Damnit all, Microsoft!
« on: October 15, 2005, 08:31:08 pm »
I'm having a problem with Windows Media Player 10. It says on the FAQ that I can convert files to MP3 format using this program, but it doesn't say how. That is ******* move number one.

******* move number 2: They charge 35 bucks for email support and 250 dollars for phone support.

I really want to convert my files, if someone could just please tell me how if they know? I've already searched all over the internet.

I don't want to get in a habit of bugging him with all of my problems, I'll just wait and see if he posts here.

Google: Audacity. Great open-source sound editor. Also does conversion.

No, no it isn't. I import the .wma file into the program, but all it comes up with is static for 2 seconds.

Ummm... rename it from SoundFile.wma to SoundFile.mp3 maybe?

That's what I do...  :)
Yeah, [Kishmond] came back from Africa, but the ponies have him now.

Kishmond: Sorry, but you're going to have to be a little more specific. How would I go about doing this?

Tools->Folder Options->View->Hide extensions for known file types.

Renommez et arrętez.

also: non-media-player programs generally won't accept your new file. It'll play in Winamp/Realplayer/Windows/whatever, but, for example, not in San Andreas.

Okay.. specific.

1- Right click on the file
2- Go down to 'Rename'
3- Click on 'Rename'
4- Now the tricky part- backspace the wma in .wma (or whatever extension the file is)
5- Type mp3 (or another extension) after the now lonely dot

Make sure it is an audio file that you are trying to convert, or your speakers will complain loudly when you play it.
Simple enough for you?  ::)

OK, smart guy. In my Windows XP, I don't get to change the file extenstion when I rename it. I can rename it from "Track1.wma" to "AnythingElse.wma" As you can see, I am not able to up and change the extension.

EDIT: Using Samog's useful advice, I was able to perform the act.
