[RG] The Vykusi (Vote Now!)
« on: June 13, 2008, 04:53:59 pm »
Biology

This is a rough sketch of a Vykusi  I made a while back.

It's from aquatic origins and can use the back arms to good effect while swimming.
The two stalk eyes are actually used to determine if an object is hot or cold.  It does because by seeing the amount of infrared coming off an object, though it can't use them to see what an object is, only the heat.  The front eyes are actually spots made to confuse predators. The real eyes are the two large yellow eyes on its sides. They are positioned to allow a near 360 degree view of its surroundings.
The dots behind the whiskers are ear holes.

Digestive

1.Mouth, works in conjunction with the tongue.
2.Tongue,  brings food into the mouth the same way that a cat drinks water.
3.Stomach,  not very different from a humans.
4.Pancreas, for insulin.
5.Liver, performs the same thousand plus functions a human liver does.
6.Gall bladder, for holding excess gall.
7.Nutrient absorption tube, villi at work.
8.Renal organ, prevents the build up of toxins in the blood. (Kidney equivalent, except it all comes out the same place.)
9.Water reclamation organ,  absorbs water.
10.Anus, solid, liquid and gaseous waste come out here.
Cardio-Respiratory

(the arteries aren't really that thick, it's just a representation)

Skelton

The front two arms have two joints each, while the back two arms have only one joint each.  They can be bet to about perpendicular to its body The central area is a rib cage-skull cross.  The back feet has almost no bone in the talons, and the front two feet have two short toes, but you can't tell from the outside.  There is no bone in the mouth on the front.

Reproduction
See top of next page.

Religion
The Vykusi religion is centered around the worship of nature spirit gods.  Each one represents a region of Vyku.
Om, the ocean goddess and the creator of life, born in a cataclysmic tidal wave.  Inherently benevolent, most people prefer to worship her.
Wi, the volcano god and the destroyer of lives, born in a volcanic eruption.  Inherently malevolent, though he does have followers.
Ro, the god of the plains, dug his way up from the ground.
Ko, the goddess of the marshes, lives at the bottom of a pond.

Communication

It communicates through a series of whistles.  Its "mouth" is only used for eating and it breathes through a hole on the tip of the bump on the mouth, (a nose of sorts since it can also smell with it).  Because of the unique respiratory system the Vykusi employ, they can easily create whistles at varying frequencies with great accuracy. The pitch is changed pitch by pressing and pulling the breathing tube.  It does this with its tongue, colored green in the digestive and basic pictures.

I also have the planet worked but my scanner gave out on me. Oh well.

Update:

Planet
The planets name is Vyku.  It is extremely geologically active (the red spots are crustal weak points and volcanoes).  There is a lot of forested areas(dark green) and areas with very few trees(yellow green).  The planet is so close it's ice caps are extremely small.  On Vyku there is so much moisture in the air that deserts are non-existent.  There are also a lot of small islands(the brown dots).  The planet revolves around its sun Xwi every .86 Earth years.  It has two moons, Mai and Ras.

Back from the dead with an update not that I have any fans
Solar System
Not to scale
Xwi The sun of the the solar system, a yellow colored main sequence star.

Moni A small dusty world similar to our Mercury except a slightly thicker atmosphere.

Xoki  Lots of CO2 make this planet hot.  Lots of volcanoes.

Vyku  Home of the Vykusi.  Is geologically active and has no ice caps due to proximity to its sun.
Mai  A small moon of Vyku
        Ras  Slightly larger

Paku Asteroid Belt  Where two planets collided during the solar systems formation, Pani and Taku.

Ryki  Slightly larger than Jupiter, but is colored like Saturn.
        Rite  Biggest moon of Ryki.
Ura  Second largest, with ice caps.
Reto  Volcanic moon that is tidally locked to its planet.
Lena  Captured asteroid from Paku Asteroid Belt

Syku  Large comet, nothing special until visible in night sky.

Nice stuff, like how you made the planets and out them in there right places.
Kid: Oh wow I'm being deflowered by a grown woman!
Mother: By the way I'm your mother
Kid: OH GOD NO

Finally some feedback, I really need to work on the reproduction.  I'm trying to think of a unique way of doing it but all the unique ways are taken.

