were.

If you are a fan of the Harvest Moon series, and you happen to own a Wii, I would reccomend buying this.

That being said, it is not without a few flaws.

1. Loading screens. It reminds me of the PS1 days where you have about a 3-4 second load between areas. A little annoying, but not a game-breaker.
2. Frame Rates. The frame rate can slow down a bit when it rains. Again, not unplayably so, just slightly annoying.
3. Camera Angle. On the upside you don't have to wrangle with a camera. On the downside, this is because you can't. It is pretty much a fixed angle everywhere you go. Granted, most areas are designed with this in mind and you can navigate pretty well, but sometimes you just want to shift it over or zoom out a bit to see a larger area. Like the first two, a bit annoying but nothing game breaking.

These three items combines are not enough to sour my enjoyment of the game. There are enough new characters, animals, mechanics, jobs, and storyline items to more than make up for these three flaws.

In short, don't get scared off by the 6.0 gamespot score. The average user score (8.4 at the time of this post) is much more accurate to the game's true enjoyment factor.

I'm not scared off my the score... I'm scared off by it being a Harvest Moon game. I've got a closet full of Harvest Moon games and they're all alike. The last one I got was Island of Happiness (Tree of Tranquility's companion of sorts) and it was the same damn thing. As much as I hate to say it... I think I'm done with Harvest Moon. :(

Never played one Harvest Moon game ever. How are they? You go around doing strange tasks for people or what? is somekind of combat involved etc.?
If you stop and think about it, Your life's longer as an old guy than a kid. Scary o.o

Well I mean... farming in a video game only stays interesting for so long. After you've played about ten of them... eh, you can fill in the blank. :-\

I was cleaning my office/computer area the other day and found pages on pages of notes I printed about Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. I still find it odd that I got so hooked on it and it was just a game boy game. I haven't been able to get into any of the others though. Not sure why.

I would have to say FoMT was one of the better Harvest Games. In my opinion, it lacked the flaws some of the newer ones had.

So, how does this one play? I hope they didn't split it into chapters as A Wonderful Life did.

I started playing this over the weekend to try it out and so far I'm not impressed. Harvest Moon has such potential to be a great game. If only they could do it like Animal Crossing. The thing that irritated me the most was I started it up yesterday to find that the saved game started back at the beginning. So all the saves I said yes to didn't work. I have to redo about an hour's worth of boring things to get back to where I was.

The game moves slow, it takes too long to load between scenes, the dialog is slow. I'm trying to play far enough for it to get interesting but I'm having my doubts. So far the best HM game was FoMT. Imagine that, a gameboy game much better than the console version.

I also tried Wonderful Life and it was slow and boring. *yawn*

I'll give this one a little bit longer but it better start saving right or I'm chucking it out the window.

I liked Wonderful Life......
No, no, he did. In the everything else section, at least. Officially, this makes him king.

I remember the original Harvest Moon...

Man, that brings back memories...

Confession: My save issues were basically a "stupidity" issue on my part. When it came up to save after each story section I just kept pressing A thinking that it saved but it seems that you have to move the cursor up to "yes" as it defaults on "no". Now my games are saving properly.  :-[

Update: I'm actually still playing this game and it's getting more interesting. I'm having to read the online guides a lot. It still has mining and farming but the game play is different enough to keep me interested so far. The days go by fast. I'm in the first summer. Is anyone else playing?

In my opinion the best Harvest moon game is ether Back to nature or Magical melody.

I think part of me always played the Harvest Moon games on the off chance that it'd turn into some kind of porno on the character's wedding night. It hasn't happened... yet.

At the rate I'm going my character will never marry. I read enough to know that I should try with Calvin (whom I haven't met) that his scenario cause a major glitch in the mine.
