The KH Universe: Everything you need to know.
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:13:23 pm »
I know what you're thinking, "KH oh no!, Run for the Hills!" but don't jump to conclusions.

So the premise of this is to show you the creatures, characters and worlds of KH so you can get a better understanding of the story and content within the games. I have a good amount of experience with the history so this can be a place for questions as well for first timers to the game series. Seriously, if you want to bash KH2 or any other title give good reason, don't shun it if you haven't even played any of the games.

I know people have there criticisms of KH2 and the series as a whole for that matter, but try and give it a chance. It's not really that bad, great story, decent gameplay, nice replay value, and amazing soundtrack; you don't come across something like this everyday so try and give it a shot.

So without further adieu!

*Edit*
For the most part this thread will be periodically updated with content by me or any other member that wants to contribute. Just remember go with the current theme of the conversation so we don't get caught in a contusion of other games in the series. If you have general questions you'd like to ask don't be afraid, I don't bite send me a PM ;)

If I don't have the answer (and sometimes I won't, I can't answer everything :P), check out the KH Wiki page for more in depth info!

Hollow Bastion

One of the last frontiers for our KH hero Sora and friends Goofy and Donald.

A once beautiful castle at a time, but corrupted by darkness and factory construction.
The main features of the castle is it's large smoke stacks spewing some sort of crystallized energy that fills the air. Also a a beautiful yet grotesque feature of the castle is it's giant heart in the middle of the structure; part factory part stone castle. With its corruption you will notice the curvatures in the castles towers, most of them deteriorated too much to be stable housing so they're used as smoke stacks as well.

Most of the castle lack floors so locomotion is made by energy point laser guided platforms.
Since there are so many, the direction of the trolleys can be changed by crystals near the lifts of the platforms.

Below the castle lies the Rising falls and the Secret Water Ways. But even farther down below that is some sort of crystal formation that mirrors the top of Hollow Bastion, to this day it is shrouded in mystery (it could have been just used for ascetic design for the artwork, or it could have some history that hasn't been revealed just yet).

Rising Falls.

The first rest area for our heroes in Hollow Bastion. From in game it looks like a giant crevasse whilst water flowing up the canyon walls; a strange feet but also has an tranquil beauty. North of the initial save point is a floor made of condensed water allowing sora to walk upon it. Continue northward you will see floating bubbles, touch one and you can go under the condensed water layer to search for chests.

Continue on and there are magically floating ice like platforms from which you can jump onto eventually leading you to the platform to the castle itself which is an amazing sight to behold. This haven in a world of darkness is one of the only few places that has been basically untouched by the heartless.

Darkball.

One of the few pureblooded heartless encountered later in KH.
With it's fearsome appearance comes it's gruesome attack pattern, one of the most erratic of all the heartless encountered.

It's known abilities are basic teleportation, it will warp in and out of battle constantly making it a frustrating foe; don't underestimate them. When they do calm down beware! they use there powerful teeth to charge at you and can take a significant chunk of heath out of your HP bar. But if you are in reach attack immediately as it is very hard to get them in attack range; if that tactic doesn't work than use magic attacks from a far.

You first encounter them in Hollow bastion usually in groups of 3 to 6 and other heartless such as the Defenders and wizards. However you will see them more commonly in starter worlds such as Traverse Town, Deep Jungle and even the Wonderland World. In the line of pureblooded heartless it is a step up from a Neoshadow but a step down from an Invisible.

Item Drops

20HP orbs and 30MP orbs, 1 munny (before rescue) 5 munny after:
Secondary Items include: Mega Ether (10%), Hi- Potion (1%), Lucid Crystal (1%)

Wizard

As the name applies this heartless is adept in magic, and with that it is one of the most annoying enemies to defeat in your first encounter (unless you've leveled up a great deal before hand).

