Pietoro's Menagerie
« on: June 27, 2008, 12:13:13 pm »
Hey all, I've seen several users that I like on Sporepedia with the GamingSteve tag on their creatures, so I figured this may be a good place to get some serious critiques on my creatures. =)
Having a creature that animates well is one of my goals, so if you see any that could be improved in that area, please let me know.

Here are my current creatures that I feel are my best that I'd like feedback on, please be blunt :)

Cavecanari

Brumby

Harpyscree

Grassclopper

Pangu

Baroon

Garropda

After reading how the Prima guide says red-complexity creatures can't be used in the Creature Phase, I edited several of mine into the yellow zone. Not sure if I like all the results, but w/ev. I make a lot of creatures as 'food chain' fodder so I figured it was better safe than sorry in that department.

My full Sporepedia is here. Rates and comments are always appreciated. =)

Someone on the other forum I go to got the Prima Guide and listed stuff they learned from it. It said Red creatures can only be used in Tribal Phase and above.

Now, I'm not 100% sure that it's all accurate info, but I wanted to be safe. I liked my old Garropda (last creature) better before, he lost his decorative heel spikes in order to make it in under red. =/ Most of mine actually only lost stuff like that, and some of my hexapods are quads now.

I'm pretty sure we can still use them since the outrage that would be expected on the pirma topic isn't there.
So go on , creatures at max complexity forever.

Boo. Oh well, changing them was good practice on how to get the same look with less, at any rate. =/

This is the creature I'm going to start with once I get the game, I think. He has a nice gait:

Vespik

Some more:

Sudali

Caprina

A tiny guy: Oddjea. I submitted him to a 'Cutest Creature' contest on another forum, so I have a video of him, too:

Your starter creature is too cool, even though he's a biped he's very original. I think it's the way you made the mouth look like an extention of the head rather than just stuck on there(the striped works very well). Your other ones are great as well.

Thanks! He's from an old drawing of mine, It was cool to be able to remake him 'in real life'. =)

Latest:
I loved the super-lean body shape of AhavoRaboTaco's Shrekon, so I modified the torso into this guy, Shaira:

One more 'food chain' herbie, Skwee. I like how his paintjob turned out snow leopard-like:

I know what you mean! Most of my creatures start as drawings, and I can't wait to see them in 'real life'.
And once again, more awesome creatures. Nice tail on the 'herbie', and the patterning looks awesome.  8)

New batch. I've been trying to focus mostly on herbivores lately:

Jayaay

Kamyena (Omnivore, an alien hyena-type)

Biarja

Tiffinda. I love how it runs. =)

I've been wanting to make some nice looking monopods, which seem to be uncommon:

Xhoeb. I like how it moves; very kangaroo-like with the tail.

Emidon. A cuter take.

Thanks! Those three are among my top favorites as well. =)

Pechemin. An alien unicorn! =D

Chomin. I wanted to make something mean and pink. >=)

Caidu. I'm sad because the head doesn't animate correctly when walking. =(

Kiegai. A frog. Has a cool gait! I got it entirely by accident and can't replicate it on anything else yet...

Obbis. I LOVE his gait, the fifth leg in the middle makes him skip when he walks! =D

I've also been on a bit of a tripod kick lately:

Dolige.

Rucah. A prey herbivore.

Gernaja. I've noticed I don't make many creatures with significant tails...

Nice work. Downloaded a few more! I love the gait on most of your creatures.
My first three creatures I made don't animate as well as I'd like because I wasn't even aware that slight changes could make the gait so much better. Then I saw your creatures and realized I could improve on that. Haha.

Thanks, having my creatures animate well is one of the things I strive for. =)

Lembax, a tiny herbivore. I like making really small creatures, they're simple but fun.

Naylasp... a wierd omnivorous bird-thing. The colors remind me of Skittles. =P

Another 'snackbeast' herbivore. Basically defenseless. >=)

Jazello. I want to make a really huge creature, but they always end up smaller than I'd planned.

Kestep.

Pretty good creations there :)

I did make a few 'fodderbeasts' or 'snackbeasts' as you called them, relatively defenseless herbivores really.