Well, there's something to be said for convention. If it works, it works, you can leave the exotic intricacies of love making to the creatures themselves. :)

What exactly do you mean.  It even says in the NG rules you need a clearly defined method of reproduction.

I'm just saying that you don't have to rack your brain trying to come up with something new and different. Pick something that is logical and that you know will work.

But I don't really do this Spore stuff so I could be wrong. Still, I don't think anyone would care if their means of reproduction was nothing special.

Take the following examples of reproduction from animals.
Something!

Like Pat said, don't rack your brains out over this; just find something that sticks.
Kid: Oh wow I'm being deflowered by a grown woman!
Mother: By the way I'm your mother
Kid: OH GOD NO

EDIT: That's where it becomes rape if you were wondering.

How about: Once every Vykusian year (.86 Earth years), a male Vykusi will go to the nearest shore and spawn out genetic material into the ocean.  A few days later the female will do the same thing.  After the two come together they form a small soft shelled egg.  The eggs then wash up on shore to awaiting parents (basically any two Vykusi will do).  They then take them to a special tree with gaps in the roots and place them there and nest them.  The eggs will hatch in around 85 days.

The Tree
An extremely bad drawing of the special tree, the line in the drawing is where the ground starts.  The gaps would normally be larger but I have terrible drawing skills.

Sounds good to me! Plus it is believable and adds an interesting dynamic in that their parents may not be their actual parents. Maybe you could tie in some lore with children who get taken in by their actual parents or something? I dunno, just throwing stuff out there.

You're on the right track though, good stuff!

I also have an opposing states idea that surround the two main gods, Om and Wi.  Servants of Om are good and scientific whilst the Agents of Wi are superstitious and oppressive.  Something I will have to work into there history, should be interesting.  Kinda makes me think of another creature I can not think of right now.

Already you're making a history for them?!

That was fast, and so far seems to be shaping up quite nicely :)
The realism is really good with the reproduction too.

Nice job so far, can't wait to see more.

Writing
This is basically how a Vykusi writes.  Their language is completely tonal, so they have no real "words".  Instead the represent with dots of varying height, with around twenty five tones total.  A dot in the middle means to hold a tone for one "beat" longer.  One dot up means to go one tone up and two dots mean two tones up and vise-versa.  They always start with the same tone, the one in the middle of their range of tones..  The slash means it's the end of the sentence.

Any questions or things I should improve or address?

Interesting word representation, though I can't help thinking they would be more realistic as glyphs, perhaps with lines "joining the dots", as it were, and eliminate the actual dots themselves. Not only would it be far far easier and faster to write, it would potentially save space.

EDIT: If you did that, I can see Vykusi books looking like they were written by a seismometer. ;D

I actually thought of the lines thing, but it really didn't want to work because they would have limited their amount of tones to five or require twenty five dots.  But thanks for the comments.

I added more info on the planet and communication and fixed some things so it wouldn't be inconsistent when I do the history.

Update: Removed most of the lines on the pictures except planet picture.

Update 2: Fixed planet

Update 3: Added picture of tree mentioned in text on reproduction.

One thing,  the front two arms only have two claws and are claws, not Nauzean hands.
But that is still beastly,  thanks potetoe.

No I am not complaining, My drawing did make it look like there was three so I understand.

Edit:  I also like this pic because it clearly demonstrates that a Vykusi has 360o vision.

You probably think I'm nit-picking too much but could you make it a dark orange, the claw feet color but slightly lighter?  Again, my drawing skills make it appear the color you picked.  Of course you did pick up on every other detail,  it took everyone I showed my pic too to figure out it's a side view.

Edit:

No problem at all! Its your picture, it should look how you want it to.

Is this better? I have to admit I'm a little confused on how the claws should look, so feel free to correct me.

