[spoiler] Philosophies?
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:16:41 pm »
I'm not sure what determines your Philosophy for space stage.
When I arrived in space, I found that my philosophy was Shaman, which gives the ability of Return Ticket. That lets me warp back to my home system from any planet in the galaxy.

In the manual there are 10 philosophies listed, one of them being Wanderer which doesn't have a special ability and is what you get if you start a new game in space.

The book doesn't say how your philosophy is determined though.
I imagine it has something to do with the consequences from previous stages, but there are 3 different consequence paths for each stage, so that gives a total of 81 different consequence paths in total, but only 9 philosophies.
I suspect that it is calculated only by your tribal and civ choices, but I was in the green on both of them, so I'd think I would get the ecologist philosophy.

My entire consequence history is:
Cell: Blue (Omnivore)
Creature: Green (Social)
Tribal: Green (Friendly)
Civ: Green (Religious)
Space Philosophy: Shaman

Anyone else who has played all the way through from cell to space, please post your consequence history so we can try to work this out.
You can find it by hitting T in space stage. It's shown along the top of the history screen.

Theory:

When you finish a phase of the game, the starting point for the next one is set by how you played.

For example, If I go around and kick everyone's ass in tribal, I'll end up a Military civilization. There are allways three ending "classes"; The social, herbivore, religious type; the aggressive, carnivore, militaristic type; and the adaptable, omnivore, economic type.

When you enter space, however, your race is placed into on of nine archetypes, instead of on of three. These include ones like Diplomat, Trader, Scientist, Shaman, Warrior, etc.

I had it worked out that how you end each stage (Cell- Civ) determines the final outcome.

Ending in the Social/Herbivore/Economic area adds a point to an invisible scale. The highest you can go with this is +4 (from four stages total), which I assume would lead to some sort of galactic peace keeper archetype.

By playing the Adaptable/Omnivore/Religious route, you the scale is unaffected, just adding 0. You play through the entire game like this, and you come out as flat 0. This most likely gives you something like opprotunist or shaman.

Going the Aggressive/Carnivore/Military way subtracts a point from the scale. Here you can go as low as -4, which probably slots you into the "let's blow stuff up!" archetype.

I haven't played the game, so I can't be absolutely sure...

Let's see if I get bragging rights for figuring it out before Spore came out...

I also had an Omnivore/social/friendly/religious and got the Shaman in space stage.

Another game I was Wanderer starting straight from Space.

And Warrior Passion for playing aggressive carnivore kill kill kill all the way.

Don't know about the others.

Scientist:

Everyone knows you can change this correct?  Costs you 5M and you have to talk to someone of the philosophy you want.

How exactly do you change it?
I have about 15M, and I've tried asking empires about their philosophy but I never get an option to change to it.

I get the option to change philosophies by:
1. Become an ally with a species with the philosophy I want to change to.
2. Go into the Diplomacy menu and ask about them.
3. Go to the Mission menu and select the second option.

So collating everyone's results, I've figured out how your archetype is determined, assuming you start from cell.

If you play as three or four of the same color trait, you will end up with one of these:
Green: Shaman
Blue: Trader
Red: Warrior

If you play as half and half, you will end up this way:
Green and Blue: Diplomat
Green and Red: Zealot (still need confirmation)
Blue and Red: Scientist

If you play as all colors at least once, depending on which one you played twice:
Green: Ecologist (still need confirmation)
Blue: Bard
Red: Knight

I can confirm ecologist. I played herbivore-predator-friendly-economic.

And with nice pictures just for fun. ;)
Note, the squares just show how many of what kind you must have, the order doesn't matter.

Zealots are a pretty extreme mixture then, no wonder they're so messed up.