As a magic master they know almost every spell Sora does excluding heal and aero.
And with that in mind magic attacks have no effect on it(except Stop and Gravity, gravity does little damage however) so physical is the only way to defeat them, but even achieving physical contact is hard with these foes. Like there heartless cousins of the bell variety these enemies float in the air making them hard to hit, so when you're close enough take and and swing away with your keyblade.

Luckily they're not that fast but don't underestimate that as there attacks are powerful especially it's thunder spell as it's invincible until the rain of lightning bolts stop; to avoid damage keep attacking it (keep in mind the heartless still takes no damage, it's just something you can do to avoid getting hurt during it's attack).

Last thing to note is it's teleporting ability it uses when it has low damage, that's what makes fighting them tricky. If you're lucky by chance when getting out of there warp they will stall and the target reticule will appear giving you a chance at a counter attack, use that chance always!

Item Drops:
They drop 45 MP orbs, items that are in inventory are Ether, Shiny Crystal and the Wizards Relic (staff for Donald, 0.2% drop rate)

Trivia
  • As the Defender is a Goofy themed heartless the Wizard is Donald's as it uses magic and has similar stances during battle.

Now you probably wonder why I put this thread in the Everything Else Section, 2 reasons: This is one of the most popular areas of the Gaming Steve realm, 2 being that the console game section barely gets any activity and the activity now is just E3 stuff so squeezing my thread in there would mean it would die, very very quickly :P

Besides most of the time Console section is practically dead.

Why contribute to it being "dead".

You can do your part by trying to revitalize it, rather than putting a thread where it doesn't belong just for the popularity.

Everything Else
"If it doesn't fit anywhere else place it here."

It fits just fine in the console games section.

Behemoth
One of larger heartless from the orginal Kingdom Hearts game.It is seen as a powerful and difficult heartless.Despite being a powerful heartless its main weakness is the large horn located on its head, which you can hit with ease providing you doge its head moving. The best way to beat this heartless to leap directly onto its back and run along untill you reach its horn, remember to dodge its head as it moves,if you get knocked off and its moving too fast for you to jump on its back try jumping on to its large thighs as a means of getting on to its back.

This heartless is only found after you progress futher on in the game and unlock the final Keyhole. Its possible to find this heartless (once the conidtions are met) in Hollow bastion,"End of worlds" and "Olympus Coliseum". Oddly enough no Behemoths are present in KH2,although in final Mix(japen only :'() the player could fight different types of Behemoths.

Great job on Behemoth Ultimatum ;)

Defender

These guys are sort of like the Big Daddy's when it comes to enemy strength, watch out for them at all times.

As large and slow as these enemies are they are very strong as brute force is highly used, but most of there strength isn't there own. For the most part the shield does the work, it has a mind of its own so to speak. Since it can attack within range watch out for the shields jaws as they can cause significant damage. It's wise to always defend during this time as when you do the defender lifts his shield when you parry one of his attacks take that chance to finish it off (if at low damage), or attack from behind. One of the other more aggravating attacks is it's spin attack (reminiscent to Goofy's Tornado attack)

One other thing to note is that as good as it is close range it does have a couple long range attacks as well, making group battles tricky as not paying attention to them on the field can leave you with avoidable damage. It's two long range attacks is a slow moving Fira attack and the second is some sort of blizzara attack (a mist like projection from its shield), they're slow moving but can only be parried with a guard (square button when the ability is on) or a counter attack from close range (they do use magic at close range as well, specifically the blizzara spell).

(Partial spoiler)
First encounter with these foes is a risky proposition as in the beginning of the expedition of Hollow Bastion you're physically impaired so magic is you're only option, make sure you pick up ether's and elixirs before hand to better prepare yourself. Still don't get to righteous, let Beast take care of most of the work until you get the Keyblade back.

After the events of Hollow Bastion they are less common there as the darkness has spread to other worlds so places like Traverse Towns and early levels consist of them along with the likes of other heartless from Hollow Bastion.