Worship

The Vykusi worship their gods by building these Katus, or mandalas if you will.  They first go to the Special Tree and get four leaves from it.  They then travel to the swampy forests (dark green on planet map) and gather two vines with a sticky sap inside.  They join the two together to make a circle and place the four leaves around it.  Then they make the trip to the ocean to gather sea water.  They dig a small hollow inside the vine circle and fill it with water.  They then go to the mountains and volcanoes to gather ash and dirt.  They then build a cone from this mixture and place it in the middle, where it will suck up the water and fall apart.  They feel this is destroying evil because they view the volcano god Wi as pure evil.  Finally they plant the leave in the wet soil, where they will grow into a new Special Tree.   Each thing represents a god or goddess and their attributes.  The water is Om, the destroyer of evil; the leaves are Ro, who despite being a secondary god gave birth to the universe; the vines are Ko, who holds it all in ;and the mound is Wi, made to be destroyed.  These are made outside of the home and gathering everything usually takes a couple of Earth weeks. Also they go alone and only need to make one in a lifetime,  though more pious Vykusi might make two or three.

I should have an altar for Wi worshipers up by next week.
Any comments?  Questions?  Anything I can tweak? Don't forget to vote, it tells me what I should do next (I had this idea for a while)

I like the symbolic death of Wi in their Katus, and also the personal pilgrimages involved in making them. It's all very simple and effective.

Do they have like temples and stuff, or do these act as places of worship too?

The Special Tree that grows from their Katu is marked with their name and they go there to worship when they've encountered hard times.  Also they try to get the leaves from the Special Tree they were raised at.

A crappily draw Vykusi chair for vehicles.  A non vehicle chair would not have the safety bars and handles.
Suggestions on how to fix it would be helpful, as are comments and questions.

Computers

Pretty self explanatory.
No keyboards on Vykusi computers.  A microphone for writing.  Because why have a full keyboard for 5 letters? They carry them around and are multi-functional.

Good drawing Oshaberi.  Also don't forget to vote people, it gives me some sense of direction.

Flag

(Art by Martyk)

The flag of The SoO (Servants of Om).  Flown almost everywhere that a Vykusi wishes to proclaim their faith in Om, in addition to building a Katu.

Evolution coming soon!

Spacecraft

(this is a top down view with the light source in front)

This is the typical Vykusian ship design.  The front two points compress the space in front of it and the back two expand it.
This allows it to accelerate to beyond light speed.  One pint at a time can be used as well to turn the ship.
However, the ships as of now can only "jump" twice, one to where they are going and one back, so careful calculations are needed.
The central to floor is the bridge of the ship.  Along the sides are various engineering sections.
Further in are crew quarters, then family quarters, and finally guest quarters.
The windows are actually panels on the outside that record light and send it inside, this way absolute darkness is more easily obtainable.

Weapons

Primitive Weapons
Wooden Spear

A basic spear.  The Vykusi fear of Wi lead them to fear stones and metal-working.  Very effective if aimed at an eye.

Spiked War-logs

As their religion developed, the Vykusi lost their fear of stones and metals.  Two flexible branches, wound around one another and held in place with vines and stones pounded into them.  The added weight of the extra log makes the force of the swing greater.  The gaps allow it to easily be held.

Vykusi Bow

Due to their body structure, the human way of drawing a bow is ineffective.  Instead, they hold the wooden part with their claws and the string and quiver with their back hands.

Two-Handed Dagger

My personal favorite, this is held with both hands.  Often engraved with a leaf on one side and a water drop on the other (not pictured).
Held with the point down, a swift downward thrust can crack open their skull/rib.

Iron Dagger

The most noticeable difference in the handle.  The round peg is held by the claws and the hand protected by the casing.  No religious symbols.

Modern Weapons
Atom Breaker
Use of anti-muons nullifies the strong nuclear force, the atoms then blow themselves apart.  Special mechanisms withing the barrel of an Atom Breaker turret produce a concentrated shot of anti-muons.  Upon hitting their target their are then released.  The energized atoms produce a blinding flash of light and then hydrogen plasma is produced from the blown apart atoms, which then instantly cools down to a gaseous state.  This is most effective against planet bound targets, fired from a ship, though personal ones exist.

