Multiplayer paint although atm no multiplayer.
« on: August 09, 2008, 04:46:56 pm »
So, i was wondering if anyone here likes the idea of creating a multiplayer paint application and share drawings with eachother etc?

Ive coded a basic paint application that can be used to paint with other people. Although the multiplayer works, the actual painting in my application doesn't work 100% (when moving the mouse too fast "gaps" appear i'm going to fix that (hopefully) soon though.

I've made a few vids the past days to show you the progress and the multiplayer vid will be uploaded soon (although its just me drawing on one computer but one acts as server and 3 as clients)

You can watch the video here: http://tinyurl.com/5r4pgp
the sourcecode + downloadable are also available there.

Let me know what you think about it.

It twas alright, the music was a little unnecessary but the actual actions on screen were nice.
I remember there was an application like that but only a limited number to a room.
Kid: Oh wow I'm being deflowered by a grown woman!
Mother: By the way I'm your mother
Kid: OH GOD NO

EDIT: That's where it becomes rape if you were wondering.

Is it one canvas? Or one server? If so, then it could get very, very messy. Nice concept, but I don't think the execution would really work in the real world.

Anyone can host the server. eg you download the app with a few friend of yours and you host it and let your friends connect and draw together. you can save the drawings also so you can continue later with or without your friends or load an existing drawing and continue drawing with other people.

Almost fool proof really, you can invite instead of having tons of members/friends being secluded to one server.

When the bugs are worked out I'm willing to give it a try.

Ah ok. Is it live, like, if I draw something it appears to everyone else in the server?

Neat.  The music was a bit much but, looks like a fun app.

I seem to remember there being an online version of this though.  Not sure if you can have private servers in that one though.

No but everyone that is connected to yours sees what you are drawing and visa versa.

//edit
yes its live, as soon as you draw other people will see it and you see theirs.

OK. Situation.

Person 1 draws a line.

Person 2 sees the line and draws another line. Does the other line appear on person 1's canvas? Or  what if people erase other people's work?

Good question, ive just added an option for the server to enable erase other peoples lines or not. From now on it is also possible to draw animated scenes that you can play in the movie player (options -> play scene -> load drawings) this way you can create small animated scenes that can be shown in the player. I'll upload the latest version soon on my site here www.javaforums.net / www.engineeringserver.com and let me know what you think of my app. any suggestions/comments are welcome to improve the application.

Might be true, but atleast this one is 100% coded by me
