Looking for a new multiplayer strategy game
« on: June 20, 2008, 08:20:28 pm »
Hi, I know these kind of threads can get kind of annoying, but I read this forum a lot and think its a good place for this.

So basically, I'm looking for a new strategy game to play with a focus on lan multiplayer. Ever since I bought Dawn of War several months ago I have been getting into strategy games again. I used to play them all the time, but college has really made it hard to get into them. I used to play a lot of Total War games (I still think that Rome:TW is one of the best games ever made) and a lot of Rise of Nations. While I really enjoy the epic scale of these games, after playing DoW for a while I've decided that smaller scale games can be fun too. I've played all the greats, like Warcraft, Starcraft, and Age of Empires but I'm tired of their old formulaic gameplay.

I've been playing the Sins of a Solar Empire demo the last couple days. It seems like a good game, but something keeps me from being really excited about it. If someone could try to sell the game to me, that would also be great.

Oh yeah, and I'm using a laptop with a dualcore 1.5ghz centrino and a crappy intel graphics card. It sucks, i know.

RTS isn't strategy in my opinion, it's just produce blah blah as many as possible, throw at enemy, rinse and repeat.

What are you looking for? RTS or TBS?

Either is fine, though i find that RTS games tend to be better for multiplayer (it's much harder to find a person who is willing to sit down and play a 10 hour turned-based multiplayer game  :P)

Yes it's fun. With traitors galour(Spelling?).

Hmm... RTS. Been a while since I played one now that I think about it. Command and Conquer 3 is your basic build-up and knock-em-out game.

If thats what you think then you are doing it wrong.

Of course their are a few like that. Most aren't.

Anyway i would suggest Universe at war, Company of heroes, The first Empire earth and Age of mythology.

EE3 is a major no before you play it though.

Company of Heroes has to be one of the best RTSs i've ever played.

I disown every empire earth except the original and its expansion. Its a shame the first EE was great but not one sequel was ruined. TWO sequels were ruined.

I would definitely suggest Civilization IV. Great game and involves LOTS of strategy. Then we might also have another player for the games.

Also Bumpy. You keep calling me a traitor, and then i keep saying we never had any ties and then you say "Yes, but we were setting the 'foundation' for good relations" or some other jibber jabber. All i can say is, a foundation, while a good place to start, is not the actual thing. We may have had a good beginning but no true alliance was made.

And that's all i have to say about that...

Get Civilization IV, it's the best strategy game i can think of.

There's always Dwarf Fortress if you've got the time to learn the cliff-face learning curve.

How is Civ4 multiplayer? Does it take forever to finish a game?

I wish I could play company of heroes. My brother actually owns the game and doesn't play it, but unfortunately it doesn't run well on my laptop  :(

Yes it can take some time, depending on the number of players and what the settings are. We've only ever actually finished one game (that i was involved in at least), but we've slowly been changing the settings to allow for faster gameplay.