Heater Ray
A simple high intensity infrared beam that can melt a hull or increase the internal temperature.  Not useful at all for planet based targets.

Energy Budget
While the domain of the evil god, Wi, the Vykusi saw the potential in energy that volcanoes produce.  At first, they used the abundant oil and coal that comes from having a planet with plenty of swamps.  Oil slicks then led to a ban because they were fearful of that it would interfere with their reproduction, plus the oceans were sacred to them.  They then began to research into Geothermal Energy.  This proved effective because there was at least one major volcano per continent.  By the time they made first contact with another species, Geothermal Energy almost entirely replaced all other forms of energy.  Their ships are also powered by this, though it is proving ineffective, so they are beginning to research into fusion power.

Excuse me while I brainstorm some more history, the energy budget and weapon bios is going to be my "starting point", so to speak.

The name "War-log" was coined on the fly while I was posting the information.  They were originally going to be called "Spike hammers" but that wasn't as creative of a name.  Our houses scanner is connected to my father's PC so I was not able to color and post that picture.

An extra note about the Atom Breaker: Whilst it seemed I used it willy-nilly in the Iron Fist RP, they are barely used, if at all.  I haven't addressed killing in Vykusi religion just yet.

Sorry for double post, but Flisch has stated that if we wish, we can move our creature from NG to RG, as such, I am doing so!

The Move

As the first scout ship to leave the Xwi system activated its engines, the space in the system underwent a strange type of temporal shift.  Some sort of inconsistency formed where the ship was, engulfing it, Vyku, Xoki, Moni, Ryki, and the sun Xwi.  All of a sudden, the entire system was zipping through space, maybe even multiple dimensions.  The ship was acting as a tether, so they attempted to stop.  When they did, the system stopped in an ancient galaxy, and the ship returned to where it had started, making them the last Vykusi in that galaxy.  When they got to the old galaxy, they spent months figuring out what had happened.  As it turned out, a quantum singularity had exploded near the ship just as it activated its space benders.  To prevent this from happening again, all future ships were to do a quick scan before hand.  They also in that time developed fusion power, meaning that geothermal energy was not needed anymore for ships.

Agents of Wi
Forces of Chaos

The Agents of Wi, for all purposes, are the antithesis of the Servants of Om.  They have fought against each other since antiquity, with one side winning out in the end.  The Servants of Om won, after thousands of years of struggle.  However, they recently managed to resurface.  This was caused by the chaos of the move from the Before to the Now.  When the first diplomatic ship was going to be sent out into the stars, a small quantum fluctuation near the ship got magnified by its engines, and it swallowed the system whole, dragging them into the Now Galaxy.  Once the ship stopped its engines, the system stopped moving, but for some unexplained reason, the ship did not come with them.  Most assume that somehow they returned to the Before Galaxy, and more than likely committed suicide because they thought they destroyed the Xwi system in its entirety.  This was not true, however, as the system was not destroyed, but it was damaged.  The force of the journey, coupled with the fact the surrounding stars were different, caused huge gravity and magnetic shifts which disrupted power systems on Vyku.  A sort of self-imposed chaos began, crime was going through the roof.  The Agents of Wi who were underground saw their chance to show themselves.  People began to disappear while on their Katu pilgrimages, enough so that people stopped going on them.  Temples were getting burned down in remote regions, people were dying.  As the chaos spread, people started to see the way the wind was blowing.  Some turned against their children, murdering them, sometimes as soon as the eggs washed up on the beaches.  Sometimes people would take lots of eggs of secluded beaches, and raise them to serve Wi.  The AoW began to move into more populated areas, killing anyone that opposed them.  They became feared, and soon people were joining up into the space agency to escape them.  Fortunately, the rigorous training and background check meant that the AoW could not get in, so space exploration went on unabated.  And then, it all went to hell, the deep, dark, burny type hell.  The AoW stormed the capital, and set righteous fire to everything.  Many people are dying, and their antics continue to this day.

It never happened.  At least, the NC exodus of the AoW, they are still causing trouble for the SoO.  These are my favorite of my three creatures, and I would really like to RP with them again sometime.
