DS or PSP - The Poll

Ok then, somebody had to poll it: DS or PSP? If you could only have one of these lovely shiney excellent portable consoles, which would it be? Vote now and... yeah. Vote.

I all ready have my precious PSP now, watching Spiderman2 at the moment, and getting ready to pick up a couple of games at a store that has them in stock.

Got mine as well. Wow, that screen is just amazing Spider-man 2 looks almost as good as my 55-inch HDTV (but tiny!). Got a couple of games, standard fare. Nothing amazing, the release games are good, but nothing amazingly original. I'll talk about it in my new podcast (which I plan on doing today).

Even though I certainly do love Nintendo...

There's just something that bothers me about the abstract design.
That and I can't watch movies on it.

Sorry Mario

Ooh well after the DS getting a head start from me voting for it the PSP took an early lead but the DS has come back, but with many still to vote it's probably all going to change. At least twice.

For me, neither.  I'm sticking to my GBA:SP until I see what the online services are going to look like.

The DS has some design flaws that'll stop me from getting it at least until I find the ultimate DS game.

The PSP...is too bloody expensive! I'd get one but $400+ (au) is way too much.

Not taking money into account, PSP. I already have a GBA:SP (actually playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance right now...too bad the plot in that thing is utter crap) and the DS doesn't sport any games that would make me buy it..

Also, other than the money, Steve gave it such a great review that I'd consider it for sure.

PSP would have stomped out DS for me if it wasn't for the price. I still think PSP is better than the DS, but it's just too expensive! argh!

Neither of them have libraries that are convincing enough for me to want either at the moment, which is especially sad on the DS side, since they've had about a 5 or 6 month head start to build up a library and still the only game worth playing is a 9-year-old port of an N64 launch game.

I'll probably be getting a PSP after they lower the price (which I'd assume would be before Christmas) and hopefully get some more worthwhile games, as I'm only slightly interested in Lumines and Metal Gear Acid at this point.

I'm leary about the PSP.  I've always steered clear from Playstation, since I was offended by an anti-Saturn ad of theirs several years ago.  I do have a Sony PDA, but only a few months after I got it Sony pulled out of the PDA market ABANDONING users with little/no warning.  Its making me something of a SONY-phobic.  Now with dead-pixel stories and their must-return-to-Sony support protocol, I'm even more leary.  Add to that that this thing has a DRIVE disturbs me.  Moving parts in a portable??  Unless they've made that really well - I'd expect those to start to die sooner than anything else.   Add to that the overal expense and geez -- no way.

I got the DS shortly after Christmas.  My Advance was having problems - so this was a good replacement.  MOST of the games I still play are Advance games.  I've liked the puzzle games on this, although I'm wondering how long before the lower touch screen is scuffed or marred by stylus usage.  At least the battery life is good

In power, the PSP is better than the DS, no question. But in cost, stability, and manufacture, the DS has the upper hand.

the PSP was set to be released in New Zealand in April, but because of the dead pixel issue, it might not be released until around xmas time, which is fricken ages away!
so the DS will be the leading portable machine here for a while yet.

I don't plan on getting either any time soon.

The DS: I have my GBA and N64, why do I need this? It's got a touch screen, that's nice. I don't need a map to show me where the castle is in Mario 64. The DS also doesn't look as sturdy as it's predecessors. I mean, you drop a Gameboy, you don't need to worry. I know people whose Gameboys have gone through the wash or fallen off roofs and survived. I doubt if the DS could take much, but I've never really handled one. So, no DS, not unless SSB:DS comes out.

The PSP: Did you SEE the price tag? I can't afford that, at least not now. I have a portable DVD player, and I have my PS2. Like Steve said in his podcast, it's not a unique experience. I'm sure when GTA:PSP comes out, I'll be rushing to the store to buy one just like everybody else. Maybe even if it's just GTA3... I had a great time with GTA3, and playing it on the go could be fun. Just imagine GTA3 on a plane. Of course, PS3 might be out by then, and the mini PS2 with LCD screen might be out, too. I guess it depends on timing and my income levels. Hopefully it won't end up trying to do everything and just fail miserably.

Its so the DS for me.  I've had mine for a month now and still do not own a single DS game.  So why did I buy it?  So I could play my current GBA games on it!  I have a GBA, and playing the games on the DS makes them 10 times better.  Still keep my GBA around for GB and GBC games as well as GC connectivity (FF:CC).

Incorrect! name these so called 'good' games on the PSP. Chances are they have a DS equivalent which is superior in every way...maybe :P

There are many great games on the PSP, that you can't find any equivalent to on the DS, like Wipeout Pure, GTA:LCS, and Socom: Fireteam Bravo. And even games that are on both like Burnout: Legends are much Superior on the PSP.