Item Note:
There is a 5% chance of the the heartless to drop his shield as a drop item for Goofy to use in combat. Usual item drops are 40 HP balls,80 Munny, and items Elixir, Bright Crystal, and the Defender Shield.

Trivia
  • This heartless (like the wizard to Donald) represents the moves of ally Goofy, shield and all including stances and attack patterns.

Wyvern
Wyverns are flying heartless that swoop down and knock you off your balance, they are  effecive at knocking you off ledges and and sending  you to the abyess below.Like the Darkballs,Behemoths, defenders and wizards they are all located in Hallow bastion,it should be pointed out that only darkballs return in KH2,where as defenders and wizards are replaced by a different heartless. And like all the heartless in Hollow bastion it is powerful,so keep your guard up.One thing to remember with Wyverns is that lightning is effective againest them, you also jump and swipe at them, just be careful that when you do so your not near a ledge or they move out of reach and you fall. They drop large amounts of health orbs which is useful since the heartless here are very powerful.Wyverns also drop the odd power power crystals or two.

Main Hall

It's appearance is similar to a ballroom albeit  smaller size.
Still this place isn't an area for rest as it is heartless infested so don't lower your guard here.

(Spoilers)
At first the door out side of the main hall is locked, but after the endeavours of the secret water ways the door is unlocked. Once you go through you activate a cutscene between you and Riku, you eventually acquire your keyblade back from him and due battle with your long time friend.
In general this is a place for very important cutscenes.

The 3 main outlets in this area is the one to the Library (downstairs) another upstairs (after completing the puzzle within the library) and the last door that require pieces to open that leads to the Lift Stop.

Lift Stop

One of the Central hubs of the castle, and by far one of the most confusing areas in the entire world.

As the name applies, it is used as a main way of transportation between floors of the inner parts of Hollow Bastion. But with so many floors and rooms it can get very confusing, and without a guide book or some sort of supervision it could take ages to get through to the core of the castle (took me nearly a week to get it figure out -_-)

The Castle Chapel.
When Malificent used Hallow bastion as her hideout she used this room to gather togeather the Villains from the first Kingdom hearts, they also watched Sora as he progressed through the game. You  fight Malificent for the first time in this room. When fighting her wait until her shield is down and attack, she will continue to move between the two Platforms.Hollowbastion is somehow connected to the heartless, judging from all the heartless Emblems displaced around the bastion. One other question the player would ask at this point "what is the meaning of the heartless Emblems"? and what is responceable for the heartless, beating Malificent will unlock the 5th page in Ansem's report, donald Duck  will also learn the Cheer abilty.

Spoilers.
Hollow bastion is where is where it all began, where Ansem first began his experiments on the heart. The heartless which display the Heartless Emblem are artificial, created using a machine, the emblem was used by Ansem to show the difference between his ones and the pure breed heartless. The true heartless are the ones which do not display Ansem's Emblem.Hollow bastion plays an important role in the KH storyline,it should also be noted that many of Final fantasy characters consider Hollow bastion to be their home before it was overrun by heartless.

This is a fun thread. I really enjoy this series.
Lot of folks seem to hate its guts though, and those are the ones I consistently run into when I attempt to bring it up.

I don't talk to people about games very much anymore.

The worst part is many who hate it have never played it.

I remember getting harassed by some clans on a message board for battlefield. They kept wanting to challenge me or poke at me or something. Anyway i told them KH2 just came out so i would not be around for awhile. All i heard is yeah you can't play areal game you have to go off and play DISNEY. Have fun with DISNEY. Go play your kiddie game etc.

Its all i heard when i left and when i came back...

Still, Gec, if you ever consider getting a ps2 (which is at a good price) pick up the first 1 in the series.

Maleficent was the mastermind behind the council of Disney villains seen in Kingdom Hearts such as Hades, Captain Hook, Oogie Boogie, Ursula, and Jafar. Pete, as her then-unseen henchman, had helped assembly this group and was off building an army of Heartless for her. Acting as a guide, Maleficent warned each of her followers that they should be wary of the darkness. She led this group in pursuit of ultimate power by controlling the Heartless and unlocking the Keyhole that leads to Kingdom Hearts, the heart of all worlds.

