We should really start one before we get all confused. :P

So, shall it be 2d or 3d? We could make two maps if it is 3d. One for x,y and another for x,z.

If we can find a practical and easy to read way of making it 3D, I'd agree to it. Otherwise, 2D is fine.

3d is too hard. Plus we can just assume since the galaxy can be veiwed from a top-down perspective, that territory will be all things above or below their general area. Instead of it being beyond-complicated 3d. Or you could just have layers of Bottom Middle Top.

Or you could do a 2D map, then colour coding the stars depending their distance above and below the galactic plane. Darker colours would be the lowest under it, while lighter colours are above it.

I like this idea, although for the sake of organization, i think the number of colors should be limited to either 3 or 5. Any more than that and it gets crazy.

2D FTW!

We wouldn't be able to tell what's what. That wouldn't work. If stuff overlaps, it would be incredibly hard to tell what's what. My 3 layer plan is better.

How about a 5 layer model? Quite similar to Bumpy's suggestion but with two more layers.

The 3rd central layer will be the base layer. The 2nd and 4th will be the two layers that sandwich the 3rd layer. The 1st and 5th will then sandwich all the other layers, making them the upper and lower "outskirts" of the galaxy.

So, what size of map would be used?

Remember, I only have a free PB account. If its too big, I might not be able to host it.

Like your idea Yuu, I think it should be big, but not TO big. maybe around 1000 x 1000. We don't need bigger than that, we aren't that many, and bigger is just a waste since most space would remain empty and take up bandwith.

Also, i think that the area that the 'Genesis' RP occurred would be a good point to start everything.

I also think that the size of each race should be limited at first.

I think each race should have just one system (the homesystem...or maybe a new one, when the old one was blown up) and the rest of the systems are considered to be multicultural places like Beyon.
There is, of course, a difference between having a laugh with someone, and having a laugh at their expense

I dunno, Klameritus colonies are usualy underground, and suck up all resourses on the planet. Seriously, these guys breed like theres no tommorow, it's not logical to have all of the Klameritus stuffed into on system. Besides, I doubt any member of any race would volentarly spend their lives in virtual exile with bugs which could just as easily mistaken you for food.

However, I guess this is just the early stage, so most races, even the Klameritus, would just be starting to colonise their own systems.

Rezaforming also has a nasty habit of making a planet unusable by other races.

Perhaps you underestimate the size of a galaxy. In the Milky Way there are an estimated 200 to 400 billion stars. Even at a million NG races, that's 200,000 to 400,000 stars a piece. :P

Basically, on this map, only the home star would be seen, because all the other stars would basically right on top of it due to scale. Each NG member could then make their own map of their territory zoomed in, since it would be too small to see at galactic scale.

I think we should just show the home system, places of significance, and leave out territorial borders altogether. Borders in space are too hard to uphold anyway.
