What do you think Spore will 'teach' YOU?
« on: June 08, 2008, 06:17:41 am »
In the 'Science Behind Spore' video Will says "when you walk away from the game, we want people to think about the World they live in a little bit differently as a result of having played the game."

As someone who is making a late career change and going back to school for Biology, hearing Will say this made me think, 'will Spore cause me to think about the World differently?'

I can't say if it would be because of Spore or because of my studies, but I am already starting to look at Life in new ways. I would like to believe that Spore will be an ambassador of sorts for the world of Science, causing people to have a newfound respect for the Life around them.

I'm curious how others may perceive Spore. Is it an educational tool, a life simulator or just a game? What do YOU think it might teach you about the World you live in?

That I can make something in 3D that isn't a box ;)
Really, my grasp at making things in 3D is lacking at best.

That's a sample of what I've made in 3D using Gmax for Trainz
It's boxy as all get out, doesn't look anything like the real one at all.
( Real as in the miniature they used for Supertrain back in the day. )
However it's as good as I'm able to do with the tools and know how I have.

In other words I hope Spore will unleash my creativity as far as 3D goes.

I'm not convinced that Spore is going to directly teach me anything, however because of Spore I've learned plenty.  Mostly reading posts by people like Hydromancerx here in this forum.

I am already well informed about most of what Spore is wanting to teach.  But because of Spore I found SpaceOddity's blog, and as such learned a whole bunch of stuff!  Thanks!

Woulfe those aren't bad, i can only encourage you to keep practicing with 3D outside Spore also.
I'm sure you will make awesome things with the creators in Spore.

Artists are their own worst critics yanno....

What I mean is in things like Gmax I can't make anything organic, cars, trucks, trains, spaceships, no problem, living creatures, fergetaboutit.

Spore will hopefully break me out of that problem.

I wonder what a game could teach me. I didn't learn a lot from the Sims 2 for instance, besides the fact that you need green juice to live forever. A lot of games are just meant for entertainment. They lighten up my day and are used to have fun, I don't have a lot of learning games. I mean, think about it. What was the last game you played that taught you something? I don't recall any off the bat.

Spore has already taught me quite a bit.  It's given me an interest in evolution, origins of life, the many eras of Earth, space travel, all sorts of stuff.  I addition, it's what got me on forums, introduced me to RPs, story writing, drawing, all sorts of stuff.