She used Hollow Bastion, the former home of Ansem the Wise, as a base of operations where she directed the affairs of the group. She used Ansem's report to help her control the Heartless and recruited Riku, Sora's best friend, to her side. Once she saw that Riku could wield a Keyblade, she used the darkness in Riku's heart to corrupt him and turn him against his friends.

Maleficent eventually told Riku her plans to find Kingdom Hearts, involving the Princesses of Heart. Maleficent persuaded Riku to go after Kairi, as she is also a Princess. Maleficent lied to Riku and told him that she'd help Kairi regain her heart once she had control of the Kingdom Hearts.

Boss Stats:
  • HP: 900
  • Attack: 31
  • Defense: 24
  • MP Recovery: 47
  • Experience Points: 6,000

Ability Resistance:
  • Fire efficiency is reduced to 49%
  • Blizzard efficiency is reduced to 50%
  • Gravity efficiency is reduced to 2%
  • Stop efficiency is reduced to 20%
  • Abilities that knock out the opponent have an efficiency of 50% (Basically combo finishers.)
  • Other Abilities have an efficiency of 50%

Boss Strategy:

You first encounter with this vileness is a tough one but with these strategy it's you key to success.

First thing you will notice is the floating platform that maleficent stands on.
It's too high in the air to get in affective hits on her so you'll have to wither down the platform first.
Physical punishment could do the job but the easiest way is to use the gravity spell on it to bring it down.

Tip: as the platform comes down, don't stand under it as you will take damage.
If you are an effective guard should prevent damage.

Take the time to widdle her health down with strikes or magic, if you do use magic the most affective spells are Blizzard and Fire, they do the job but aren't magic cost effective so don't spam them unless you have a large about of ether's in you item inventory in the command bar. Still take caution as you can get in a certain amount of combos in until Maleficent starts to resist. Watch her arm carefully as she has a powerful strike attack with her staff. In battle she will also spawn heartless, but ignore them and let your party handle it.

Sooner or later she gets more offensive with her attacks and casts a powerful Dark Meteor, try and avoid this with distance. One neat trick you can do is stand near her on either side just far away enough on the edge to avoid the attack altogether. But one of her more annoying means of evasion is teleporting. She'll disappear while her platform is still active, don't jump on the platform as it has a mind of it's own, if you do it will quickly spin you off but don't fret it causes no damage.

With this plan you can take her down quite easily, just follow the basic steps:

  • Knock down the platform to make her venerable.
  • Watch out for her Meteor attack and close range physical attacks.
  • Ignore the heartless and attack her with offensive magic.
  • Rinse,repeat.

Winners Spoils:

You receive Ansem's Report 5 and Donald earns the ability Cheer

Cheer: Increases Summons MP gauge thus increasing attack effectiveness.

Hope this guide provides you with everything you need folks!

Right now Kaizer :D

Also to note, unlike my previous boss lowdown this was pretty much ripped from the KH wiki.
I would have done it myself but typing all that would have put more strain on my eyes, one of which popped a blood vessel so it's hard to see.

Just the utterance of his name is enough to make some of the most righteous and powerful swordsman tremble in fear as Sephiroth is arguably the hardest boss of KH1. You'd expect a lack of control with his giant Masamune, but it's the exact opposite. Don't EVER let your guard down when fighting him, some of his most basic sword swipes can be crippling and even kill in one blow in some cases.

History

Once revered as a hero (in the FF7 universe) he sought out the darkness and betrayed his allies, Zack and most importantly Cloud. Sephiroth is one of the many enhanced SOLDIERS made by Hojo (Scientist that worked for Shin-Ra and in a sense Sephiroth's father), as a super soldier of war he has abilities that surpasses the average human.