Although I'm enjoying my DS too much to want to spend money on another handlheld, I am curious about the PSP.  I have no idea what games (if any) are any good on it.  From what little I know, it is mostly just getting ports of things that have a million sequels already, with Lumines still being its star game.

I decided to get a DS, mainly since my brother got a PSP.  So far I think that they are both good.  PSP is definetly more of a media device, but it has some good games like Burnout. Also the graphics blow DS out of the water.  However DS games are a little more innovative and different.  The one thing that would make me change from DS to PSP however would be a MGS game for PSP (not the MGA card game stuff they have now)

PlayStation Portable. I'm loving this thing. I love the games, mp3 player, movie player, picture viewer, web browser, wallpaper. It's incredible.

Anyone who says that the PSP is lacking games needs to rethink their statement.

I hate having to do this, but if you're going to that, then:

kick ass:

Ridge Racer
Lumines
Wipdeout Pure
Metal Gear AC!D
Twisted Metal: Head-On
Hot Shots Golf
ATV Offroad Fury
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
Gripshift
Burnout Legends
Virtua Tennis
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Socom: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo

will probably, when they're out, kick ass:

Metal Gear: AC!D 2
Daxter
Colin McRae 2005
Gun
Gundam: Tactics
My My Katamari
Harvest Moon - Innocent Life
Fight Night: Round 3
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
Gran Turismo PSP
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Tenchu
A second Grand Theft Auto game.

And if I get bored, which isn't even close to happening:

I'll watch movies. :)

I'd have to say a fair share of the games your listed fal into the Catergories of Sport and Racing which was what I listed. Ad the fact I also mentioned GTA and there is at least 10 or 12 of the what you had there like half the list  Most of which is in the already out list we have to wait for variety.

I think a lot of people mistake new games in a series for ports. Burnout: Legends isn't a port (on the PSP any way), Wipeout Pure isn't a port, Ridge Racer isn't a port, GTA:LCS isn't a port. If those were ports then there would be a lot of ports on the DS to, and Nintendo have been known for making ports for their handhelds before the DS. Saying the PSP is a port platform is ignorant because it isn't. Sure you can get a lot of the series on consoles to, but a handheld platform is almost meant for that, playing your favorite series on the go. Most of the people who know about games that I have shown my PSP to, have almost always asked the question if you can get games from other platforms on the PSP, because they know those games and want to play them on the go.
At least with the PSP, the games that are ported can actually be good unlikely some of the most recent ones on the DS, *cough* King Kong*cough*Burnout*cough*.

DS - cuz it has a good selection of good games!

The only ones that would interest me on the PSP are Wipeout Pure and Lumines.  ...and what is up with TWO-HUNDRED-FIFTY freaking dollars?!?!  Call me again when it's $150 or less.

It's called the port system because some games that you've mentioned, such as GTA:LCS, basically are ports (I know that GTA:LCS is a new game, but it's pretty much GTA III)

I think that the two systems are meant for different people. I like my DS because even when I'm not on the go, I can still enjoy experiences I can't get anywhere else but on the DS. However, if I traveled more (And I'm going to be flying a LOT from next year on out) than I would love to have a PSP to play my favorite PS2 games on the go.

What the PSP really needs is some really good exclusive titles (This doesn't count Death Jr.). Titles that are great, but only for PSP.

That may be, but then the DS could also be called a port system, since there are many games that have little to no difference from previous games in that games series. Advanced Wars: Dual Strike, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows, Animal Crossing: Wild Worlds, and other big DS games don't really need any of the new DS features for them to play.

Oh I agree, the PSP and DS are for different people.

True, those arte basically ports, but then there are also games like Nintendogs, and Meteos, that are completly different and unique to the DS system.

Ports arent't always a bad thing, I dont want my DS to be too different (Though too many ports sucks too).

The bad part about DS ports is that they can also be severly watered down (Burnout, King Kong, ect.)

I think the whole "ports are a negative" argument is the weakest one possible for the PSP.

Its completely hypocritical when DS fanboys use it because the best games on the DS are ports/updates of classic title. Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Castlevania, Advance Wars, Sonic, Viewtiful Joe, Tony Hawk. If ports were such a "bad" thing then why are these games so great? Why is it so awesome to have classic mario and zelda games on GBA? Its because good games become even better when you can pull it out of your pocket.