I got the crest by accident by playing with the fins. =) I'm finding that just randomly messing with details sometimes brings about cool results.

Crish. The Complexity Meter got in the way of what I wanted to do with fins, but it turned out okay, I think.

Uroux. Just another snackbeast. =)

Mangaith. Made this one from scratch but its body looks like a copy of Molongo's I think...

Prokwei... a parrot-dragon. I liked how the color turned out. For some reason getting it to walk properly took forever, not sure what my problem was, lol.

Phomba! I love stilt-walker type creatures...

Magping. Amphibious kappa-type guy.

Kiartod. One of my rare carnivores. =P
You can't see his tail or spots from his card pic, unfortunately. He's a nice metallic copper color ingame. His head is slightly procanim bugged, but in a cool way, imo.

Well, I had a go through as much of your SP profile as I could (people here are so generous with comments its really hard keeping up).  I really liked Crish!  I thought that was simply awesome.  Omatodi is very good also, I like his posture and how you have positioned his arms.  Thx for your comments also ;D

I also tend to do mostly armless bipeds.
I think they sometimes look more 'streamlined' without them.

Thyliel. Colors! =D

Ezelon

Qhalie

I wanted to make a lot of random flying creatures after seeing that Gamereactor video. =P

Kolbrektas.

A cartoony dragon guy.

Kwarax. A griffin. I like the colors, but not 100% happy with it structurally...

Bittyjay. Super tiny!

The new batch!

Ibithamba

Brukune. Would a creature with that shape actually be able to fly? In my world it can! xD

Nehes

More minis (They have only a 2 vertebrae torso):

Taton

Ikouti

I want to make an uber killing-machine carnivorous mini creature next. >=)

Thanks! =) I'm incredibly picky about paint jobs... it's kind of embarrassing how much time I spend just on coloring some of them. ~_~;

Hecta. An omnivore I kind of envision to be rather like a raccoon in lifestyle.

Shantod.
A mini carnivore. Not quite uber, but he's fairly capable. >=)

Kalliago. Another humanoid I'd like to play in Civ someday.

Gosrida. I discovered it's hard for me to color a creature without using contrasting/strong colors... It was very hard restraining that impulse for this guy. xD His tail reminds me of something that should be on a Final Fantasy monster.

Isiren. The puffs on his legs are fuzzy pheromone pickups.

More great Creatures as usual.

BTW, I downloaded Caidu and I wouldn't be to worried about the head sway. I thought it totally added to the creatures character. It's awesome!

Mird. I finally had an excuse to use the pinwheel tail! =)

that Peekasqeak is pretty cute all right :)

Too bad that we can't domesticate animals just to make them pets or something.

Ah, thanks! It's cool to hear which are other people's favorites. =)
I should've made Baroon an omnivore tho, lots of people seem to think he's an herbivore. They're gonna be surprised ingame. xD

I tried to make a See Rex. I guess it turned out all right. It was painful making a creature that was just shades of gray, but I wanted to stay close to the original picture. I still think I can tweak it to be better, I may end up redoing it later.

A demon-like creature, Speren.

Shres. Just a lanky guy. =)

Chaniten. Colors! xD His spikes move in cool ways when he's animating anything other than walking...

That See Rex is a pretty good likeness :) Grey is never a fun colour to work with lol.
Chaniten is great too, its nice to see someone else that uses upside down mouths :D

Keep up the good work.

Rafowa

Lobinopda

Lizai Giant alien hamster ftw

Yazmisp. I had to make a sea monkey too. =P

Pasanion

And a remake of an older creature I made that I didn't like much:

Torks

I may take a break before Spore comes out, I'm running out of inspiration lately.

I don't know why... but I have the strange feeling I might have inspired you to work with limbs... ::) probably not. :'(

I do like the beetles leg proportions alot. The other creatures are great as usual, but I don't have enough time to say EVERYTHING I like about all of them.
The mind is a terrible thing to waste...

Lies! I'm inspired by everyone; and I almost always learn something new when I see your stuff. =)
It's always good to see people doing more creative things with the parts, it raises the bar for my own work, in my mind.