But with that power came the corruption of his mind and soul. With a power drip something forseen by Hojo and his associates his motives were to use the Lifestream as a rig to destroy the planet scourer the universe and create a new one in his image. However his plans were thwarted by Cloud and other AVALANCHE members who rose up against Shin-Ra and eventually Sephiroth himself.

Attacks:

Horizontal Slash
Description: Sephiroth's basic sword slash. Covers a long reach and has a wide arc, but can easily be deflected or jumped over.
Damage: Medium~High (depending on exposure)

Teleport Slash
Description: The second Sora delivers the finishing combo, Sephiroth will vanish and flashes behind Sora to deliver a sword slash. (teleport period approximately about 1~2 seconds.)
Damage: Medium; blockable

Stigma
Description: Sephiroth conjures three flame pillars around him. Using a special move like Ars Arcanum or Strike Raid will make Sora invincible to this attack, so it is recommended to use such techniques if you get caught in it. Sephiroth in turn is highly vulnerable while performing this move.
Damage: Medium~Very High (depending on exposure)

Heartless Angel (I bolded this one for good reason >_>)
Description: Sephiroth's trademark attack, used when around 70% of his first lifebar is shaved away. Drains Sora's HP to 1 and MP to 0. Can be interrupted if Sephiroth is hit while casting this attack. Sephiroth actually says "Heartless Angel" before using this attack, so listen carefully for it. It is best to strike him before the halo around him completes, as this will interrupt the casting. If damaged while performing this move, Sephiroth will immediately use Stigma.
Damage: Varies (no matter how much damage Sora has taken it can only reduce his HP to 1)

Omnislash
Description: Sephiroth does a frenzy of standing and leaping blows, then leaps up and does a finisher. Be wary of the last blow, because it does a great deal of damage. However, the blows are not entirely consecutive, so Sora can avoid many of them with properly timed guards and dodge rolls.
Damage: High~Fatal (depending on hits taken)

Shadow Flare
Description: Sephiroth will conjure dozens of dark orbs to surround him. The orbs serves as his shield and a distraction for a spinning sword slash. He often uses this moves many times in succession.
Damage: Medium~High (depending on exposure)

SuperNova
Description: Sephiroth's ultimate attack, his body emits a glowing white aura and he summons several meteors, which surround and orbit around him. A black hole later appears above his head and absorbs all the rocks, whom later releases a meteor homing Sora. The initial meteors can be avoided by running around them, and the last attack requires quite a bit of timing to dodge.
Damage: High~Fatal (depending on exposure)

Battle Strategy:

Preparation for the fight

Sephiroth is easily the hardest boss in the original Kingdom Hearts and a great deal of preparation is needed. First, Strike Raid, Second Chance, Dodge Roll and MP Rage are absolutely essential. If possible, equip two MP Rage, meaning, unless you chose the staff, you'll have to be at Level 66 to earn the second MP Rage. Otherwise, being above Level 55 is best. Do not equip any other special abilities like Ragnarok or Sonic Blade. Equip any other abilities to boost Sora's power like Berserk and Critical Plus. Scan is useful, as it lets you see Sephiroth's HP and know when he's about to enter the next phase of the battle, but there are other signs to let you know this. If possible, equip the Ultima Weapon keychain, but otherwise equip weapons to boost Sora's MP and magic abilities. Oathkeeper, Lionheart or Lady Luck work for this by increasing Sora's max MP while still giving a strong attack. Also equip as many Elixirs as possible, or Megalixirs if you are out of Elixirs, and be sure to get Curaga from Aerith in Hollow Bastion. Finally, equip accessories to boost Sora's defense and HP. Gaia Bangles or Omega Arts work for this. Also note that all of Sephiroth's attacks except for Stigma count as the dark element, so equipping armor to resist that element will help greatly.

