are there any decent free anti-virus software out there?
« on: August 23, 2008, 02:04:28 pm »
just wondering if there is. when imy dad bought this computer last year, it had mcafee security center, but apparently our "subscription" to it is ended, and we have to probably pay more money to get it back (which sucks).

i'm short on dough right now, and i want to clean out the computer, defrage it, run anti-virus to kill any viruses, and delete useless crap.

is there any free antivirus software out there that can be trusted?

nod32, trial, but you'll eliminate that by reinstalling once a week.

Timid bacteriophage, wears his soul on his sleeve, a mess of proteins, never knows when to leave.

Fixed your post Cow. Think you made a typo.

On topic: I thought you could keep MCafee on your computer if the subscription ended? I thought it just lost the ability to be updated.

A virus scanner that's not up to date is not much better than having no virus scanner at all.

And I second the suggestion of Avast!, I've been using it for a few years now and it works well.

I've totally given up on Anti-virus programs. The old-school viruses aren't produced anymore, these days you either get nothing or you get malicious little things that Norton and other programs simply ignore while they randomly stop your Internet access/games/software/whatever. The only way to get rid of these things when you get them is to troll internet forums for small freeware programs designed for your particular virus(Google has always been my favourite tool for fixing computer problems).

If you, unlike me, haven't been brougth up with failing Windows computers, then I think your best bet is AVG.  :-\

I just got what Limeade was referring to, I'm smrt.  :P
