(in the my computer window)

"Tools->Folder Options->View->Hide extensions for known file types."

set to negative

then you can change file extensions manually.  it doesn't always work.

Does that convert the file or does it just rename the extension? Yes, there is a difference...

Tools->Folder Options->View->Hide extensions for known file types.

Renommez et arrętez.

and that method just changes the extension, hence:

also: non-media-player programs generally won't accept your new file. It'll play in Winamp/Realplayer/Windows/whatever, but, for example, not in San Andreas.

well there is a happy medium.

you can select "save as" and then choose the file type you want.

if that doesn't work, then yes, get a converter.

Ah, just saw this. Very simple solution ... don't use windows media player! ;D

There are tons and tons of audio conversion tools out there. You can even use iTunes to convert to MP3 if you want:

http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/Idocs/Itunes/convertMP3.html

Otherwise you can go to download.com and get an audio conversion program. Or you can use Audacity which is a free audio editing program (you will need to download the MP3 plug-in separately however). But don't try to use WMP, it's just too much of a pain.
