(BIG SPOILER) center of the galaxy
« on: September 05, 2008, 12:45:22 am »
so I finally traveled to the center of the galaxy, man its very difficult to make it, the grox have about a million systems around it, and they shoot you for comming anywhere near thier territory.  I ended up having to run from empty planet to empty planet, making small outposts and terraforming them to t1 so that i could buy another colony kit and do it again on the next planet...

but after about an hour of fighting, dieing, and struggling my way towards the center and what do I get for my troubles...

Let me first say that im not normally one to complain, Im actually one of the few defending space stage.

but the scene at the center was very dissapointing, first this big voice tells you about how your connected to other galaxies and how you must spread life through out, (im assuming expansions...) then it turns out to be some little spacecraft named steve.  and after all your hard work and fighting and toiling he gives you a staff of light (or genesis device) and thats it, it spits you back into your galaxy and you have to work your way back through the grox if you want to take your genesis device home... meanwhile your entire empire has crumbled because you just spent and hour not tending to its needs.

I love the game to death, dont get me wrong, but I wish the final cutscene was better...

I believe in compulsory cannibalism. If people were forced to eat what they killed there would be no more war

Yes 'Steve'

Its basically more or less what I was expecting to happen, some attempt at humour and a new tool.

The game is designed to be a sandbox so there is no real ending.

You do get the Staff of Life that lets you instantly terraform a planet with creatures but it only has 42 uses and isn't really that entertaining after a while. I also think limiting it to 42 uses is a stupid move, its more than enough that it makes terraforming a bit anticlimatic but stops any cool things like trying to terraform the entire galaxy.

I would have preferred some halfway decent tools though, like planet shapers without stupid recharge limits that give you control over them so you can draw a river rather than it randomly going anywhere. A raise/lower terrain beam would have been a great tool (rather than the missile you have).

I wanted to do things like make a planet with the top half ocean and the bottom smooth ground, the deepest hole possible or a cool effect i found that involved using the river tool on some already deep water (it actually raises the ground near the surface and looks cool) but trying to do it with the included tools would just take ages. Also the tools are branded with with odd shapes such as swirls, a giant gear, ones that look like tentacles, there are some awesome shapes on the procedurally generated planet but these look awesome because they seem natural, there is no way to recreate them. If you have played Simcity4 you will remember the coolness you could have with making the terrain for the city, there is almost none of this in the game.

I also think that unlocking the use limit tools would have been a good idea, so you don't need to do pointless trading runs for money just to keep making creatures (which costs about 1.5mil). You can use the inbuilt creature creator to make them but you need to import them in somehow. One you are at that stage of the game there is no challenge (well there isn't much at all since dying has no effect).

AH HA! YOU SEE?

This is why they need to release the planet editor. I don't know when but they should soon.

Only 42 uses you say? Where have I heard that number before?
I say NO! to all limits.
Unfortunately, I don't think we're far enough into the Civ stage to have deveoped into the 'Infinite-ghz processing' research tree yet...

Aw... I was hoping it was the planet editor at the center of the galaxy. So that way I can blow up planets on a whim and not think about the long-term consequences of destroying a world (since the planet editor could allow you to populate solar systems that you blasted right?). *sigh*

Well at least the now I know whats in there.  So now I'm not gonna be in a big hurry to get there. Thanks outlander_biz :)

man what an anti-climax, ontop of other things I am starting to really regret buying Spore and thats lame because I have waited for Spore so long, and I always knew it wasn't going to be some Ultra game porn, but space stage is being less then impressive.

It's a sandbox game, it's not meant to have an ending. Even this 'ending' allows you to go back and do more. It's just another challenge in the game. And unless you can motivate yourself in space it probably will be boring for you. I ask for missions, or have fun trading spice and terraforming planets with rare spice. And when that starts to boring (which it hasn't) I'll start annoying my neighbours so I can have fun defending my own planet while trying to kill theirs. I've already annoyed the Grox so they've done a pretty good job of getting rid of 5 out of my 7 colonies.

Hey uh guys. Maybe thats not it. The total ending I mean. I mean, what happens when you use the device 42 times? Does it just die? Or does like, something happen? You know, something?

I thought they would put in a joke ending like they did in the South Park Guitar Hero episode :P