Sony's problem isnt that its created a port machine. Their problem is that they released a system at a bad time in gaming. Sure, the consumer welcomes a high end portable gaming machine. But it seems that due to the Next-Gen being so close, the developers (including Sony themselves) have half-a$$ed their software. So many quality titles turned out to be merely "passable" and that doesnt make you very confident. Sure, its early in the PSP's life so things can change but with all the momentum they had going into this thing they really dropped the ball so far.

I sold my DS to buy a PSP. ANd sold my PSP to get 2 DS's and now i couldnt be happier. Games are 10-15 cheaper, as a casual gamer i'm enjoying the titles they offer much more. Nostalgic "ports" are definitely what i look to portable gaming for and the DS is providing it. I'll buy a PSP again when they make parappa for it. :D

Of course, but the PSP isn't without unique games either.

Ports are a good thing, it allows as many people as possible to play a certain games, and some might even be better for the system their are ported to. Most mutiplatform games are developed for the PS 2 first, and then ported to other systems. However since the PS 2 isn't as powerfull as the other systems, the other systems versions often look better. In the PSP case, it is nice to take GTA or Burnout on the go. I was to a Christmas lunch (I don't know how else to translate it) yesterday, and it was over 4 hours away from my home, and I didn't get home until today (I stayed overnight by my grandma). So it was nice to be able to play my PSP instead of just sitting and looking out in the air.

The bad part about DS ports is that they can also be severly watered down (Burnout, King Kong, ect.)

That is one of the reasons why I believe the PSP may have the upper hand on the DS, it can handle console ports.

For an average gamer who wants madden or the sims or whatever (something on every platform) it would be great to get it for the PSP because the games look a ton better on the PSP and most dont really take advantage of the DSes unique features.

Ports also helped the Xbox when it came out after the PS2, although the PSP needs some new games as in nothing from the consoles, something completely new like Tokobot (sp?) or Lumines but something that can appeal to more people.  Plus the PSP has tons of potential building up, some truly great games will better come out next year.  Online games better start improving to like xmen and SOCOM now.  Like untold ledgens and maybe field commander (i can hope :)).  As long as nintendo keeps pumping out great games for their system, Sony will need to stay one step ahead.  Like the mic for the PSP and maybe a firmware allowing homebrew or a central online network or something.  They should stop focusing on the media seeing how the PSP won dominate the mobile video or music market the wasy Sony want it to (unless they give it a hard drive or maybe make a umd burner but that would kill the battery).

I couldn't get my xbox 360 so while I wait for more to ship
and for Oblivion to come out I picked up a DS.
I never really played Gamboy, Gameboy Color,
or Gameboy Advanced and I haven't played much
Nintendo since the N64 so the DS games and the
GBA games while ports to most of you guys are really
fresh and new for me. I am digging it.
Most of that time I owned a PS2
(2 of which broke) and an xbox.
So the PSP games are really been there just done that.

Been renting a bunch of games from GameFly.

Fire Emblem Sacred Stones GBA

Check out:

Bought the PSP, enjoyed it for a bit, then it collected dust in the summer of '05. In the fall of '05, I stumbled accross homebrew, and I've been enjoying my PSP on a daily basis ever since.

I'm a huge NES & SNES fan, and I'm playing through all the games I enjoyed years ago.

This is what I always wanted my GBA to be!

It's really a no contest at this point.  Although it started off slow, the DS now has a huge library of classic games, and has even more on the way.
I have nothing against the PSP, but at this point it's library of games isn't that fantastic, and what it does have, is mostly ports of games you can get on the PS2, with less features.  Though it is starting to get better, it'll be a while before it overtakes the DS.

The PSP does have some other features that may make it appeal to more people, but I can't think of one of them that is useful to me.  UMD's are much more expensive than DVD's and less useversial.  The web browser is slow, and you'd need a PC with an internet connection anyway, and it's too big and delicate to be used as an MP3 player, compared to something like an iPod or even a cheap mp3 player.

I bought a DS when they came available in the UK, played Mario64 and the Metroid demo for a while, then went back to my GBA.  When GTA came out, I bought a PSP.  I played that until POP: Revelations came out, which is great.  And then Mario Kart came out.  Haven't been near the PSP since.

The PSP is a nice machine, needing some games ( are you listening Sony??? ).  As an MP3 player, it doesn't compete with my iPod.  Browsing is painful.  Watching UMD's on it, is nice, but they're a tad too expensive.

Until some decent PSP games come out, the DS is the most fun console to have.

I find it ironic that the best games on the PSP are ten and twenty year old games from the competition...

Well, they are probably also making money from the games and they probably also make a fair amount of money on their memory sticks.
