Decompose plastic in three months?
« on: May 23, 2008, 06:16:49 pm »

My question is that if such an abundant food source is available, why haven't these two organisms already multiplied exponentially? Whats preventing them from becoming plentiful enough to naturally decrease the rate of decomposure (er, thats not a word, but you get the idea) of plastics?

Thoughts?

It's a new means of recycling. If you could bioengineer those microbes to produce something useful when they decompose plastic, then this may become a commercially viable way of recycling plastic.

Eat plastic and make petrol. I'm sure it would only take forever to make it work.

Forever and a day. It'd still be awesome, though.

They can make bacteria produce insulin. Not really the same thing, but all I'm saying is microbiologists are good these days.  8)

And viruses that eat bacteria. Look up bacteriophages.

Not eat, so much as turn into them from the inside and then explode.

Well, they use the bacteria's metabolism and DNA and body to recreate and feed themselves as viruses don't have a metabolism or reproduction method on their own.