  • Phase One
For the first part of the battle, Sephiroth walks around the arena performing his Horizontal Slash and Stigma attacks, usually using the former when you come close. It is possible, by leaping towards him to avoid his Horizontal Slash, to hit Sephiroth with a combo, although you should Dodge Roll after hitting him to avoid his Teleport Slash. At this time, simply chip away at Sephiroth's HP with normal attacks, and heal when needed as MP Rage will restore your HP when you are attacked. It is important to note that while Sephiroth has six health bars, only five will show up, so your first attacks will only appear to do no damage, but actually are. Once Sephiroth's purple health bar is depleted, he holds out his hand and says "Come on", signaling he is entering his second phase of attack.

  • Phase Two
Sephiroth begins dashing around the arena very quickly, frequently using Teleport Slash. His first move upon entering this phase is to teleport and cast Heartless Angel. It is vital to hit him with Strike Raid at this time. The casting animation for Heartless Angel involves a halo appearing around Sephiroth. If you can attack him before the halo completes, you can stop the casting. Even if he successfully starts to casts it, continue to attack him. If hit while casting Heartless Angel, Sephiroth will go into a Stigma right away, giving you enough time to use an Elixir and heal yourself. If you can't hit Sephiroth in time to stop him, your only chance is to retreat while guarding and dodge rolling, as he runs towards you and attacks right afterwards with no time for you to heal. Sephiroth uses Heartless Angel periodically during this phase, so listen carefully for him to call the attack and stop him.

Sephiroth's other tactics are to simply run around the arena using Teleport Slash frequently. His other new move, Omnislash, hits very quickly and can be difficult to survive. You can cast Curaga during the attack, but he'll likely attack you and stop you before you can cast it. A better option is to hit him with Strike Raid when he calls out the attack, as you are invincible during Strike Raid and thus can become immune to his many slashes. Otherwise, repeatedly use Dodge Roll. The first hits of Omnislash can also be guarded. After using Omnislash, Sephiroth immediately teleports and uses Heartless Angel.

In general for Phase Two, always have at least two MP so you can use Strike Raid, and keep your HP high. With MP Rage, Sephiroth will be causing you so much damage, he'll be restoring your MP quickly so keeping your MP up should not be a problem. When Sephiroth is down to his yellow health bar, he will summon a green and black aura, signalling the final phase of the battle.

  • Phase Three
Sephiroth's final phase begins with him casting SuperNova. The meteors can be dodged with moderate difficulty. When Sephiroth begins the attack's end, target him and use Strike Raid - this will not damage him as Sephiroth is invincible while using SuperNova, but will make you immune to the attack's final hit. The final hit can also be dodged with proper timing by Dodge Rolling behind Sephiroth as he uses it. Sephiroth will also begin using Shadow Flare quite often and start erratically teleporting while spinning and slashing, leaving Shadow Flares in his wake. Although this seems daunting to avoid, during this time, Sephiroth is vulnerable. Instead, you can use Strike Raid, both avoiding damage and hitting him at the same time. This is perhaps the opportune moment to hit Sephiroth.

Sephiroth also retains all the attacks from his previous two phases. He still casts Heartless Angel, but no longer calls out the name of the move, making it vital to keep him targeted to know when he's casting it. Sephiroth also still uses Omnislash, and may even use it twice in a row. He still uses Stigma when interrupted while casting Heartless Angel.

Although this is easily Sephiroth's most dangerous form, the damage all of his moves can be minimized with deft dodging and usage of Strike Raid to exploit its temporary invincibility. Since he may still be landing hits on you quite often, your MP should be high throughout the phase, and healing yourself and attacking should be no trouble. As long as you can react to Sephiroth's moves quickly with the appropriate counter, you can defeat him. Focus on getting in hits whenever possible, while surviving his attacks using Curaga and Strike Raid and he will eventually be defeated.

Sadly, for a secret boss, all that effort results in no winners spoils other than 18,000 exp.
But at least you can fight him for just a challenge :P

Next boss will be another secret boss, stay tuned ^^
